There was indeed, a hole in the ground.
An interesting watch post-Evil Dead Rise. Some good scares and camerawork, something we see a lot more in Rise, but overall a by-the-book and safe horror movie. Kind of wish it got the Rise treatment because the story is interesting enough to be completely bonkers.
Excited to see where Cronin goes next!
There’s really nothing terribly original about A Hole in the Ground, but that’s pretty much the only thing that holds it back. The story of a mother dealing with the possibility that her child is not her own and is in fact and evil doppelgänger is one that we’ve seen plenty of times before and yet everything here is done so incredibly well in spite of the familiar material.
The rural Irish atmosphere is something that immediately draws me into any film. In spite of the plot taking place in current time, there’s something so creepy and far behind about the remote locale and it’s backwoods way of life.
Director Lee Cronin manages to conjure up a few genuinely terrifying sequences…

Elevates its familiar premise through exceptional filmmaking, ambiguity, thematic depth, and avoiding and/or subverting tired clichés. For a first-time feature filmmaker, co-writer/director Lee Cronin shows a ton of potential in horror filmmaking. This is a film that mostly aims to scare, and it totally works. The cinematography, editing, score and sound design are top notch, all not only perfectly utilized to scare, whether it be through jump scares (all of which have perfect buildup and payoff, and are highly effective as a result) or disturbing imagery, but also to create an atmosphere full of so much dread and tension, utilizing its slow-burn pacing to maximum potential.
That said, The Hole in the Ground is more than just a scare…

Not sure if I’m completely sold on Lee Cronin just yet. Evil Dead Rise was alright, but the writing was really poor while The Hole in the Ground had decent writing, but overall pretty bland.
I think this could’ve easily been a 40 minute short. Although it has a 90 minute runtime, the film drags especially in the second act. The acting from the kid was pretty bad and our lead was just okay.
The final 20 minutes save this from being a complete waste of time as it features some dark, atmospheric “horror.” I also enjoyed the score. I know Lee will get more opportunities after the success of his remake of Evil Dead, and I hope I can appreciate his next work more.
I don’t remember anyone ever warning me about this, but after you have kids your nightmares change. My nights used to be midnight marathons chock full of zombies, monsters, and ghouls.
