Thamel is the main shopping & touristic area in Kathmandu. Many good & small hotels around, tourist shops, restaurants are lined up in this happening area. One can spend a good full day visiting shops, chilling out at restaurants etc...

Are you ready? Are you ready to be drawn into a different world? A world of full of fantasy and frenzy? Fever and fury? Myth and legend? Mayhem and madness? A world where sidewalks, streets, alleyways, and highways blend into one? Where order, reason, and structure, cave into chaos, crowds, and congestion? Where the pace is relentlessly frenetic? Where body and soul dance together under a mist of spiritual smoke. Are you ready to step off the beaten path and dive into the divine?  Are you ready to get lost in a shroud of enigma? Then step right up folks. Welcome to Thamel, Kathmandu.

Thamel today is what Freak Street (Jhochen Tole) was for travelers in the 1960. A great place to meet up with fellow travelers, plan a hiking trek, enjoy quality eats, buy tons of trekking apparel and "northface gear" and have a grand old time. When the trek is over, load up on souvenirs and head home. If you're lucky though, you'll get to stay in Nepal longer.

Thamel has lots of different shops and an amazing place to walk around and look at the different clothes and trinkets available. The only downside is that it can be congested at times and lots of traffic and very dusty. The people are very friendly and inviting, many times offering you into their shops for tea.

Kathmandu has many beautiful sites to offer, so you don't want to stay in Thamel to long. A few days at the beginning or end of your trek should do.

Thamel is like a small Saigon. It's the heart of commodity and diversity in Kathmandu. There are hundreds (almost )of restaurants, cafe, plus souvenir stores that can be found in Thamel. Also majority of budget hotels can be found around the area.
