The "Walk" is for those involved in the entertainment industry including those that have contributed a significant "improvement" to the industry that cannot be measured in terms of the most performances, or recordings made or movies made otherwise in the early days the wives of the Chamber of Commerce members might have to apologize to their Sunday School Trustees for allowing that "vamp" to get a star just because sales were the guarantee presentation of a star. Proposed changes

I'm in the process of doing a major overhaul of this list.

I'm ready to break it into five sections, one for each type of star awarded.

In each section will be a table, including the name of the honoree, the address of the star, and the date that the star was awarded. Additional columns might include a Yes/No box for multiple award winners, and another for poshumous award. Any suggestions for other information to include?

I have most of this data nearly ready for insertion, (not including the additional columns ideas) but doing so is a very large change, so I wanted to post to the talk page and wait a few days for feedback before making the change.

After I do this, I intend to go through each star's page and post the type and address(es) of their awards on their article page.

I think Unfocused has good ideas, but I think the list should not be broken up in sections. Everyone should be in strict alphabetical order, as they are now. However, I think everyone should also have a note as to when they where awarded their star(s), what category(ies) it is, and the address of the star. John Anderson 13:27, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Another idea: What about a column where the nationality of the honoree is mentioned? Sure, most of them are Americans, but many are also from other countries. For Americans perhaps the home state could be mentioned too? John Anderson 09:27, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

If we do any changes like the ones I and Unfocused discuss above, I don't see that we have the room nor the need for making more columns on the page. In a effort to get this moving, and being bold, I have changed the A section of the list, using the list from here (mostly because it is the easiest list I could find to convert the information from). Hopefully by adding the extra information, it will reduce the number of 'false' inclusions in the list (of which there appear to be quite a few). Nice! But I would suggest to keep the form Firstname Lastname which is easier to read, rather than Lastname, Firstname which you have changed it to. Don't you think so? I also think the year (or even the date) the star was awarded should be in a separate coloumn, but we can add that later.

One change I would like to see is the exact dates of the ceremonies, because I'm a celebrity historian and I would love to know when they officially got their star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. IMDB are dating the stars on the bios, so that could be used to populate a column when more of these have been dated (I don't think there are that many at the moment). This information might also be mentioned in the articles, but it would be good if another source could be found. If a format can be agreed, whether it is just the year or the exact date, then we could start (there's quite a few so we best do it right first time round and it's going to take a while!). Regarding the nationality, quite a few have duel nationality so that issue would have to be addressed; we could list country of birth instead? I think that even if the exact date of award was found, I don't think it would add anything more than the year alone would. Taking the latest star, a possible format could be:

Although I think that maybe only non-Americans or those with dual nationality should be 'flagged' as the majority of people are American and I think noting those would detract from those with a flag. While the flags seem like a good idea, I got cautioned about using them in biographies earlier today on the basis that they're overused. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Use_of_flags_in_articles). Perhaps a column with nationality (at the time the star was awarded) written out would be easiest to read. Also, I'd like to see the complete date the award was awarded, and a separate column for when the ceremony took place, which could be years later. "Pending" could be used if the ceremony has not yet taken place. Example below (dates made up):

Don't know if this discussion is going anywhere, but the year or date of the award really should be included. Also this should be combined into a single sortable table so each reader can view the list in the order they prefer. Vegaswikian 07:55, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

The situation with nationality usually is enveloped with the idea of what is someone's ethnicity and that just as is a name not consistent or identifiable without an extended period of examination or scientific testing. Some one could be born in a place that is not from where their people have been for any more period of time than between the time of conception and birth and if they are there for just a short period following are no more of that nation than someone being born on an airplane over the Atlantic Ocean. Countries that have long had a colonial or occupied status or history could very well have people that have been there since occupation with plenty of "natives" or even far more of them than can be matched by intruders yet that itself does not make them share the same ethnicity. People from those countries that have as part of their history large amounts of immigration settlement would find it difficult to determine if one's genetics are more important than their patriotism. Also, the places from where we come is not always to where we live and to then identify oneself having been born and raised in one country to then identify themselves that of another country not based on citizenship conversion but living there without a body of work in that country's cinema, theater or television could be regarded with an air of being preposterous.A1Houseboy (talk) 23:37, 19 December 2013 (UTC)

Jack Smith

I have a feeling that the Jack Smith who is on the list is the singer "Whispering" Jack Smith, not the New York-based underground filmmaker. I'm assuming that the Jack Smith (music) stub is the correct one for "Whispering" Jack Smith. The old link went to a stub for Jack Smith (Actor) which was redundant and contained less information on the underground filmmaker than Jack Smith (Film Director) which is where I am moving most links pertaining to the director of the underground film "Flaming Creatures"—Preceding unsigned comment added by Larrybob (talk) • contribs) 23:07, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Later note -- I've since discovered there were two Jack Smiths who acted in Hollywood movies and were singers -- the aforementioned "Whispering" Jack Smith whose career peaked in the 1920s/30s and a later "Smilin'" Jack Smith who acted in a film in 1951 with Doris Day. John Hall

Can anyone tell me which John Hall has a star? The website says he was in the movies, but there's no obvious movie John Hall in Wikipedia, and IMDB has 40+ choices. Simon12 04:41, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

No response, so lets ask a related question. The Jon Hall artcicle claims he has two stars, for Motion Pictures at 1724 Vine Street, and for television at 6933 Hollywood Boulevard. But the web site has the star at 1724 Vine Street for a "John Hall" in motion pictures. The one at 6933 Hollywood Boulevard is for a Jon Hall, but for television, but the Jon Hall in the article seems to have no TV activity. Any Jon/John Hall experts who can clarify this? Well, a look at IMDB says he has both stars, and that he did do some TV work. Looks like the Walk of Fame website has the name spelled wrong for the start at 1724 Vine Street. I'm going to pipe the John Hall to Jon Hall. Simon12 02:08, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

Fictional Characters

I think this list should make note of recipients of the reward who are fictional characters, as opposed to real people. There are quite a few, from Big Bird to Godzilla. It's an interesting peice of information which wouldn't take much work. I'd do it myself, but I'm not sure how we should go about it. I don't think that just marking these would be of any benefit, as there is already a list on the main article. This could be included in a 'Notable for..' or 'Comment' column which I think may be useful, as would the star number and award date, but with over 2000 people and information that is difficult to find, this would be a bit of a task! mattbr³⁰ 09:58, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Harry Potter

- James Bacon – Motion Picture / TV Actor - Not a Recording Artist [Corrected - 9/22/09]

- Frankie Carle – Star Address of 1751 Hollywood Boulevard Seems Way off the Beaten Path – Cited as 1767 Vine St [1751 address correct per HWoF website]

- Joni James & Sonny James – Noted as 1 Star – Apparently Are Unrelated Non-Collaborators[Single Star correct per HWoF website]

Incorrect as per Hollywood Chamber of Commerce (www.hollywoodchamber.net) -- called at (323) 469-8311 on 5/24/2010 and confirmed that the two have separate stars. As a defense for some inconsistencies being about where a person's star may be located is that bestowing a star to someone does not entitle them to a particular piece of real estate except anywhere on the walk and when there is renovation of the walk that can mean that if the order of the stars is not made then they may be installed in a location other than where installed at the presentation ceremony or reinstallation following construction. As in situations in which a building is being worked on, the construction company may take the added precaution of removing the sidewalk and thus that portion of the walk for safety reasons as people, supplies and equipment pass over them and potentially result in damage. Short of staking withholding an occupation permit a star can be installed in any place in that area according to the whims of the construction crew and not necessarily noticed an difference unless they space them in a pattern other than what is more used for the remainder. Joni James and Sonny James

For some reason, probably an innocent mistake, Sonny and Joni James were listed as sharing the same star. Although they both share the same stage surname (James), they have nothing to do with each other, either personally or professionally. I confirmed by calling the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce (www.hollywoodchamber.net) at (323) 469-8311 and confirmed that the two have separate stars and updated the list accordingly. Perry Como

The Hollywood Walk of Fame official website shows Perry Como with only two stars -- TV and Radio. Some reliable sources credit him with a third star for Recording. Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams

The list has these individuals as one item, but they actually have two separate stars; the stars just happen to be near each other geographically. They have individual stars. (There are a lot of mistakes on the Chamber website - the LA Times Starwalk site is much more reliable.)

Dates for Individual Stars

I note that the Hollywood Walk of Fame official website is now providing information on the date that each star was awarded. It would require a lot of work, but I think that the additional information would be of interest in this article. No objection from here - if by "official website" you mean the Chamber of Commerce site. If you mean HWOF.com, that's not official, and it's riddled with errors. (I think the Chamber finally made them post a disclaimer that they were not only not "official", but had no affiliation with anything remotely official.)

From a practical standpoint, though, yes - it would be a lot of work. The original 1,550 stars all have the same award date, but the other 900 or so would need to be researched individually. Hyphened/Double barrelled surnames

Hi, I was wondering if there is any rule regarding where people with hyphened or double barrel surnames are placed, eg 'Julia Louis-Dreyfus' has been listed twice under 'D' and 'L' for sometime; I don't think honorees need to be listed twice. Susan Saint James for example is listed under 'S', but Marco Antonio Solís is listed under 'S' as well. This strikes me as a common-sense issue: The list is alphabetized by last names. Susan Saint James's last name is "Saint James", so it goes under "S." Marco Antonio Solis's last name is "Solis", so it goes under "S" too. It's usually pretty easy to distinguish a middle name from a 2-word last name. Any names where the distinction is not obvious can be handled on a case-by-case basis. DoctorJoeE (talk) 21:09, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

Robert Downey Jr.

Contrary to press reports, Robert Downey Jr. does not have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The press reports from late 2009 inproperly identified the placement of his had/footprints at the Chinese Theatre as a 'Star' -- these are two different honors. Do we want / need an image?

A recent edit has removed the image one of the actual 'stars' on teh walk of fame as 'irrelevant'. I find theg inclusion of the image to be both relevant and interesting. Is there a consensus opinion on this? Run Amok (talk) 19:59, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

Per this BBC source, Danny DeVito has received a star. Per this HWoF website, it's the "2,445th Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the Category of Television", located at 6906 Hollywood Boulevard. Janet Jackson

Does Janet Jackson actually have her own star at 1500 Vine, or is this just "The Jacksons" star at that location? Jamie Lowe hoax

For a long time, there was a listing of a star at 6778 Hollywood Blvd. for one Jamie Lowe, a redlink. There was absolutely no info on who this Lowe was/is, so I contacted Ana Martinez and Marlene Panoyan at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce website on September 1 asking who this guy/gal is/was. The next day Ms. Martinez responded, claiming there were only two Lowes on the HWOF, and denied there was any Jamie Lowe star. Too hard to navigate

I agree, sorting alphabetically is really hard to navigate if you're looking just to see who was nominated. I think sorting by year would be more appropriate because I figure someone would see if a star has a star by going to that star's wikipedia page rather than searching through here. Also I think there should be a section for people who turned it down such as Mariah Carey and Madonna, and a section for current nominees with no star unveiled yet. It is always possible to have the charts converted to sortable but the situation with that is it sorts on the first character rather than the skipping over to the last name. This would be an overall activity for some then to go through the talk page suggestions and clear up things as well. No. You may read somewhere on the official site (the "Frequently Asked Questions" or History page?) that they never remove stars, for any reason, except temporarily for construction work on the sidewalk. Can't find the text on the site anymore, so maybe they are re-thinking that policy. The 3 names mentioned—in case anyone's still wondering a year later—never had stars. Brian W. Fan made stars

This may sound callous, but no, otherwise nearly every famous entertainer without a star would end up on this list after they die—there are 100's of blank stars on the walk. You, or a fan club, could nominate anyone famous enough for consideration posthumously, after a 5 year waiting period and $40,000 (currently) are raised for the installation and maintenance of a real star. Potentially mis-categorized names

The following names are potentially mis-categorized (besides the 16 other names just fixed, which were all obviously wrong according to the usual sources - the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce site ("official" site) and the LA Times Star Walk site): Name : Current cat → Proper cat (?)

• Eddy Arnold (not Edward) : Radio → Recording ("officially" Radio, but the LA Times states Music/Recording with a matching photo, which may be due to an initial placement mistake or a subsequent repair mistake)
• Billy Barty : TV → Motion pictures (the official site & a document link found there both state 'motion pictures' and the enlarged photo shows what appears to be a film camera, but the LA Times photo has a TV set which, however, may be due to a subsequent repair mistake)
• Monty Woolley : TV → Motion pictures (the official site states 'motion pictures', but the LA Times photo has a TV set, which the current Wiki article claims is the mistake; Woolley had about 30 film credits but only 2 TV credits, apparently 1 episode in each of 2 programs, so most likely a motion pictures star)

Should the list be combined into a single sortable table?

The question was asked over 9 years ago by another editor, but ignored (see Proposed changes section). Converting to a single sortable table seems like a reasonable request. Still wondering why a 2 column, separate tables format with letter links was chosen when searching by name is as easy as Ctrl-F (find within a page). Sarah Vaughan

Does she really have 2 stars - in the same category? Doesn't seem logical; she didn't reinvent herself & go in a completely different musical direction to justify 2 stars in the same category. Seems like it's just a mistake on the walkoffame website, and on the LA Times website which shows identical photos, down to the marks on the star & sidewalk. Maybe they placed two stars by mistake, or there's a more obscure Sarah Vaughan recording artist, or an actress with that name who got the wrong icon placed on their star? Anyway, she was 36 in 1960 (substantially younger than the average age of star recipients, but a popular artist in the 1950s; 1960 was the initial year of star placement) & she went on to much wider international success later, in the 1970s and 80s, with Grammy awards, etc. Nearly all other sources only mention the 1985 star and say "a star" not two stars, or "second star" which would seem to be very noteworthy if true: newarksymphonyhall.org, crossroadstheatrecompany.org, famoussingers.org, biography.com, imdb.com... Does anyone who lives in LA have some time to check the stars at those addresses? Or maybe the woman who currently organizes the HWoF events would answer an email. Would be interesting to know. I can't find Kim Amidon

While trying to make an Arabic list for this article I discovered some differences between the languages.

• The French and Spanish articles say that Mark Wallengren & Kim Amidon have a star in the walk of fame but not in the English one
• The Spanish article includes the nationality but the English one doesn't
• The French article includes the dates which is nice, I think
• Roy Acuff exists in the English article but not the French one

Hey LarkCGN, thank you for providing a link to the photo of the other star that does indeed have a TV icon, which only seems proper since, arguably or certainly, Lindsay Wagner's greatest claim to lasting fame is as TV's The Bionic Woman nearly half a century ago.

A number of celebrities have more than one star on Hollywood Walk, with Gene Autry being the answer to the question, "who has the most stars?" — he is the sole celebrity with five (film, TV, radio, music and live performance).

Lindsay Wagner, however, is listed as having only a single star and that star has a motion picture camera icon, not a TV one. A search for photo of Lindsay Wagner star on Hollywood Walk of Fame brings up images of both the star with the film icon and the star with the TV icon, but the only address given is for the star with the film icon. The star with the TV image does appear to be imbedded within what seems to be a sidewalk, but no indication as to where it might be, if anywhere.

As for her Emmy, IMDb shows that her single nomination resulted in a win, although the manner in which it is presented on the TV Academy website might cause some uncertainty because its text — "1 Nomination | 1 Emmy" "Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series - 1977", could be understood to indicate that in 1977 she received a nomination in addition to a separate Emmy win.

Finally, there are various stars on the Walk of Fame that are misspelled and mislabeled, as listed under List of stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame#Notes, such as the star for heavyset film and TV character actor Edward Arnold, which has a "Recording" icon, obviously confusing him with country music star Eddy Arnold. Another example is Bill Cunningham a radio and TV broadcaster from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s (host of 1952's Meet the Boss on TV), whose star was installed in 1960, when another radio and TV broadcaster, Bill Cunningham (talk show host) was 13 years old. It should be noted that the unveiling of the star for Aerosmith was scheduled to take place in February 2019, but it was postponed due to bad weather and has not been rescheduled. Wrong dates?
