- Jemille WilliamsAtlanta, Georgia346 contributionsLike a mini-trip to France and Russia right in DCWhat a wonderful respite from reality to stroll through this amazing house and beautiful gardens. Marjorie Merriweather Post wasn't just a wealthy woman. She took her role in the Post Cereal company very seriously after her husband died. She introduced new products like BirdsEye frozen foods that brought in billions. She was an avid collector of French treasures, but after serving in Russia with her Ambassador husband, she also became interested in Russian treasures. She raised a lot of money for various charities that make the world a better place. We loved seeing how she lived both inside her house and out in her many garden areas.Visited June 2023Written June 27, 2023
- sdWashington DC, District of Columbia38 contributionsAmazing time capsuleMy wife and I often bring friends or family from out of town. The grounds are beautiful, especially when in bloom. The museum itself is truly amazing. I highly recommend doing the guided tour. Without it you really can’t appreciate what you are seeing. Even then there is too much to learn. It’s also nice that while there certainly are people there, it’s not crowded.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 7, 2023
- 553celgChelmsford, United Kingdom119 contributionsStunning house and grounds with amazing collectionStunning collection of glass, Faberge eggs, paintings, china, all gloriously displayed in a beautiful Georgian styled house. The grounds are impeccably maintained and laid out in garden “rooms”. The docents were very well informed and there was plenty of opportunity to get another look at anything. Faberge eggs, Romanov paintings, jewels, chandeliers, artwork, a very classy museum. They had a special glass exhibit that was beautiful.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 2, 2023

- Maggi713Baltimore, Maryland12,350 contributionsChristmas Decorations and More! How fortunate are we that Marjorie Merriweather Post had the foresight to leave her home and all of its belongings for us to enjoy. Mrs. Post was an astute business woman, socialite, philanthropist, and avid collector of decorative arts. She was one of the richest women in America during her lifetime. She was the sole heir to the Post Cereal Company, which later became General Foods. Make sure you take the time to watch the movie in the theater and the TV monitor on the second floor of the Visitor’s Center to learn about Mrs. Post. We always make the trip from Baltimore at Christmas time to see the home decorated for the holidays. They really know how to make the season come to life. We were not disappointed this year. Each room sparkled from the Entry Hall to the French Drawing Room on the first floor and all the rooms on the second floor. It is like stepping back to a more elegant time. Each room has a story to tell. Until the mansion closes on January 14, you can see the current exhibition called “Glass: Art. Beauty. Design.”Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 4, 2024

It was lovely and admission included a tour of the main house and gardens. - Diane SFairfax Station, Virginia183 contributionsA true gemThe lovely house and grounds have an amazing collection of beautiful things--furniture, porcelain, art, and so much more. The gardens are worthwhile even in winter, and there are greenhouses for those who don't want to brave the elements. Christmas is a great time to visit for the added benefit of the decorations.Visited December 2023Traveled with friendsWritten January 30, 2024
- luv4phoodMarietta, Georgia809 contributionsLovely gardens and homeAfter recently reading a book about Marjorie Post, I was eager to visit her home and garden at Hillwood. Although the book mentioned her love for collecting fine things, it could not adequately describe the number of items that one can view a the museum. We were surprised to learn that bringing outside food was permitted. We observed several families enjoying picnics on the grounds. Plan on spending the day. There is lots to enjoy both inside and outside the home.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten February 2, 2024
- Erin H97 contributionsWashington's Coveted Gem of a MuseumThis is one of the best kept secrets in Washington DC. I have heard that this Museum boasts the largest collection of Russian art outside of Russia. It is located within a house of the heiress Merryweather Post, the heris to cereal fortune. I think the story goes that she was married to a diplomat or something who was in Russia as was she during the revolution of 1917, and to preserve much of the art she bought it and brought it all to her home. The home is preserved just as it would have been in the 1950s when I believe she passed away. It is a stately mansion with a number of outhouses, a greenhouse, and amazing Gardens and even one of the best gift shops in DC. You can take a picnic lunch and eat on the ground or take a lunch from the on-site catering facility that has lovely food and a nice atmosphere in which to eat it. I went to the museum about a year ago with my toddler who was either a two or three year old. Let's just say that the house is not accessible so strollers cannot be brought in to the house / Museum. Of course she could walk all over the museum, but in order to preserve the mansion, they haven't really made any modifications to facilitate wheelchairs or strollers, and everything is pretty much out in the open. At the time I went, I had to close friend visiting from Britain, and he tried to hold my daughter on his shoulders the entire time we were in the mansion. This is a little stressful for us. So I think it's advisable not to take young kids to this Museum, which is unfortunate. I have to be able to bring my daughter and other visitors to the museum now that she's a little bit older. She loves the grounds, the restaurant, and of course the main attraction itself. You don't have to love Russia, but they used to and to a certain extent, still do produce some of the most amazing art and pottery in the world.Visited March 2023Traveled with familyWritten February 8, 2024

Second visit to Hillwood and it was wonderful. We went the first day that they reopened after closing in January so there were not a lot of people. We had one of our best docents ever, Vee, Who was amazing and very knowledgeable. She really made her visit. We visited years ago and use the self guided audio tour but really got a lot more out of it taking a tour with a docent. We’ve traveled all over the world but this definitely has one of the best art collections we’ve ever seen in a private home including lots of Russian art, Two Faberge eggs, A writing desk which may have belonged to Marie Antoinette, and many paintings. They also have a little café which has very good sandwiches. I really regret is that it was very cold so we weren’t able to enjoy the gardens as much as we would if we went in the spring when everything is in bloom.

Hillwood Estate houses an impressive and beautiful collection of Russian, French, and English objects of art and furniture.
We arrived at opening as walk ins, and spent an hour and a half walking around the beautiful, well maintained grounds and visiting the current Princess Grace dress exhibit. You can make your tour reservation online. After the home tour, we visited the cafe. We didn’t realize we should have made reservations there as well because they were full, but it was no problem because the to-go window was perfect! We spent almost three and a half hours enjoying the estate and resting at lunch.
There is a lot of shade and places to rest. There are elevators as well for those who need it.
Hillwood Estate participates in the Blue Star Museums program which runs through Labor Day. My family and I very much appreciated the complimentary access to the home and grounds.
I had been planning to visit this place for years and don’t know why I waited so long. What a hidden gem! I highly recommend visiting!

You can Google Hillwood for the details on Marjorie Posts unique and wonderful home. Essentially she was a very rich hoarder of Russian and French items and art and Hillwood is the museum she left to the public. Do the informative docent tour for sure. Reservations strongly advised to eat in the cafe. The special exhibition on Dior was more interesting than I thought and the greenhouse orchids are spectacular. I am told the various gardens are beautiful when in bloom.

We had an excellent tour of the indoors at Hillwood, featuring Russian porcelain, and two Faberge eggs. Many interesting stories. I especially liked the small room with an old-fashioned permanent wave machine, which looked like a torture device (and probably was).
I visited in April, and my favorite part was the beautiful gardens in full bloom. Some of the most spectacular grounds I've ever seen, and beautifully maintained. The Japanese Garden surpassed anything I had seen in Japan.

Absolutely wonderful place. I could have easily spent 2 full days here. We spent 75 minutes just admiring all the amazing orchids in the greenhouses. We took the house tour, and it was definitely very informative and orienting. The gardens tour was not offered the day we were there, probably because there was a threat of thunderstorms when it would normally happen. Instead they did a cutting garden tour; the people in our group who were avid home gardeners (everyone by my husband and I) seemed to really get into the discussions of how to plant for ongoing blooms, etc. So many beautiful pieces in the home, and so many beautiful flowers in the greenhouses and gardens that we ran out of time in the five hours we were there. We went to the US Botanic Gardens (next to the Capitol) earlier in our trip, and this was a million times better (and way less crowded). Highly, highly recommend for adults who want to gaze at beautiful things; it would probably bore kids and teens to tears.

This mansion is exquisite, this place has beautiful artifacts inside, from tea set, mirrors, tables, clothing, souvenirs that Mrs. Merryweather collected. The owner would host elegant extravagant parties for her guest. The house outside has waterfalls, beautiful green path that are very relaxing and tranquil. This is beautiful mansion to visit specially in the summer.

Beautiful place, but be SURE to schedule a guided tour, and even do some research before you go! Hillwood is chockablock with fabulous artwork, but there are almost NO labels or text panels on anything -- and scanning the QR code to get info on your phone didn't get us anything useful either. So we really didn't know anything about what we were looking at. The printed map and guide wasn't really helpful, either. They really need to work on visitor services and "interpretation," or whatever it's called these days.

Hillwood is well worth the visit! The house is elegantly furnished and the collections of beautiful objects are amazing. Mrs. Post had a remarkable eye for art. We were able to join a guided tour and the docent was very knowledgeable about Mrs. Post's life and the collections. I would go back again because there was so much to see that I'm sure we missed some things.
We also saw a special exhibit of Grace Kelly's clothing in the Adirondack building when we were there.

We did the garden and house tour. I would recommend them both but you should get there when they open to get into the tours. I also found the tours give you alot of info in a short hour. I noted that you can just donate what you want to pay if you can't afford the fee. Then you can go back after the tours to see what you missed. The grounds are really pretty and don't miss the greenhouses with the orchids. I wasn't impressed by the food so bring food and drinks. Also you can probably tour the grounds without paying a fee. I would like to return in the spring

Any suggestions for large groups? Has anyone had the experience of going with a group 25+ to visit the gardens? Interested in logistics (seating, general capacity/visitation, etc.) more than purchasing tickets. Is there a limit for number of tickets sold a day?

There are limited tickets per day but they handle tours of the grounds and exhibits for groups of 15 or so...

If you don’t want to book online in advance, how do you contribute the donation? Is there a donation box on the way in or out? Can you donate any amount or will you get the side eye for donating less than the recommended?

Since there is a an admission fee, I did not see any problem with not donating, it's up to your discretion.

How easy is it to get here? Can you take public transportation from downtown DC? How much would the cab be approximately?
Gary W

I don’t believe public transportation is available that would get you very close to the estate. We used Lyft from our hotel on Pennsylvania Ave. I believe the cost was about $40 for 3 adults one way. It’s also important for the driver to have directions available on the estate web site as the road splits near the estate and it’s easy to pass it. It’s in a residential area beyond Rock Creek Park about 25 minutes from downtown.

The house is amazing and you can tour it on your own so can see as much or as little of it as you want so I recommend it. The gardens are pretty but the house is the main attraction in my opinion. Also, if you are a member of other public gardens or the AHS, Hillwood has a reciprocal membership.

Sorry, I am not familiar with individual tour companies around D.C. However, I know there are tons of public transit options within the City. You can get there by bus and Metro rail. The address is 4155 Linnean Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20008. The Hillwood Museum website gives both driving directions and options for public transit. Or, look for Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority for transit maps and transit systems.
