Outlook Inbox view suddenly changed and can't reset to how it was RRS feed

  • Question

  • My Outlook Inbox view suddenly changed the last time I opened Outlook (using Office 365 ProPlus, version 16.0.6001.1034).

I tried resetting the view, but that changed it to something other than what it used to be.

The view in my Sent folder is what I'd like the Inbox to be. I tried saving that view as a new view, then applying it to the Inbox, which got me close to what I wanted. however, all emails were displaying in order of who they were sent to, rather than who they were from.

Here's what it looks like now. I've outlined in red things that have changed. My "sort by" dropdown has disappeared (top-left blank area, as has the "Newest/Oldest" text and sorting arrow. Anew line of icons has appeared beneath the Search field, and the font size of the sender and subject of the message have changed--they used to be on 2 lines, now they're on one line and the font size is smaller.

And here's what my Inbox USED to look like, which is how I'd like to get it back to (this is now how my Sent folder appears):

As noted, I tried creating a view of the Sent folder, then apply it to my Inbox folder, but that caused all emails to display by "Sent To" as the default view rather than Sent From, and I couldn't get that to change and stick each time I'd close and relaunch Outlook.

I'm baffled. I've tried restarting Outlook, running Quick Repair on Office 365, rebooting the computer, launching Outlook in Safe mode, messing with the View...nothing has allowed me to reset my Inbox to how I'd like it to be.

Any ideas for anything else I can try? Thanks.

  • Hi,

It looks like you are viewing your Inbox in Single view. Please try changing to Compact view to see the result. To do this, click your Inbox, click View tab > Change View and then click Compact.

If still not working, please try resetting the Compact View to see if the issue persists.

Please let me know the result.

  • Bingo. Changing to Compact View, then resetting that view, fixed my issue. Thanks!

  • This was helpful! I agree, I don't know why it was so hard to fix. I am very tech savvy, and all I did was change to a different calendar and the whole view changed. It should be easier to switch back. Thanks so much for figuring it out, it was driving me nuts!

  • You are my new hero.  I spend a great chunk of this morning trying to get to the root of my changed view and this is the only thing that worked.  Thanks for taking the time to post.  Love to know how I ended up with the changed view, and why it is indeed so impossible to get back to what I wanted.  Countless hours wasted globally - thanks for boosting productivity MSFT.

  • I, too, had this issue this morning. This process did "resolve" my issue but... the problem itself still exist. My Compact View is incorrect. I have to use this "work-around" to get the view back the way it should display.

How can we escalate this issue back to Microsoft to FIX the issue itself.

  • I have a user with O365 and this exact problem; the suggestion by raborg didn't work: the Compact view is still incorrect.  What we see is the "All" pull-down on the right which contains the selectable column names, amongst a couple others.  Have reset/changed the view multiple times; no effect.  The "All" pull-down selector is the only one there.

    Suggestions?  Thanks!

But in order for it to completely go back to the "default" view, you will also need to click on "reading pane -> right" in the view tab.

    Thanks

  • The marked answer is a great solution - however, it did not work for me. For anyone else who finds this solution does not solve the view problem, try this:

    • Go to the View ribbon
    • Click Change View and select Manage Views
    • Select Compact from the table and click Modify
    • Click Other Settings
    • Now look toward the bottom of the Other Settings box for the section labeled Other Options
    • If the box next to "Use compact layout with widths smaller than..." is checked, try changing the number to 200 or more (I think the default is 125).
    • OR select the radio button next to "Always use compact layout"

I think there is a display scaling issue at play when I move my laptop from stand alone (using the laptop screen) to the USB-C docking station and 27" 4K monitor without rebooting the computer in between...

  • I'm in the same boat. It works, but every time I visit my calendar and then go back to my mailbox, the mail view has reverted to a modified version of compact view that looks completely different. I wind up having to reset the compact view every time I come back to my mail.

I had the outcome with both the original solution and this solution.

  • The problem that i'm finding is that the spacing of the rows on the table part of the view is much taller than before, and it doesn't matter if the font is reduced in size.  Each row seems to stubbornly remain far too tall for what it needs to be.

What options are available for shrinking the vertical spacing?  Seem to having trouble locating this setting in the view options.  Anyone?

Apparently restarting Outlook seemed to address this.  Weird.  Unexpected customer inflicted interaction.

  • Thank you!!

1: Finally a solution for when my Outlook randomly changes its view.  Clicking on Compact View, followed by Reset View worked instantly.

2: This thread assures me that I am not going mad - my Outlook does just randomly change to a completely different view that looks nothing at all like my normal settings - and it's not just me. It is infuriating and I have wasted so much time trying to sort it, at least now I have a quick solution.  I can see from the responses that this continues to be a problem which spans 2015 to 2019.

  • this fixed it thank you. no idea why it would have randomly changed on two of us in the office overnight when nobody was here. glitch for sure.

  • The most easiest way to do this is Go to the View Pane

    Click on the Change view

    Click on Manage Views

Select Compact or any other view from the table

On the right side click on reset and click yes

    It will be done.
