Division of Fish & Wildlife staff collect reports as time permits. Only those water bodies with a current report are included.

WaterbodyReportDate
JC Murphey (Willow Slough)The lake has refilled to about 30 inches below average pool. This will hopefully allow vegetation to continue to rebound especially in the back of the lake following the renovation. Fish were stocked into the lake in the fall of 2023 with more stocking occurring in 2024. Fish salvaged from the lake before draining have been stocked back into the lake, with some catchable size bluegill, crappie, and largemouth bass. There will be limited angling opportunities for harvestable sized fish in 2024 except for the larger spawning sized fish from the salvage units. Please release these larger fish as they are the spawners for future. More information can be found in the link below. 3/22/2024
Lake Michigan (boat)The coho bite continues to be pretty good, but has been more hit or miss lately, with swings in weather and warming surface temps. With temps in the low 50s, the nearshore bite may wrap up pretty soon, and silver fish begin sliding out to 60-120 feet rather than being near the beach. Spoons on riggers, long lines, and divers have taken good numbers of fish, along with mini flies and dodgers. Some kings and steelhead are in the mix as well, especially offshore.  The perch bite has started to fall off significantly as they start spawning. The smallmouth bite has been pretty good near rip rap and marinas, and some are starting to bed in protected areas. 5/9/2024
Lake Michigan (shore)A few early skamania have been caught at Portage and Michigan City. A few alewife are in the harbors. Catfish and drum are starting to bite, and bass are starting to bed in protected areas. Be advised that due to heavy construction at the Port of Indiana, the shore fishing site there will be closed through summer 2024.5/9/2024
Lake Michigan Tributaries (Trail Creek, Little Calumet River, Salt Creek)A few early skamania are showing up, but water is high and a bit muddy. Anglers willing to cover water and put in some time can get rewarded right now with a few skamania, because they are aggressive with cool water temps and low angler pressure. For links to stream flow, see the links below the report tables5/9/2024
St. Joseph River (below Twin Branch Dam)The spring steelhead run is mostly over. Now is the transition time to early summer fishing… bass are nearing spawn, walleyes are wrapped up with their spawn. Use jerkbaits, jigs, and cranks for bass and walleye.  Catfish are feeding heavily as well, on live bait. Monitor the river temp and flow at the closest USGS gauge in Niles, MI using the links below the report table5/2/2024
