About the Author

BORN AND RAISED in the heart of the Appalachia, Amber spent her childhood growing up on gravel roads and playing Pokémon Red on her Game Boy Color. At the age of 10, she discovered her fascination with creative writing and turned a 1-page homework assignment into a 35-page document for her 5th grade teacher. Less than a year later, she wrote her very first book about a female basketball player with leukemia. She will spare you the pain from having to read it. After graduating Magna Cum Laude from West Virginia University in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in English literature and a concentration in creative writing, Amber moved to northern Alabama. She is currently employed as a senior technical writer and Scrum Master for a software company. In her free time, she enjoys playing TERA and visiting local cafés with girlfriends. Amber is part of the West Virginia Writers Group, Inc., the Alabama Writers' Forum, and the Alabama Writers Conclave. Her work has been featured in multiple literary journals, magazines, and anthologies around the world. Amber lives in Alabama with her dog, Ahri. --This text refers to the hardcover edition.

Born and raised in the heart of the Appalachia, Amber spent her childhood growing up on gravel roads and playing Pokémon Red on her Game Boy Color. At the age of 10, she discovered her fascination with creative writing and turned a 1-page homework assignment into a 35-page document for her 5th grade teacher. After graduating Magna Cum Laude from West Virginia University in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in English literature and a concentration in creative writing, Amber moved to northern Alabama. She married her husband after meeting him in a Dragon Ball Z chat room. She is currently employed as a senior technical writer and Scrum Master for a software company. In her free time, she enjoys playing TERA and visiting local cafés with girlfriends.

Amber is part of the West Virginia Writers Group, Inc., the Alabama Writers’ Forum, and the Alabama Writers Conclave. She is also the Editor-in-Chief for the Cold Creek Review literary journal. Her work has been featured in multiple literary journals, magazines, and anthologies around the world.

Amber lives in Alabama with her husband and two dogs, Ahri and Ziggs.

This collection of auto-biographical stories and poems, "inspired by real-life occurrences of either the author or someone she knows," provides a glimpse into the dark underworld of rural, poor childhood. Things happen. In CATALYST, "he sneaks in my room after I go to bed" starts the story, and innocence is lost through naivete. In WENT WITHOUT US, too much drinking leads to an unfortunate accident, and a cousin dies. Life is dangerous. Old abandoned cabins have secrets. Fathers molest daughters. Grandmothers share moonshine. A sister is lost. Hope is scarce or non-existent, and grief has a bite. MOUNTAIN FEVER: WORDS FROM WEST VIRGINIA shows a world that distinct from suburban America, not exactly frozen in time, yet offline.

Emotional Stories and Poems

“Mountain Fever” is a collection of powerful stories and poems that evoke deep emotions in the reader. Opening with Zeak, the Forest Boy with the mysterious stone and wood carved figures and you (and Mary, the main character) are left wondering if he was real or imaginary. The story on Cousin Danny reveals painful memories that may make you cry. Catalyst brought forth anger and sadness, a story that I will never forget. Readers will wish they could dive into the pages and help some of the people, especially the children and young adults. The author writes with a style that immediately draws a reader in and keeps you on edge. At times it was a difficult book to read because of the subject matter, but more so how the author took me to the places, homes, woods, roads and inner feelings of the characters. I was no longer just a reader, but a close observer within the walls or rooms listening and watching.

Fascinating view into rural West Virginia

I didn’t know what to expect with this book but I really liked the coming of age stories set in West Virginia. Some of them made me slightly uncomfortable but were fascinating at the same time. Loved how she described these characters so well in such a short story.
