PLANET FITNESS POLICIES

Providing guidance and insight into how you can enjoy our Judgement Free Zone®.

Welcome to Planet Fitness! Whether you’re a first-time gym user or a longtime member, we’re here to provide a workout environment in which anyone - and everyone - can be comfortable. We’ve created this policy guide to provide guidance and insight into how you can enjoy our Judgement Free Zone® and make the most of your membership.

Any questions related to the contents of this policy guide or its interpretation should be directed to your club manager or supervisor. Planet Fitness reserves the right to modify any policy or club rule at any time and in its sole discretion, with or without prior notice. But most importantly we want you to know you belong and our friendly team members are here to help when you need it.

Planet Fitness does not tolerate discrimination or harassment of any person on its premises on the basis of race, national origin, ancestry, color, creed, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, age, disability, or any other basis protected by law. All members will have access to restroom and locker room facilities that correspond to their self-reported gender identity to the extent permitted by applicable law.

Who We Are:

Planet Fitness is more than your neighborhood fitness center – we are the Judgement Free Zone®. At Planet Fitness, we celebrate and champion diversity and provide an environment where everyone feels accepted, respected and like they belong. Planet Fitness prohibits discrimination and harassment that is based on gender identity or gender expression in the workplace and in our clubs. The following is our corporate policy regarding the accommodation of our members and team members in terms of their gender identity.

Terminology:

Gender Identity: a person’s sense of self as male, female, or non-binary. This may or may not be related to the person’s sex assigned at birth.

• Transgender: an umbrella term that refers to any person whose gender identity as male or female is different than the gender identity typically associated with the person’s assigned sex at birth.

• Non-binary: an umbrella term that encompasses people who do not identify exclusively as a man or a woman. This would include identities such as agender, bigender, genderqueer or gender-fluid.

Gender Expression: external appearance of one's gender identity, usually expressed through behavior, clothing, haircut, voice, or other physical attribute which may or may not conform to socially defined behaviors and characteristics typically associated with being either masculine or feminine.

Gender Pronouns: the terms people choose to refer to themselves that reflect their gender identity. These might be he/him, she/her or gender-neutral pronouns such as they/them. Knowing and using a person's correct pronouns fosters inclusion, makes people feel respected and valued, and affirms their gender identity – and doing so is important to our inclusive environment and is in line with our policies.

Policy Provisions:

• Planet Fitness does not tolerate verbal or physical harassment of any member or team member for any reason.

• If any member experiences harassment, it should be reported by the member to a Planet Fitness team member as soon as possible. The Planet Fitness team member must take immediate action to address the situation and to ensure the safety of the member.

• If a Planet Fitness team member harassed the member, it must be reported to the appropriate supervisor(s) immediately, and the Planet Fitness supervisor(s) must take immediate action to address the situation and to ensure the safety of the member. Issues not resolved to a member’s satisfaction should be directed to info@planetfitness.com.

• Team members who have experienced harassment by other team members or members should report harassment in accordance with their ownership group’s reporting guidelines, which may be found in your employee handbook or similar HR document.

• In the instance of harassment of a member or a team member, the allegations should be investigated, the situation assessed to determine necessary changes moving forward, and appropriate action should be taken.

2. Transgender and nonbinary persons applying for membership will not be turned away, referred to another fitness facility, or treated in a discriminatory fashion because of their gender identity. Transgender and nonbinary persons applying for employment will not be turned away or treated in a discriminatory fashion because of their gender identity. We have uniform standards for membership and employment regardless of gender identity and/or expression.

3. Members and team members will be treated according to their self-reported gender identity. If a serious concern or significant doubt about the bona fides of a person’s transgender or nonbinary status/identity arises and which the team member can articulate, the team member shall address their concerns with the member. If discussion with the member fails to resolve the serious concern or doubt, the club may ask for external evidence of the member’s asserted gender identity. If it is confirmed that a member is acting in bad faith and improperly asserts a gender identity, they may be asked to leave and their membership may be terminated.

4. Private information such as a person’s identification as transgender or nonbinary and any medical information must be treated as confidential.

5. Subject to Section Three above, all members and team members may use Planet Fitness locker room facilities and programs based on their self-reported gender identity; these facilities include bathrooms, showers, and all other facilities separated by sex. Wherever possible, Planet Fitness clubs should maintain private changing areas in each locker room for the comfort of all members and team members. Where applicable, gender-neutral bathrooms may also be made available as needed for the privacy and comfort of members and team members.

Use of a gender-neutral bathroom is voluntary.

6. Planet Fitness team members and members should address transgender and nonbinary members and other team members with preferred names, titles, pronouns, and other terms consistent with their self-reported gender identity. If a team member or member accidentally misgenders someone, please apologize. Ask the member or team member for their preferred pronouns and use those going forward.

7. The resolution of any conflict or question arising under this policy is at the sole discretion of Planet Fitness team members. Planet Fitness reserves the right to take appropriate action up to and including termination of a person’s membership or employment immediately for any violation of this policy or a club rule.

Planet Fitness does not tolerate verbal or physical harassment of any member or team member for any reason. Violations by members may result in cancellation of membership.

If any member experiences harassment:

  • The incident of harassment shall be reported to a Planet Fitness team member or manager as soon as possible

  • Issues that are not resolved in a manner satisfactory to a member may also be directed to info@planetfitness.com

All clubs must comply with and operate within the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act and other accessibility laws and regulations.

Service Animals:

State and federal laws and regulations mandate that all service animals are permitted in the club and on the gym floor.

  • The service animal must be allowed access to all public areas

  • If it is not obvious that the animal is a service animal, the staff may ask (1) is the service animal required because of a disability and/or (2) what work or task has the service animal been trained to perform?

  • The handler is responsible for caring for and supervising the service animal, which includes toileting, feeding, grooming, veterinary care, and ensuring the animal is under control

Personal Aides:

If the member requires assistance, personal aides are allowed to be with the member in the club.

In general, a personal aide may assist – but may not work out with the member.  However, the personal aide may work out:

  • As a PF Black Card® member guest, if the member holds a PF Black Card®

  • If the aide is a Planet Fitness member in good standing

  • As a reasonable accommodation under the ADA if the member requires it

There are no additional fees for having a personal aide in the club. The personal aide must be treated as other PF Black Card® guests and sign in at the front desk electronically or sign the guest register or the PF Black Card® guest sign-in sheet upon each visit.

9. REPORTING
If you become aware of an ethics issue in your organization, please contact your Franchise Business Coach.

Respect and courtesy are essential components of a comfortable, Judgement Free Zone®. Please respect the personal space of others, keep the equipment in its designated area, and if you’re resting between sets, allow other members to use the equipment.  After you’ve finished your workout, we ask that members please be courteous and wipe down the equipment, and return any weights or other accessories to the designated storage areas.

If you have any questions, ask any team member for guidance. We also offer free fitness training with a certified fitness trainer. They can answer questions and work with you to create a fitness program to help you achieve your fitness goals.

The Judgement Free® policy is put into place in order to help maintain a Judgement Free® environment within the club at all times.

By Planet Fitness® definition, a Lunk® is one who exhibits behaviors that work against our Judgement Free® atmosphere. Lunk-like actions are often intimidating to most members who just want to get in a good workout. While we welcome everyone, we are built on the premise of no intimidation.

Lunk-like actions include behaviors such as:

Grunting - Excessively loud displays of effort including grunting, yelling, groaning

Dropping weights - Intentionally dropping weights to the ground after the last rep of a set

Showcasing - Flexing, strutting, or making an effort to attract attention

Judging - Mocking, criticizing, or making negative comments related to another person's appearance, experience, ability, knowledge of equipment, etc.

The Lunk Alarm® is a siren used to enforce our Judgment Free® policy. The Lunk Alarm® helps maintain a Judgement Free® atmosphere by stopping a Lunk® in his/her tracks.

Members play a role in supporting both the Judgement Free® atmosphere and safety on the club floor. Athletic footwear and appropriate clothing must be worn at all times.

  • Planet Fitness strives to provide a safe and comfortable environment for all members. As such, clothing and tattoos with offensive messages and clothing that may present health or safety hazards or damage club equipment, is not allowed. For example,

    • Open-toed shoes or sandals pose a safety hazard for members working out;

    • Jeans or pants with prominent grommets may damage equipment; and

    • Clothing/tattoos with hateful, lewd or offensive messaging undermines our welcoming environment

  • Members may exercise in a wide variety of attire. Crop tops, sports bras, bralettes, short shorts, long pants, collared shirts are all welcome!

  • Water bottles/jugs of all sizes (including gallon sizes) are allowed, as long as they have a screw-on top. Press-on tops such as those found on certain gallon jugs are not allowed, as these present a spill hazard.

  • All personal belongings must be kept in lockers Bags and any clothing not in use are not allowed on the club floor. Bags and clothing on the club floor present potential safety hazards and are targets for theft

Club use is restricted to:

  • Members

  • PF Black Card® guests

  • Non-members who pay a day fee

  • Non-members bearing official day pass

  • Non-members participating in a limited time promotion (ex: Pizza/Bagel day, Tax Day, etc.)

  • Non-Black Card® members who pay a franchise fee

Non-members of all ages, other than PF Black Card® guests, are not allowed to wait for members in the club.

The day fee is the fee a non-member/non PF Black Card® guest pays for use of the gym for one day. The day fee allows potential members to try the facility before committing to a membership. The full amount of the day fee applies towards membership fees if the visitor joins that location within 30 days of the visit (valid receipt required).

Day fee guests must be at least 18 years old with a valid driver’s license or photo ID. Individuals under 18 may not purchase a day pass even if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

PF Black Card® members must be granted reciprocal use of all Amenities in all Planet Fitness locations.

  • If a PF Black Card® member visits a location other than the home club more than 10 times in a calendar month, a $5 per visit franchise fee may apply

  • $10 and $15 Non-Reciprocal members (NR) may use other Planet Fitness locations for a $5 franchise fee

  • Proof of membership, such as the Club Pass or a verifiable member number, must be shown upon entry

Members from a presale location should be treated as any other Planet Fitness member and have access to reciprocal use consistent with the stated policy, even if the home club they joined is not yet open.

Members of clubs in presale will be expected to comply with all rules of reciprocal use. Presale club members will have a Club Pass and copy of the membership agreement as verification of membership.

PF Black Card® members are welcome to bring one guest with them each time they visit. Guests must be 18 years or older. If a guest is between the ages of 13 to 17, they are welcome to visit if accompanied by a parent or guardian. Please note that PF Black Card® guests may not have access to PF Black Card® perks

Inviting a PF Black Card® guest is a breeze with the PF Mobile App. By sending an invite to your workout buddy through the PF App, they will be prompted to complete a short online registration and then be granted access to a digital Club Pass, making check-in at the club easy, touchless and quick!

The in-club use of mobile devices can impact the safety, privacy and comfort of our members. In order to protect our Judgement Free Zone® and ensure the best possible member experience, we limit in-club use of mobile devices in the following ways:

  1. Planet Fitness strictly prohibits the use of mobile devices to take photographs or videos or to make voice or video calls in the locker rooms but also in our black card spa area including individual rooms such as tanning rooms.

  2. Headphones or earbuds are required while listening to any audio on a mobile device.

  3. Use of mobile devices to make voice or video calls is permitted in the lobby area only.

  4. Members are prohibited from using their mobile devices anywhere in the club to view content that may be viewed as offensive or inappropriate.

  5. Members may use their mobile devices on the gym floor in order to photograph or take video of themselves in very limited circumstances and this privilege may be revoked at any time and for any reason at the sole discretion of Planet Fitness® team members.  Use of a mobile device on the gym floor may be acceptable under the following conditions:

    1. No member may use a mobile device to take photographs or videos if doing so presents a risk of injury to themselves or others (for example, mobile devices should not be used to take photographs or video by anyone who is simultaneously using exercise equipment);

    2. Out of respect for the privacy and comfort of our members, photographs or video should never include anyone who has not given their prior permission to appear in such images;

    3. Images containing Planet Fitness® intellectual property are subject to all applicable copyright and trademark protections, including, but not limited to, federal and state laws and regulations, and we may prohibit any public-facing use thereof; and

    4. No photographs or video may be used for commercial purposes whatsoever.

  6. The resolution of any conflict or question arising under this policy is at the sole discretion of Planet Fitness® team members.

Because the safety, privacy and comfort of our members is paramount, enforcement of this mobile device use policy is a serious matter.  Any report of a violation of this policy, whether from a Planet Fitness® team member or a club member, should be resolved promptly and professionally, with priority given to the privacy and comfort of all members.

Planet Fitness® reserves the right to revoke any and all mobile device use privileges under this policy and, if deemed warranted, to terminate a person’s membership immediately for any violation of this policy or other club rule.

While we hate to see you cancel your membership, our cancellation process may vary club to club, so the best first step is to contact your home location to confirm the cancellation policy. For most locations, you can visit your home club in person to cancel your membership or send written notification via mail to your home club requesting to cancel. Some members may also be eligible to cancel their membership online based on their membership type and location of their home club. If you have additional questions, please contact your home club or our Member Services department.

Please note, to stop the billing of your monthly membership on the 17th, the club must receive written notice delivered by the 10th in person or through mail, as it may take up to 7 business days for billing changes to take effect. To stop the billing of the annual fee, cancellation must be completed by the 25th of the month prior to the annual fee date. Lastly, if your membership has a minimum term and is canceled prior to end of contract term, a $58 buyout fee is required.

A member may transfer from one home club to another, without prejudice or loss of current membership benefits, after three months of membership.

  • Membership must be at least three months old

  • Membership must be in good standing (no arrears)

  • Prepay memberships are non-transferrable

  • Monthly memberships are non-transferrable from one individual to another

  • The transfer must occur between clubs in the same country

  • A transfer fee may apply

Your wellness is important to us. Membership accounts may be frozen or put on a temporary hold, if you cannot use the club because of a temporary medical condition. A team member at your club will be able to assist you by putting your membership on hold for a determined length of time. Note that if your Annual Fee is scheduled within the freeze timeframe, it may be temporarily waived or rescheduled, at your club’s discretion. If rescheduled, the Annual Fee payment will fall on the first of the month following your resumed monthly membership payment.

If your membership has a commitment end date, the length of your membership will be extended by the length of the membership freeze. If your membership is prepaid, the expiration date of your membership will be extended by the length of the freeze.

Planet Fitness does not set time limits on any piece of cardio, functional, or strength training equipment, with the exception of equipment located in the 30-Minute Express Circuit.

Amenities may have usage restrictions such as age, time, and frequency of use. Restrictions may be imposed by law, or by the need to ensure all members are given the opportunity to use the Amenities during their visit.

Lockers are provided for member use while at the club, free of charge, for convenience.

  • Lockers are available to all members, and are used at member’s own risk

  • Locks are recommended, and members must use their own locks unless your club offers lockers with keyless locks build in

  • Lockers are for member use while at the club only - members may not leave the club with personal items left in a locker

There may be times when a lock must be cut from a locker. Examples of this include, but are not limited to:

  • A member has placed a lock on a locker that was already in use

  • A member failed to observe the policy that lockers can only be used while at the club, and the items have been in the locker for more than 24 hours

Only authorized personnel are allowed to cut locks. All items will be removed from the locker and stored at the front desk until they can be returned to their rightful owner.

All members, including transgender members, may use Planet Fitness® locker room facilities, bathrooms, showers, and all other facilities/programs separated by sex based on their self-reported gender identity.

  • We ask that members respect the privacy and comfort of other members by practicing modesty in the locker rooms and remaining covered as much as possible

  • Wherever possible, Planet Fitness® clubs will maintain private changing areas in each locker room for the comfort of all members

Tanning is a highly regulated service that is offered as an amenity only to Planet Fitness members with valid PF Black Card® memberships. Regulations vary by state and even within local jurisdictions.

Members must agree to terms and conditions of use in accordance with all Planet Fitness policies and all applicable regulations that govern tanning, including, but not limited to:

    • Non-members (including guests of PF Black Card® members) and members under the age of 18 are not permitted to tan

  • Frequency of use

    • Members can tan only as often as allowed by applicable law, but not more than once every 24 hours

  • Use of products and protective wear, including approved eye protection

  • Length of tanning exposure
