John Bartholomew & Son Ltd. was initially situated in Edinburgh. This is where the firm pioneered landmark achievements such as the first half-inch to one mile Reduced Ordnance Survey Maps of Scotland in 1875 and the Times Survey Atlas of the World in 1922, supplementing the first Times Atlas, which was produced in 1895 with maps by the German firm Velhagen & Klasing. The Bartholomews also produced extensive mapping in support of the military during the Second World War. In 1989, John Bartholomew & Son Ltd became part of the newly formed HarperCollins, and moved to its current location near Glasgow in 1995.

'This atlas, with more than 70 maps in full color, traces the history of the world – and of map making – from Babylon to the recent past.
The maps are not new creations used to illustrate historical events, but rather examples of maps used at the time, so that the reader sees places or events as the people of the times depicted them, within the framework of their cultural milieu, geographical knowledge, and skill at making maps, as the accompanying text helps explain. So while some of the earliest maps seem quite crude, and even more recent ones may seem quite inaccurate, the text points out that they are often quite sophisticated, once we understand how to read them. The nature of the maps varies widely, from street plans to the entire world, and may offer just geographical or political content, but often social, military, transportation, and even medical information. A valuable work for any library or history buff, this will be of particular use for those interested in cartography or the graphic presentation of information.'
