This is a thoughtful and comprehensive history of the Republican Party in the United States. Gould is to be commended for his forthright analysis that reflects reality, rather than hesitating to do so in order to avoid giving offense. Too often in modern American politics, those who say: "He tells it like it is!" really mean he tells it the way they think it should be told. In Gould's case, he does "tell it like it is;" he bases his evaluation on facts, not presupposition, even when that means he challenges what others believe.

Good Beginning and a Disappointing Finish

For the most part this book offers a detailed analytical and objective history of the Republican Party from its founding to the beginning of the Obama administration. Its focus is on the national party so that it deals largely with presidential elections and policies pursued by the Republicans on a national level. In striving to appear fair, Gould generally has kind things to say about nearly all Republican presidents up to 1980 including Warren Harding and even Richard Nixon. However, it is clear, even here, that he strongly favors the progressive wing of the Party, with Theodore Roosevelt as his ideal Republican President. After 1980, however, the tone and objectivity of the book change dramatically as it descends to a near diatribe against the Party due to its growing conservatism.

For years a friend of mine—a Rockefeller Republican who had served as a high official in the Eisenhower and Ford administrations—kept asking me, “What on earth has happened to my party?” Were he still alive, I would present him with this book for the answers. Lewis L. Gould shows how the party that stood for a strong federal government became the party of states’ rights; how the party that subsidized national infrastructure turned into a party that cringed at the costs; how the party that originally sought to advance science-driven technology soured on science; and how the party that originally sought to expand the electorate now discourages minorities from casting ballots. Gould’s core insight is that the GOP has always regarded itself as the country’s sole legitimate governing party. Today, the GOP dismisses the Democratic Party as illegitimate exactly as it did in the 1860s—yet the Democrats now take the very positions that originally characterized the Republican Party. Gould ends his book by addressing the way in which the GOP’s “revolutionary aims” play out in the era of Barack Obama, and the modern crisis of American democracy. How, over a century and a half, the party of Lincoln and Seward turned into the party of Cruz and Palin makes for quite a story.

Karl Marx was right. Eventually our society will be controlled by the highest bidder. That's the history of the Republican Party. Using and lying about religion, social issues, and scaring the public is standard operating procedure.
This book is very detailed about the GOP and the reader can get lost in the weeds if you lose the big picture.
