On July 29, 1949, Archbishop Moses Kiley decreed that a new parish be established to serve the North Shore area, and Holy Family Congregation was born. The vision was to have a parish and school community served by an on-site convent of nuns who would staff the school as teachers.
Ground-breaking for the school began on December 3, 1950. Religious Education classes were held at Whitefish Bay High School until October 1952 as the school building was under construction. In October 1952, the first Mass was celebrated in the new "church," which is now the school gymnasium.
In September 1953, 280 students enrolled in first through sixth grades. Seventh and eighth grades were added the next two years. The school building was offically dedicated in November 1955 by Archbishop Albert Meyer. The adjoining convent was built and dedicated on November 20, 1960.
Fundraising for the church building began in 1965. The building would include the main place of worship, a meeting hall, parish offices and a residence for the priests. On November 30, 1969, Fr Wollet blessed the cornerstore; and on December 7, 1969, the first Mass was offered in the new church. The altar was consecrated on April 20, 1972. The church hall was dedicated on June 15, 1986.
Holy Family Congregation will celebrate its 75th Anniversary as a parish in 2024.
