Slayer is a members-only support skill in which players receive assignments from Slayer Masters to kill monsters which often require a specific method to effectively slay. Slayer was introduced on 26 January 2005. Players get a Slayer task from one of eleven Slayer Masters, and players gain Slayer experience for killing monsters that they are assigned. Slayer experience is granted in addition to regular combat experience. The current minimum requirement to be ranked (at approximately rank 825,090) on the HiScores for Slayer is level 15. As of 24 April 2024, there are 232,407 current members that have achieved level 99 in Slayer. There are 73,033 current members that have achieved level 120 in Slayer.

At RuneFest 2016, it was announced that Slayer's level cap would be raised to 120 in June 2017 alongside the release of Menaphos. Players had a 3 month grace period after release to obtain 120 before any completionist cape holders would lose their capes. Virtual levels above 99 in the skill were converted to the actual level on release.

Slayer was founded by the first order of Slayer masters formed by Amascut after Tumeken's death during the second age. The earliest monster slayers were Catolax and Faiza.

When fighting against normal monsters, the player to "tag" the target first will receive full slayer and combat experience regardless of how much damage they dealt to it. When fighting against unique monsters or bosses, the tagging effect does not apply and players must deal the most damage to gain slayer experience.

Though Slayer initially provides very poor money at low levels, this changes as the player's Slayer level increases. As the player's Slayer level increases, they will be able to use better Slayer masters (who assign harder tasks) and battle stronger creatures, who often have lucrative drop tables, provide generous experience or both. Most monsters have unique drops (either to themselves or shared), with some of these unique drops only being obtainable on-task (e.g. ascension grips), or possessing an increased drop rate for the duration of the task (e.g. cinderbane gloves).

Introduction[edit | edit source]

A Slayer is someone who is assigned to slay, i.e. kill, specific monsters. These assignments are given out by one of the eleven Slayer Masters (Slayer master icon) that are located around Gielinor, and can include targets anywhere on Gielinor or its nearby planes. Players can receive tasks by visiting a Slayer Master, or by casting the Lunar Contact NPC spell. Assignments are usually relevant to the player's combat and Slayer level. Some monsters require the use of special equipment in order to finish them off, or to protect the player from their abilities. An interface can be enabled to count down the number of kills remaining in an assignment. Clicking the Slayer icon on that interface toggles an expanded view showing the name of the currently assigned monster, total Slayer points, and task streak.

Slayer Masters[edit | edit source]

Twelve Slayer masters are found in RuneScape; each master gives assignments oriented towards a general range of combat levels. Slayer Masters have now been given a right-click ‘Get-task’ option to speed things up a bit. You can also find out how many more kills you need with a right-click option on enchanted gems or a slayer ring, which are both obtainable from any Slayer Master (a ring of slaying can only be bought from a Slayer Master if you have completed the quest Smoking Kills). Kalphites are the only monster that can be given out by every Slayer master (except Mandrith). Non-members can get tasks from Turael and train Slayer up to level 5.

Slayer monsters[edit | edit source]

Some monsters can be substituted for another variety of their kind, kills of which will count towards the task. Examples include baby blue dragons for adult ones, or the King Black Dragon for black dragons. If the substitute is of a lower level than the assigned monster, the player will receive less Slayer and combat experience for the task. Monsters inside of a Player-owned house will not count towards a task, and will generate the message "Monsters inside a player-owned house do not count towards your slayer target."

A slayer assignment may be changed (cancel, block, extend, prefer) once per assignment with the use of slayer points, see next section.

Turael and Spria, the Slayer masters in Taverley, will offer to replace the player's Slayer task if they cannot complete it, they cannot assign the task themselves, and the assigned amount is greater than what they would normally give, in exchange for giving them a task of their own. However, this will reset the player's task completion count, which they will warn players of when attempting to replace the task.

Boss slayer[edit | edit source]

Certain bosses are members of a specific slayer assignment and can be killed to gain slayer experience while on such an assignment. While this prolongs the completion of these assignments killing these bosses on their respective assignment grants the player the benefit of the effects of the full slayer helmet and its upgraded variants, namely the accuracy and damage bonus that the helmet provides, this significantly increases the damage dealt to these bosses.

Slayer points[edit | edit source]

Players earn Slayer points (Slayer_points.png: RS3 Inventory image of Slayer_points) for completing tasks, with the amount depending on which Slayer Master assigned the task, and the number of tasks completed in a row. Upon completion of the Smoking Kills quest, Slayer point rewards are permanently doubled from completing tasks. Players only start earning slayer points after finishing four tasks in a row. Tasks assigned by Turael/Spria do not reward any Slayer points.

A slayer assignment may be changed once per assignment with the use of slayer points. Right-click on a slayer master to select Rewards, then select the Assignment tab:

  • Cancel task (30 pts);
  • Block task (100 pts), cancels that task until unblocked;
  • Extend task (30 pts);
  • Prefer task (100 pts), also extends task for that specific assignment.

A maximum of 8 assignment types can be blocked and preferred, one for every 50 quest points, up until 400. Blocking or cancelling an assignment does not reset the task streak.

Every 10th and 50th task, a special bonus amount of points is given to the player, these bonuses differ with each Slayer master. Duradel for example, tasks 1-4 earn no points, tasks 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, 70, 80 and 90 earns 75 points, task 50 and 100 earns 225 points and all other tasks earn 15 points. Whenever a task is done the player is notified on what number task it is. This can help players plan to what slayer master they prefer to go next, to maximise the number of Slayer points in the shortest amount of time.

Slayer equipment[edit | edit source]

All Slayer masters operate the shared Slayer equipment shop that sells various tools and weapons for use against certain monsters they assign. They may be required for protection, or to damage (or strike a killing blow) upon these monsters. All Slayer masters grant access to the same shop, including the same stock, and prices, with the exception of tutorial gear.

The most basic piece of Slayer equipment is the enchanted gem, which allows players to contact their Slayer Master to ask for tips, find out how many monsters are left on their assignment, or to create a social slayer group. A ring of slaying, purchased from Slayer Masters for 75 Slayer points or created using an enchanted gem and a gold bar (after learning how, for 300 Slayer points), has the same abilities as the enchanted gem, but can also teleport players to four Slayer locations. A ferocious ring, dropped by monsters in Kuradal's Dungeon, provides damage boosts in that dungeon, and can teleport the wearer to Kuradal or, if unlocked for 100 Slayer points, Morvran. A full slayer helmet or better can be fused with rings of slaying and ferocious rings, to give the helmet the teleport abilities of the rings and the ability to check the number of kills remaining on their task.

Social Slayer[edit | edit source]

Social Slayer, sometimes referred to as Co-op Slayer, allows two players to work on a Slayer assignment together. To do so, one player must invite the other to a co-op group using an enchanted gem, ring of slaying or an upgraded Slayer helmet. The other player must then accept the invitation using any of the aforementioned items. In order to form a group, both players must be on the same task or not currently have one assigned. Slayer masks can not be used to force slayer tasks whilst in a slayer group. The co-op group will be disbanded if one player logs out or disconnects. Players who have unlocked the ability to share their partner's protective equipment should still bring their own equipment in case the other player loses connection.

Each kill decreases the required kill count for both players as long as they are relatively close to each other. If one player strays over 30 tiles from their co-op partner, it will stop sharing their kills with their co-op partner's kill count counter on both ends. To avoid this, both players should make sure they are within sight of each other. Due to co-op Slayer assignments being shorter, the total number of Slayer points that the two players would have received had they completed the task on their own is halved. For example, a task assigned by Chaeldar would distribute 10 points to the two players (depending on participation) as opposed to the normal 10 points to each player for a total of 20. A player obtains Co-op Slayer points once their required kill count gets zero; the amount received depends on the Slayer master used. Players also get normal Slayer points, depending on how much of the task they completed. For example, if both players killed approximately half of the required monsters, then the Slayer points would be split evenly between them. If one player kills all monsters while the other does not contribute, then the first player will get all Slayer points and the second player will get none. Any kills performed by a player who has completed their task would still reduce their partner's required kill count as long as both players are still in the group.

When using the "Kills-left" option on an enchanted gem, ring of slaying or an upgraded Slayer helmet, the required kill count for both players is shown separately. In order to receive slayer (and combat) experience, a player must do more than 50% damage to a creature.

When getting a new task from a Slayer master, only the blocked tasks of the player requesting the task is considered. The block lists do not combine. Both players need not be in the same world in order for a duo task to be assigned. However, tasks can only be assigned by Slayer masters that both players meet the requirements for - a team that has a player with level 71 combat and one with level 126 combat cannot receive tasks from Kuradal. Attempting to do so does not assign a solo task to the one eligible player, you are told to go to a lower slayer master. If both players own the Slayer master cape, there is a chance they will be allowed to reroll their assignment a number of times.

Drops are not shared unless using LootShare or CoinShare. Each player gets experience for their own kills; combat and slayer experience are not shared with each other either. The aim of Social Slayer is simply to speed up the task and provide an opportunity to interact with other players.

Ironman and Hardcore Ironman players cannot do Social Slayer with anyone. Slayer Introspection and slayer challenges don't work with Social Slayer.

Slayer task extenders[edit | edit source]

Slayer Task Extenders are items or effects that while active will lengthen or shorten your current slayer task.

Slayer challenges[edit | edit source]

Players can get a unique challenge from each slayer master, which reward extra slayer experience and Slayer points.

Sunken Pyramid[edit | edit source]

Players with access to Menaphos can work towards being their own Slayer Master at the Sunken Pyramid through use of the Slayer Codex.

Forcing a Slayer task[edit | edit source]

Slayer masks are Slayer equipment that can be won from Treasure Hunter or as rewards from Shattered Worlds. They were released in several waves. The first sets allowed a player to force a slayer task of that creature daily, and the later every 3 days.

They provide several bonuses for players looking to train their Slayer skill, including bonus experience, extra damage, and double drops every 10th kill. The mask will also teleport the player twice a day to the relevant monster area/dungeon.

After a certain number of kills (depending on mask), the mask will become a helm. The helms retain the masks' teleports and ability to force a slayer task, but they do not provide bonus experience, extra damage, or double drops.

A Slayer VIP ticket is an item that allows a choice of one of two assignments when obtaining a new task. Tickets may either be bought from Cabbage Facepunch Bonanza, bought from the travelling merchant whenever he stocks it, obtained as a reward from Rush of Blood's reward mode, bought for 5 thaler, or as a reward from opening the Raptor's chest of slaying with a Raptor key. The tickets can be stored in the Currency pouch.

Players wearing a Slayer master cape have a 20% chance of being able to choose their assignment.

Useful items[edit | edit source]

Damage[edit | edit source]

  • A Black mask will boost Melee damage and accuracy by 12.5% while fighting monsters that have been assigned by a Slayer Master. They can be obtained by fighting Cave Horrors in a cave on Mos Le'Harmless, or by buying them from other players. When meleeing cave horrors, a Witchwood icon and light source is required. The masks have a number of charges, represented by a number following the item title, (e.g.; black mask(10), black mask(3), ranging from 1-10). When the player still has charges, they will sometimes have their opponent's Defence decreased at the cost of one charge. When Black masks have lost all their charges, they have no number. There is no known way to recharge them at this time. Black masks with no charges retain their Attack and Strength boosts. You can now remove charges from a Black mask with an update that came out 2 November 2010.
  • A Focus sight will boost Ranged damage and accuracy by 12.5% while fighting monsters that have been assigned by a Slayer Master. They can be obtained as drops from Desert strykewyrms, which require 77 Slayer to kill.
  • A Hexcrest will boost Magic damage and accuracy by 12.5% while fighting monsters that have been assigned by a Slayer Master. They can be obtained as drops from Jungle strykewyrms, which require 73 Slayer to kill. It should be noted that these monsters have the ability to poison players.
  • The Salve amulet is a reward from the Haunted Mine quest, which boosts damage and accuracy for all combat styles by 15% when fighting any undead monster, such as Aberrant spectres, Banshees, and Shades. The player can enchant it by defeating Tarn Razorlor and using the book obtained on the amulet, which raises the buffs to 20%. The amulet's effects will stack with the above Slayer headgear.
  • Dragon slayer gloves can be purchased for 200 Fist of Guthix tokens from Reggie (the owner of Fist of Guthix Rewards Shop), giving 15% more Slayer experience and a 10% Attack bonus when worn while slaying dragons as part of an assigned slayer task. These boosts stack with the black mask and Slayer helmet. They will crumble to dust after killing 1,000 assigned dragons while wearing the gloves.
  • The Slayer helmet gives the same advantages which a black mask gives but also acts as a multi task protection helmet. It is made using a black mask, earmuffs, nose peg, facemask and a spiny helmet on each other. The Slayer helmet gives the protection of all of these items against their specific monsters. This helmet requires you to buy the knowledge to make it for 400 slayer points as well as have 10 Defence and 55 Crafting. This helmet is very popular amongst high level slayers for its practicality and its ability to still give the black mask's bonuses in Melee damage and accuracy whilst fighting monsters you otherwise would need a different helmet for.
  • The full Slayer helmet can be made by adding a hexcrest and focus sight to a normal Slayer helmet. This makes maging and ranging tasks much easier.
  • The Slayer helmet can be upgraded several times for slayer points, up to a Corrupted slayer helmet, which grants additional damage and accuracy over the base helmet.
  • With the tier 3 Slayer Lodge, a slayer helmet can be mounted on the stand to turn it into a passive effect, allowing the use of other damage-boosting helmets while on task.

  • update 31 January 2005 (Update):
    • People have told us they don't like how in multicombat areas they could do most of the damage to a creature and then someone would deal the killing blow and be counted as the slayer of the creature.
    • We have changed this. Now both the person who dealt the killing blow and the person who did the most damage will be counted as the slayer for the purposes of their kill counts. (If you did both these things you will only count as having killed the creature once though.) The slayer xp will be split evenly between the two players.
    • Giants have been renamed to Hill Giants. This is to make it clear that when the slayer masters tell you to kill hill giants, they don't mean moss giants, fire giants or ice giants.
    • We have added more hill giants and hellhounds to cope with the increased demand for these creatures that has been created by the slayer skill. There are now more hellhounds in the Taverley dungeon and some south of the Wilderness axe hut. There are hill giants added to the north of the observatory and south-west of the gnome stronghold.
    • People may have noticed last week we also decreased the totals of bronze dragons and steel dragons being assigned to decrease crowding on those creatures.
  • update 26 January 2005 (Update):
    • Slayer skill added to game.
    • Today we have introduced a new skill for members called the Slayer skill!
    • The Slayer skill allows you to kill strange new creatures which would previously have been immune to your attacks. These previously undisturbed creatures have been hoarding treasure for a long time, and as such you may find great rewards from killing them...
    • To start the Slayer skill, you should find one of the Slayer Masters who are located in various places around RuneScape. There are five Slayer Masters in total, each catering to different strengths.
    • They can be found in Burthorpe, Morytania, Edgeville Dungeon, Zanaris, and Shilo Village.
    • The Slayer Master will assign you a mission to kill a certain number of a specific type of monster. Some of those monsters will be ordinary monsters, some of them will be the new Slayer skill monsters.
    • By killing the assigned monsters, you will gain Slayer experience. Each Slayer Master has a different selection of enemies they will assign from, each being tailored to suit different levels of players.
    • You may have a different Slayer Master suggested to you as more suitable for your level, but you can ignore that advice if you have a particular choice of Slayer Master to take assignments from.
    • Once you have completed your assignment, you can get another by returning to a Slayer Master. Some monsters will require specific weapons to kill them, (or equipment to protect you against them!) all of which can be purchased from the various Slayer Masters.
    • Slayer levels and equipment required to kill the new monsters can be found in your in-game skill guide by clicking on the slayer skill icon, and also on the manual page.
    • We have also added two new dungeons where the Slayer skill monsters can be found. One of them is the mysterious tower north west of Canifis that many people have been wondering about. The other can be found underground to the east of the Fremennik Province.
    • Be careful if you don't have the slayer level to fight these monsters - they are very dangerous.
    • We have also added greater numbers of certain monsters around the world, to cope with the increased demands created on these creatures by the Slayer Masters.
    • Finally if you get given a target monster that seems a bit hard to do, then perhaps you aren't thinking about it carefully enough. For many of the given tasks there is actually more than one possible target. So try to think what other creatures in the game would also qualify as meeting the requirement. For instance if you're told to slay Blue Dragons and you think that's impossible then think about it for a moment instead, perhaps there is a weaker type of Blue dragon you can slay instead... (i.e Baby Blue dragons). This is true for quite a few of the targets.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The previous Slayer symbol was an animal skull.
  • Players that had a Slayer task before 6 June 2008 lost their task with the Smoking Kills update. Slayer Masters notified players the next time they spoke to them.
  • If you try to invite yourself to a Social Slayer task, you will get the message: If you want something done properly, you need to do it yourself...but not in this case.
