A Cowboy for Christmas Kindle Edition
A very loud pounding on the door startled everyone then.
“Well, who on earth could that be at this hour? And in this weather?” Lottie asked. “I swear, that knockin’ nearly startled me right out of my skin!”
“Me too, Mama,” Savannah agreed. In fact, her heart was still racing.
“We aren’t expectin’ anyone, are we, Lottie?” Bill asked.
“No. Not at all,” Lottie said.
Savannah watched as Bill quickly strode toward the door. He grabbed the rifle he’d set next to it when he’d entered earlier and then called, “Hello? Who’s that?”
A deep, masculine voice answered from the other side of the door. “Mr. Dickerson? It’s me, Trenner Barnett. Do you remember me, sir?”
“Trenner Barnett?” Bill mumbled, frowning as he immediately pulled the bolt on the door and opened it.
A gust of merciless wind and blowing snow whooshed into the house in the wake of the man who stepped in....

However, this little book 99 page novella was way too simplistic for my tastes. I found very little within the pages of this book that gave my soul a true lift. It's a western which is set around Christmas time with the Dickersons - a blended family. It seems Dad brought two daughters to the marriage and Mama brought a son and a daughter. Savannah, Mom's daughter, feels kinda out of place within the family even though everyone is very supportive. When her little brother, Everett, prays for a cowboy for Savannah's Christmas, the handsome Trenner Barnett walks through the door after being wounded by cattle rustlers.
While Trenner recuperates at the Dickersons, Everett contrives to get Savannah and Trenner together. Everett is a sweetheart of a boy and he actually is probably my favorite character in the book. I will confess that eventually the kissing between Trenner and Savannah is hot. But, that's about the most I can say about the book. I thought about closing it at the half way mark and setting it aside. But, I did finish it mostly because I do respect this author's talent which has been proven throughout many of her other books.
My favorite among all her books is Weathered Too Young . I've read it several times; however, if you can't handle some quaint cowboy talk, you probably wouldn't enjoy any of her western themed books. Words like "ya" instead of "you" are peppered throughout her western books and apparently that sets some readers off.
Last, I am of the opinion that the pricing on McClure's novellas is a bit over the top. I actually sent her an email to let her know my thoughts about pricing when Marcia Lynn McClure first came out at a whopping $7.95 for a 96 page book. She responded in a very straightforward manner and compared the purchase of an e-book that can be kept forever versus the price of a McDonald's lunch. Well, she did have a point, but I still didn't buy. That book is now available at a much lower price, yet IMO still a bit pricey for a 96 page book. But, I must confess, I would have paid twice that amount for a book like "Weathered Too Young." So... to each his own when it comes to our own preferences and our pocketbooks.
Thank you for always writing great books that you can't put down.
