This book does have some nice, practical tips for helping track and reduce spending and even begin saving. There are certainly tips that everyone can use, but much of this is common sense. Don't spend more than what you make. Don't have tons of credit cards. Buy used. Use coupons. Make a budget. If you are looking for some ideas on where to get started, this is a great comprehensive book that is going to give you that. The author gives practical straightforward tips that--IF FOLLOWED--can help you save some money, but don't expect this to be a get rich quick with no effort sort of thing that never works anyway. Even if you follow all the tips and go above and beyond, not everyone is going to retire a millionaire. It just doesn't work like that. But you don't have to work until you die just to pay off half of what you owe either.
I enjoy the straightforward way in which the book is written, but I did find quite a few stereotypes in the book regarding women and gender roles in marriage and the "typical" way to live your life and goals. That's great if you were lucky enough to have parents who set you up for success and lived in and upper middle class neighborhood and went to college with little to know debt, got a great job, then met your spouse, bought a house, and had 2.5 kids in a Leave it to Beaver neighborhood. But then you wouldn't probably be reading this book. An example is the section on engagement rings. If you are reading this book looking for financial tips, you probably shouldn't be looking at spending thousands on an engagement ring. The author then throws in a paragraph stating that men's rings are less expensive so the woman just has to make sure to pay off the credit card before the wedding. This is pretty stereotypical and definitely heteronormative. The whole section is really toned to imply that the bride to be shouldn't be with you to buy the ring, she shouldn't know how much it cost, and the man is responsible for the majority of the decision. All this is after a section about how the couple should work together to make financial decisions before the wedding.
Overall the book can be helpful, so I will give it 4 stars with the disclaimer that as with everything you need to take it with a grain of salt and figure out what is really feasible and applicable in your life and your situation.
