Reviews Summary
This summary was created by AI, based on recent reviews.

Hotel Playa Mazatlan receives accolades for its prime location, with the beach and vibrant street life just steps away, as well as its general cleanliness, boasting a well-maintained and spotless environment. However, guests have called out the hotel for the cacophony of beach bands that can disrupt the tranquility. While the staff is often commended for their friendliness, some guests have encountered inconsistencies in service and amenities, such as the absence of a swim-up bar and variable pool temperatures, leading to mixed feelings about the hotel's overall value. Room experiences also vary, with some enjoying the views and comfort and others troubled by noise and maintenance issues.

5 of us stayed here Feb.23 to Mar 1 . This was the first time my sons girlfriend has been to Mexico, she loves Mexico. The Playa is a beautiful Hotel . The grounds. the pools and the beach are all very nice . We never had a problem finding a place to sit in the sun or shade, and they will bring you drinks at the beach. The staff works very hard to keep things clean, please help them, don`t throw garbage on the beach. Our rooms were kept very clean and we always had lots of bottled water. The food was good ,always found something good to eat,The staff in the buffet were awesome Thanks Jaimie,Jullian,Erik,Pedro,Julio,Gerardo, and everyone else. If you have any questions go visit Shane at the Concierge desk he is always happy to help with a smile on his face. It is noisy all day and well into the night but that did not bother us. we were in 303@304 and the noise was not that bad. I would come back to the Playa,we enjoyed our stay very much. The only complaint I have is that the bed was very hard Please show your appreciation to the hard working staff and Tip, They deserve it . Traveling around in the Red trucks and golf carts are a lot of fun. If anyone is going to do the light house beware , it is a long hike and it is not that easy ,ALOT of stairs and at the top the bathroom is nasty. But the view is incredible. Thanks everyone , hope to see you all again

We have always travelled with Sunwing however this time was a complete disappointment. Our rep showed up for only one day for 5 mins and we never saw him again our entire 2 week trip. We had a very hard time communicating with any of the staff as most spoke no English. The buffet was the same thing every single day unless you spoke or read Spanish you have absolutely no idea what the food was. As for any kind of sanitizing in the hotel it is non existent we never saw one single person cleaning anything the whole time we were here. If you are looking for a nice quiet hotel..DO NOT book here..the hotel sells day passes to the general public the beach though nice is over crowded with locals and their umbrellas and tables etc blocking views and making it so you have to walk right through their gatherings to get to the water. For what we paid I am extremely dissapointed..

The rooms, grounds, amenities and location are 4 to 5 star. If you pay extra for a waterfront room, you can't comfortably use it between 1300 - 2100 every day. Up to 3 beach bands, consisting of brass & drums primarily and up to 15 people each, with speakers and amplifiers, are within 50 yards of your room. I thought we could endure, but it has gotten to where we have to hang out in common areas away from the beach just to be able to relax. Hour after hour after hour, day after day, the noise level is torture. Sometimes each of 3 bands are playing different songs at the same time. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone unless they want a room away from the beach. I am counting the days until we can check out and go home. What was supposed to be a relaxing vacation has turned into a nightmare for 8 hours a day. Never again.

A very friendly and clean hotel. The service is excellent. All of the agents are supportive and helpful especially a few on evenings. We were able to upgrade to a ocean view easily with an agent on evenings. Our needs certainly were met. One of the maids very artistic when placing blankets on our bed. Would stay there again. . Negative Hotel manager keeps ocean view rooms for friends need to be persistent to upgrade.

Fantastic 14 day vacation. Beach and ocean were great lots chairs and shade and the beach service especially from Luis was the highest standard. The view from the room was picture perfect thxs Livent. Food was good with lots of options the barbecue ribs were awesome. The bartender Jesus at the lobby bar makes the best specialty cocktails the lemon drop was perfect. The resort was the cleanest we have seen.
We have been travelling to the Caribbean for over 20 years and this is one of the top resorts we have visited. This is one of the few we would return to.

This hotel is perfectly located. It is right on the beach. You can hear the ocean from your room. You wake up in the morning to the sound of birds and the ocean. Out the front door of the resort are shops bars and restaurants. All within a very short walk. The restaurants are typical of all inclusive resorts and don't make the resort stand out, but also don't detract from it either.
The staff is on top of their game and go above and beyond. There is butler service on the beach and pool areas. The hotel has a rule about pre reserving palapas and chairs around the pool. If unattended for more than an hour your saved spot may not be saved any more.
When we were there, there were a limited amount of smokers. Some smoked on the beach and some smoked outside the sports bar. It was unclear to non smokers where or if there was a smoking area.
The one major detraction to this location was local music being played on the beach for those that wanted to pay for it. It was so loud and there was so much of it. Tubas, trumpets, and drums...incessant. While some seemed to like the ' noise' it was clear that many didn't but were left with 2 choices- tolerate it or get up and leave. You can see that many people got up and went to the pool area.
The hotel offers its own little cave system with pools built into them combined with waterfalls and sinotes. It is kind of a neat feature. The swim up bar was closed when we were there. We are not sure why but we do know that the water in both the cave pools and swim up bar was quite cold.
But overall. A great hotel

The resort itself is gorgeous. Playa Mazatlan was the first resort in the golden zone and retains elements of old world charm. There are numerous pools including a man-made cenote which is like an off-site adventure right on the resort property. The food was basic but tasty and plentiful with a lot of variety. We would highly recommend the Brazilian Swords night if you love meat and the a la carte restaurant, Georgini’s, for excellent Italian food. The staff is phenomenal. Friendly and helpful whether they speak English or not. Learning a few basic Spanish phrases or having a translator app certainly helps. There are so many people (Jorge, Antonio, Carlos, Ramon, Juan, Misael, Francisca) that made our stay more enjoyable but some went above and beyond: Alphonso (lifeguard/security) was the first person I recognized from our stay in 2020. His English is excellent and he can help you with pretty much anything. He’s so friendly and easy to talk to. You can learn a lot from him. Francisco (main security), such a lovely man. He’s usually at the front and would make a point of checking in with us when we left and came back to the resort to see what we were up to and how our outings went. Julio (waiter), so kind and caring and can get you whatever you need. Jose (waiter) is working on his English by singing popular songs. He has a beautiful voice and has so many interesting facts to share about Mazatlan and the culture. Daniel (groundskeeper) doesn’t speak English but he is a great resource if you want to know about the iguanas and plants around the resort. He was also a lot of fun. Our only and biggest complaint was about the room. The first time we stayed we were in the old part of the hotel where the rooms are single file, garden or ocean view on one side and hallway on the other. It was relatively quiet. There was a dresser, 3 different tables, night stand, mini fridge, bathroom bench and a large closet. This time we were in one of the newer sections. It’s basically a tunnel with rooms on both sides and the hall is so echoey you hear every peep, step, cough and movement. The room was extremely basic. No dresser, nightstand, luggage rack, mini fridge or even a single hook in the bathroom for towels. We tried to change rooms but told they were all full. This might have been okay for one week but our stay was 3 weeks and we had to live out of our suitcases (one of which sat on a chair), not an ideal situation at all. We would think that a hotel would put longer term guests in the more comfortable rooms. So, overall, great staff, good/basic food, beautiful place to stay but if you are there for more than a week request a room in the old section.

The hotel has all you need. At times it could be noisy with people partying but I used ear plugs and all was good. The hotel was kept so clean. Sometimes our coffee pods were not replaced but we could have asked. Always lots of water and toilet supplies in the room. Our maid always did little things like fold our clothes.
The mattress is firm and for some that could be a problem.
The hotel is so clean. Easy to get around. Lovely pool.
Very accessible to stores. Easy walk to main street to catch bus to downtown. 11 pesos each way.Market is fun and Vanilla cheaper there. Easy walk down the beach to pick up the Malecon.
We did a bike tour of the city with Blue Foot and it was informative and fun.
The food in main restaurant was OK. The Italian restaurant was amazing. You have to sign up for that but well worth it. Pool bar had snack stuff.

When you wait 15 minutes to get warm water to shower, this tells you something.
When you see mold in the shower, this tells you what?
When you see little ants all over your bed sheets, what does this say?
When you can’t find cheese, banana, grape, strawberries, or even cold cuts on the breakfast buffet, what does this tell you?
When you can’t find someone to speak English, do you think tourists are welcome?
When the AC sounds like you are in a war room, you lucky to get a good night sleep.

We have been to several places in Mexico for the past 15 yrs, but this one is by far, the worst.
Don’t waste your money.

We recently spent 2 weeks at the Playa. We enjoyed the laid back atmosphere and friendly staff. This is an older hotel, but well maintained. The grounds are beautiful...koi ponds, a cenote, hot tub up high on the rocks. The hibiscus flowers were as big as your head! Lots of room under the palapas, or by the pools. The waiters were mostly very attentive and friendly. They worked very hard to insure we enjoyed our stay. The buffet had excellent food, selection and proper temperature. The Italian restaurant was our favourite...beautiful, delicious, well presented and served meals! The Sports Bar felt like home. Xavier and his co-workers were very attentive. We loved the convenience of money changing right at hotel and better rates than uptown! The beach is gorgeous and the ocean is very safe for swimming. The beach vendors were never pushy and very polite. We did not see any timeshare people. The only small negatives were the brass bands playing on the beach...too noisy!! Some of the staff did not have good English skills, but this never bothered us. There were some shows that were enjoyable, and there was a good house band every night. We really enjoyed our stay and loved the convenience of shopping and other restaurants that we visited.

There were many people with kids of all ages. Special kids pools and a kids club.
Answer from Lori Z

I tip for good service - period. I also tend to receive great service when I tip, but hopefully more because I am friendly and polite. I am not a big tipper, but I do enjoy recognizing a staff member who is attentive, caring and those who go above and beyond to make my stay memorable. I tip for housekeeping, restaurants and bars and beach service. I have stayed at many All Inclusive resorts and never received a bill at the end for tips. I see staff working so hard for so little and I do want to let them know I appreciate their work. As I am from Canada, I also only tip with pesos - not sure why Canadians would change to USD currency for tipping in Mexico. I hope that helps.
