It's a small little town right off I-80 with shopping and restaurants. There's also an amtrak station located there that stops right in the heart of Truckee. It's about 20 minutes away from North Lake Tahoe and 24 minutes away from the Donner Lake Overlook.

We visited the commercial downtown area. There are many shops including a book store, original artwork and jewelry shops. There are a few restaurants. It was busy, since it was the 4th of July week.
We did not participate in any tours or trips. We came up for the day from Reno. It was similar to the usual tourist shopping districts I have visited all over the country.

Several blocks of shops and restaurants are easily walkable and make for an nice couple of hours shopping and eating. We ate lunch at COMO, the food was good but a bit expensive.
The visitor center folks were very helpful with what to do and where to go. They even gave us a list of hiking trails in the area and in the Tahoe area.
You have to pay to park, but it was only $6 for all day.

I was stuck babysitting my new grand baby and wanted the kids to be able to eat their lunch so I walked all around the town with the stroller. It is a very cute town with lots of kitchen stores, clothing stores for men and women, and great places to eat. I bought candy, baby toys, t-shirts, souvenirs, jewelry, etc. I also love to day drink at Bar of America or the wine bar upstairs.

It's a charming little town and this is the best part. Otherwise Truckee is suburban California, but here it's a cool old west old town with nice sidewalks, some shopping, the train station, the tourist info center, and lots of food, mostly casual. Always a lot of people around.

Very quaint downtown with some interesting shops and dining stops. We were there MLK weekend and it was incredibly crowded, and it doesn't take too many people before the small town is overrun. Quite picturesque when covered in snow and definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

1-2 hour visit is plenty. There are little shops and restaurants to stop in along this stretch of a few blocks. Paid parking on streets and in lots (no free parking). It's a nice place to stop and stretch your legs.

The main street is so pretty and picturesque, it is really worth stopping and having a walk about. The town is small, so it does not take too much of your time, if you schedule a lunch even better. I would not necessarily say you have to stay in Truckee to enjoy it, but an overnight stay would probably be enjoyable too. The town itself is much nicer than South Lake Tahoe (but not being close to the lake has its downside).

Great town. Glad we took the shuttle from Palisades Tahoe Ski area to visit. Plenty of shops, places to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Enjoyed our conversation with the gentleman in the Truckee Museum, next to the Welcome Center. Interesting history here. Loved seeing the trains too.

Hi,
I'm not sure how the fishing is, as I did not go fishing. However, there is a large lake, Donner Lake...so, maybe. Good Luck. I thought the area was really beautiful.
