Only 10-20 minutes walk from tourist centre. Beautiful castle with some interesting history. All of the rooms we visited were well preserved or refurbished. The guided tour was very good and well organised. The little gardens in front very cute. Needs booking in advance and you have to wait for your preassigned guided tour slot.

The tour of the castle is very impressive but, to me, incomplete. You see the rooms used by the family and they are fascinating and impressive but there is nothing to see relating to the people who worked there. It would have been interesting to see the servants' quarters and to hear something of what life was like in the castle both for the family and the servants. One note of advice - book your tickets online through the official castle website before you go. It's easy to do and, if you book a few weeks in advance, you'll be sure of being able to visit the castle on a day and at a time of your choosing. Just a note of advice if you want to make Hohenschwangau village a touring base for your holiday. The village is a single street with a few hotels and some shops selling tourist souvenirs. It leads only to Alpsee which has the Museum der bayerischen Konige near the shore. The scenery is lovely but if you want more to see and do, I'd recommend staying in Fussen which is about 15 minutes away by car (there's also a bus route).

We definitively do not agree with the reviews that say that the visit of this castle is not worth ! It is: it takes 45 minutes, and you're shown about 10 rooms on 3 floors. The fact that our guide was very kind and we could interact with her and that she provided for us the audio-guide as we were Italians in a German guided tour (+ another foreign couple) and we could hear both the guide and the audio-guide, has been a plus ! I'm not used to give tips: this time I was pleased to give.
