Unpopular opinion: I love my job

I really like this job.

Sure customers can be a trip sometimes and be a bit ditzy but hey I've also been that customer asking where the restroom is only to turn around an see the sign right next to me!

I do get tired of hearing; haha must be free!

And there are some annoying aspects of dealing with people, but for the hours and what they ask, it could be way worse

Coming from Asia this isn't too bad a job

I like this post. I really do like it here except for litterwlly ONE person (manager) that makes it hell sometimes. Of all the places to work this place is a cakewalk.

*virtual high-five.

That’s exactly how I feel! It’s that one manager lol

Dude it's so annoying -.- we make such good progress and then he decides to come out of his hidey hole and be like, pull down and count vaccums

Dude.... there's a beartag.... ya but it could be wrong. No one likes you 🤣

u/fadedavacado avatar

As much as I hate to say it those managers are necessary. Creates balance.

Mine is constantly like what are you doing? Or you’re not doing enough I’m like dude shut up I just did all of my opening shit give me a minute

Being "one of those damn MET's" has been great, HD was supposed to be a summer job before I went off to college in the fall of 2020 but the world ended so I never ended up going lol. Working for HD the past 4 years has been great while I'm (slowly) working towards my teaching degree. While it's not something I'd want to do for the rest of my life it's definitely not the worst job in the world. It's decent paying and I've learned a lot of useful stuff just by being around tools, plumbing, and electrical. Retail wise, there's definitely worse jobs to have

u/Excaliburntoast avatar

I upvoted you although I shouldn't because MET is a sworn enemy of mine

u/fayble_guy avatar

Nay, friend. The customer is the enemy....

Na Met is great set schedule weekends and holidays off, I did it for years the moved store side. Store side is great but I do miss weekends off.

u/Excaliburntoast avatar

Work freight they usually get weekends off

Ouch, I couldn't work overnight hours, I'm more of a day person. Store feels too dead without any customers. Cheers to you brother.

I'm an OFA. It's currently pretty laid back. Hardest part is getting a forklift to get overhead down. Most of it is walking around bullshitting with coworkers. I know it'll get more stressful as the weather gets better and we start getting more orders. But it pays better then most of the places around here. Almost everyone at work hates the place. It's got it's pros/cons.

u/MandMs55 avatar

I posted something similar when I was 3 months new and people were convinced that the only reason I could possibly love it is because it's new and exciting and the managers are treating me well to trick me into staying

10 months new now, still absolutely love my job, and genuinely start to miss it if I get 3 days in a row off. Still in lot, a little bit tired of pushing carts, but that's okay. I've become more of a general associate and just go wherever I want in the store and help out wherever is needed, and nobody cares that much because I always make sure there's some carts where they should be and get them all in before closing.

I've become genuine friends with many of my coworkers and I always look forward to seeing them, especially the head cashier and CXM. Some of my coworkers I've even hung out with outside of work and genuinely enjoyed it.

CXM found my Reddit account from my 45 years at HD post and told me not to post about him. I told him "Don't worry, I only have good things to say about you" and his response was "That's a lie and you know it"

But honestly I can't think of a single bad thing to say about him. I love him and am so glad I get to work with him. I swear the dude just radiates love for all of the associates on the floor. I wanna tell him how much I appreciate him so badly but I'm kinda awkward and don't really know how to do it so maybe there's a small chance he'll see this comment and know he's appreciated

I'm leaving in a few weeks to travel for Malaysia. That was the entire point of getting this job, was so I could go to Malaysia. But now I almost don't wanna go to Malaysia, maybe I'll just stay here for another 10 months lol

u/Excaliburntoast avatar

We have a CXM actually two like that

I work overnights and it's even better haha just pop on some music and stock shelves. It can get to be a bit strenuous but it's still really fun to me

Im right there with you. Overnights are a breeze honestly. I'm licensed on everything, and it makes my job 100x easier, and I also do garden recovery. I literally just listen to music and moved dirt lmao

Honestly it’s the easiest job there could possibly be, and it’s hard to get fired from as long as you show up on time. It also doesn’t hurt that I get paid extremely well.

doesnt matter if its on time or not as long as you show up lol

i knew a casheir that had 9 occurrences for being late. she never got fired in 3 years instead she quit cuz she got pregnant.

I second this. Given this is only my second job, I came in with 2+ prior years of retail experience and they hired me on the spot. Now I make almost double to what I used to make at my old job by doing half the amount of work.

As with any job, it has its flaws. But it has definitely helped me financially while I’ve been in school. Management has been very supportive of me furthering my education and working with me on my schedule. And I really enjoy the people I work with.

"This isn't an airport, no need to announce departures.

You didn't like your job boo fuckin hoo

Move on, some of us love our jobs"

Yes we need this kind of positivity as well

Real. This page is full of people who are just anti-work and take some of the most mildest inconveniences and make them into something debilitating.

u/MoleRatBill43 avatar
Edited

Its easier to paint it as anti work instead of actually addressing anything. Having a bad experience with home depot equates to anti work? Orange koolaid schills and plants are strong in this sub reddit lol thats the sentence Id use instead of "anti work" . Nothing wrong with enjoying your job or the company but dont shit on people who didnt share the same experiences or sentiments etc. Especially why im sharing OP's post, hypocritical behavior. You say something bad about home depot= anti work lol

A lot of people here are valid in their complaints. Not every store is the same. But a lot of people as well seem to be upset at their basic responsibilities and it shows that they just don’t want to actually do their job. I have nothing against someone who’s having legitimate issues such as toxic management or hostile environments which is unfortunately present at some HDs. But some people are just like? “I don’t get paid enough to deal with [insert basic responsibility of their job description here].” I used to be one of them.

u/MoleRatBill43 avatar
Edited

“I don’t get paid enough to deal with [insert basic responsibility of their job description here].” no one is talking about that at all so I dont get why you are bringing it up. Its not complicated, if you enjoy your job that's fine, if people have something to say dont shit on them with such venom just because they wanna vent. Telling someone it aint an airport etc. Its rude and if thats a quality you look for in someone thats fine. Either way it dont amount to "antiwork" and again, its a silly copium. Im pointing out the irony in how positive people are considering this guys post but in the same breath, OP will just shit on someone for venting about their job, for the same company you work for. No one is forcing you to respond to them so how about keep your negative smartass remarks to yourself? Thats all I was getting at with OP, now you wanna try and relate to being anti work. No one said anything about responsibilites etc, its about someone being a prick cause they dont like what they are hearing and im pointing it out. So dont spin my comments/narrative into something its not please thank you. Its not complicated and you sure are trying to make it so lol. Anyways, this is the last comment im gonna make, hope you can see it for what it is and not anything to do with work and responsibilities but simply someone being a prick and im pointing out. Adios!!!!

My last job was 13+ hour shifts as a paramedic dealing with trauma cases in Asia.

When I was working for search and rescue with the government it was 48 hour shifts

But stuffing organs back in, pulling people off mountains, and telling people their loved one is dead daily gets rough so this is like a vacation for me

Keep these posts coming! This is the 3rd positive post I’ve seen in the past year and I cannot help but agree. No, I’m not a corporate shill. No, I’m not a manager spying on associates via social media. Just a lowly freight associate who doesn’t hate her job. There are definitely things I dislike and things that can be improved, but having been here 15+ years I can tell things have DEFINITELY and DRASTICALLY changed, mostly for the better. The company then vs now has me wondering how the hell I endured the bullshit in the past while being grateful that I did.

u/fadedavacado avatar

Have you participated in the employee stock purchase the whole time? I remember shares being like 60 bucks… not even sure what they are now…250+?

I wish!!! When I started the stocks were around $40 or something ridiculous. I didn’t start contributing until a few years ago and unfortunately had to tap into some of that because I suck at finances. I know of a few people who have been with the company for 20+ years and have enough stock to retire if they wanted.

We need more positive posts like this. HD is and awesome place to work with really good pay. At my store all my coworkers treat each other with mutual respect, and nobody has a problem with anyone else that I know of. Customers here are anything but normal, and every day has something different. It’s honestly the best job I’ve ever had

I love my job just hate the social politics in that mfer

I loved my job as a HC, but it doesnt pay enough.

I'm from America. Kitchen Designer. Love my job.

u/Excaliburntoast avatar

I love mine too but I'm overnight

Anytime the say "haha must be free" i say, "Nope, that eas yesterday" 😉

I respond: Nope, it means I can make up a price. $5k sound good? No? ok, give me a min to look it up thanks.

I worked at Walmart for two weeks, was fired over a weight restriction. Got hired at HD, and I had no idea how different it was going to be. Benefits (the best benefits? No- but more than associates at other retail stores make), awesome coworkers, I’ve picked up a lot of useful and practical skills, vacation pay, the work isn’t very stressful, and I have good managers who generally want to make their associates feel appreciated. I’ve mostly been a line cook, so even just getting regular paid breaks was a culture shock for me

u/Pain2DaWorld avatar

Yeah I like it too.

I like it too. I'm glad to hear you do too. I get frustrated at policies, returns, and sometimes customers, but I just try to do my thing and help people. :)

I really enjoy it here. It's the longest I have been able to happily hold a job honestly. Of course, there are struggles and stresses, but every day is different, and I'm always learning new things. I do enjoy being challenged, and I'm able to do that here. I have also had MANY jobs that were actually horrible. So ya, not a bad gig at all, and pretty decent pay for retail.

You gave a deeper sense of appreciation. Americans do not realize how easy they have it. Everything is taken for granted.

u/Sonofpern avatar

I find most people at my store who complain a lot are the ones who slack off the most, and if you ask around they were slackers before management got on their ass. My store has decent management as long as nothing major goes wrong. Im an OFA so if it's busy, my day goes by fast, if it's slow, I find a way to stay busy. If you dont want to stay busy, work somewhere else?

u/New-Complaint-7055 avatar

I love my job and this post!

Dirty low down manager here, just here to say that this is a great place to work at its core. Yes, it depends a lot on the management team at each store on how good/bad the working conditions can be/get. But at the end of the day, there are still SOOO MANY far WORSE places to work.

If you show up on time, do your job, and be at minimum a decent human being to others - there’s literally nothing they can do to hurt/fire you. I’ve worked for the company for 15+yrs, no degree beyond a high school diploma, worked my way up from PT service desk all the way to ASM. I drank the cool aide and I’m good with it.

u/ObjectiveUnhappy468 avatar

18+ years of having fun and looking forward to each shift. If you are not having fun, then you are working and work is not fun. If you do not like your job, go find one that you will look forward to go to each day.

I think some people fit right into the puzzle of life they're living in, good to see positivity from the internet for a change.

u/SingleDadSoundcloud avatar

I feel the same, truthfully. I love the work itself, I love the opportunities I had for the short time I took promotions, I even love my customers. It's so rewarding winning over the difficult ones. It's like a fun little game I play. What's making it hard for me right now is management. They've burnt me out and broke me down and there's no chance they'd approve a transfer, if they even did they'd do anything to sabotage my chances of the other store taking me. It's a shame where I'm at they break down their best employees. Overall I still love the job and despite it being a corporation they really do take care of their people more than other places.

Here I put I my 2cents worth from Western Canada I really enjoy working with the people I am lucky to work with and the company has been great to me. Yes there are some customers that rub me the wrong way (man do they and I am slowly learning how to deal with that) I do like finding that thing that helps or making a suggestion that helps customers and ever cut some wood for them

u/Necessary_Art9409 avatar

I'm very happy with my job at the pro desk. Yay!

u/JE1DYN avatar

It really isn't a bad job, i enjoy my work. Workplace environment is chill and i enjoy my coworkers. Getting along with everyone feelsgoodman.

I also love it; that said, I'm not sure I could live on the salary if that was my main source of income

u/NotKirainu avatar

It really does depend on the store. I lucked out by having a great store, my manager is a sweet woman who watches out for the crew right now but I know that there are other stores were the manager could care less about you

I don't think I'd go so far as saying I love my job, but for the most part I do like it and a lot of the people I work with. Coming from Walmart, the customers can be rude but no worse than my last job and there's a lot fewer crazy ones. Most of the folks on my team are good coworkers and I've bonded more with them than I have at pretty well any other job, and my manager is a genuinely great person to work under. Not perfect by any means, but respect, understanding, and general effort are such basic yet often missing qualities to have in leadership and dude has all that in spades. Most of my complaints really stem from corporate issues, and well... Retail companies generally don't become as large as these without questionable judgement and skewed morals and I've learned it's a trade-off for the benefits and resources that a large company can offer that small companies typically can't.

Having the luck to have entered into the company on MET I'm sure has skewed my views a bit. I know storeside doesn't have many of the luxuries we do, especially in regards to weekday scheduling and several paid holidays. And them having to answer to 40 managers vs our smaller management structure always makes things more difficult.

I work service desk, and I gotta say I’ve worked some really shitty CS jobs but this ones the best I’ve had! Like yea there are some bad customers but I’ve worked places with much worse. At least here 90% of the upset customers are justified in their anger. Ez fun job ngl and most fun crew I’ve ever worked with

u/luneywoons avatar

my favorite part are my coworkers because most everyone there are really friendly people. I'm friends with some of mine too

u/Doozer1970 avatar

I really like my job here too. When it comes to good places to work, I hit the HD lottery. We have a good management team, and I get along with 98% of the people here. I just avoid the bad ones. I was thoroughly miserable in my last job.

I love it here, too. I've been here for almost 2 years. I've always felt strange about liking my job because all I hear from people is the negative stuff. During the global pandemic, I worked as a vet tech in training in a small mom and pop pet shop where I dealt with a store manager who was completely emotionally unstable. She would verbally and sometimes physically abuse us and publicly humilate us, calling it "discipline." I would often leave my shifts feeling worse than when I came in. The final straw was when my uncle passed away. My fathers youngest brother died at 43 from a heart attack. I had asked that my former employer (let's call her Jane) not text me on my only day off due to the funeral taking place then. The entire time I was at the funeral, she blew up my phone. Apparently, she got into a fight with the assistant store manager and didnt want to be there anymore she "couldnt keep giving a fuck" anymore and wanted me to come in for her. I explained to her that I couldn't and was at the funeral. She blew up on me and proceeded to berate me for not coming in. I did not request this day off, I was unscheduled. I ended the convo by telling her off and hanging up. I quit after being hired by HD. Since working here, I feel supported and appreciated it was a whirlwind going from a volatile toxic place to a place so wholesome and welcoming, I often found myself losing composure because I felt safe for once. My SM is awesome, and he is very protective over us and very kind. He completely gets me, and so does the rest of the management team. Almost two years later, and I'm already a DH, and I have 2 VP awards and 11 Homers. I've learned to really grow into my own, but also to heal from the past. Tldr: I love working at Home Depot. This place allowed me to truly step into my fullest power.

Haha I’m not sure what you were doing in Asia, but coming from military and construction I can say the lifestyle is miles better than most jobs I’ve had. My biggest problems are waiting on licenses and coworkers getting stressed for their own reasons. I’ve only been here a couple months but love the environment if staffed correctly. I was also a bartender for 5 years so I don’t get as phased with rude customers but can adequately respectfully help them get no where if they want to act out but usually the customers are delightful. Lifestyle is the biggest change positively from hard labour jobs.

It is good to see more positivity. I will admit that I could try to be a bit more positive on here, and have been trying to adjust my outlook/attitude about the job. When at work, I noticed that I am more confident than before, due to everything I have learned in the depts. I've worked (three of them, so far). And, that confidence translates to being in a better mood, more often than not.

There will always be rougher days that get us down, sure. But the important thing to remember is that us associates are in a unique position to help others. It's the kind of environment that we're in that encourages us to learn more about the products, beyond their availability and in-store location. Of course, there will be limitations, based on what we do, so as long as we keep doing our best, customers and coworkers alike will take notice. And, they will generally be more appreciative of our efforts.

I liked it but then I realized I only liked my customers and hated like everything else

Now my new job is the exact opposite. I hate the customers but love everything else

I work freight team at my store. And I am that guy who loves his job. No customers trying to give me their bad day. And anything beats no job at all.

u/SirGingy avatar

Nothing wrong with loving your job,

Personally my life moto is "No employee wants to be a Squidward."

That being said I did find a new job a quit The Home Depot 5 months ago so take that as you will.

TLDR: love the job hate being a baby sitter

Long version: I don't hate my position (over nights garden recovery) nor the hours or pay. Just my store, it truly feels like I'm a underpaid and glorified babysitter. Like the shift before me half-assed covering the plants when it was getting down to 30°F and the last 5 nights I've been there I've had to finish the job, or they don't delete the tags (thats across the whole store and same for reallocating pallets) I love my coworkers (except my boss an another who is still new but is more useless then a monkey with no legs n arms). There is no comment between management and even between us and the managers. And on top of that we don't have any overhead space for our reg overstock or pallets and the last 2 to 3 months frieght team has consistently refilled receiving with unfinished freight as they don't have enough people cause unload has all the hours and what people they do have in freight (10) only 5 of em are doing they job effectively and fast while the others waste time on they phone or sleeping in the bathroom

I dont remember posting this 🤔

Lol Im also garden recovery and Im just about in the same situation as you.

If the pay was good I’d definitely stay long term, the job itself is one of the best I’ve had ( at least speciality is )

It's not a bad job. Every job has its ups and downs. I actually witnessed a cashier at the time clock telling herself out loud "Today is going to be a good day. Today is going to be a good day." It caught my attention. She's a newer cashier, but she was onto something in a way. It doesn't always work out for the positive attitude, but it always works out for the negative attitude. If you think that the job is going to suck today, it will.

I dunno, I get 20.50 an hour. Makes it well worth it considering what else I'd be looking at around my neck of the woods. 18 an hour elsewhere if I get really lucky? Maybe the blue hardware store would give me something similar? I don't know, I don't care. I'll just continue working at the orange hardware store, figure out my way into a management position. Unless I am tempted with a better option, then that's the plan.

Thank you for posting this! ME TOO! I have a lot of experience in my field of expertise from owning my own company with over 50 employees to being a Sales Manager in the healthcare world. I am a COS at HD now since my own company closed due to Covid. I love the people I work with and coming up with a satisfactory solution for our customers. Yes, many of them are angry, uncooperative, rude, demeaning but for me it’s all in the mindset!

Glad to hear worked at the depot for 10 years, held different positions can be stressful at times, but I like it. I love the people I work with.

I love my job too and sometimes I get disheartened seeing all the sadness / disappointment on this sub. Occasionally I have a coworker that makes my day a bit rougher but overall I can’t complain.

I feel like Home Depot has the potential to be the best entry achievable job but it really depends on the location and group of people running the store

Cashier here. I like my job. I like the associates, the customers are so-so. But it’s pretty easy and has good pay, at least in my case. It also allows me to go to school and still be able to study. I am not gonna lie and say everything is perfect, but it’s not the worst. I used to work fast food, and if you wanna talk about shitty people, that’s where you’ll find them. I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve almost been hit by a car, had a drink thrown at me, and the sexual harassment. Know no one cares, but THD has been a total upgrade for me.

Home depot played a part in saving my life! Found out I was chronically sick because of the healthy living blood tests. I love my people
