The Market

Premarket today, the Dow was indicated to be up +107 points.

Thursday the Dow closed up +331.37 (+0.85%) at 39,387.76.

Year-to-date the Dow is up +4.51%.

Thursday, (25) Dow stocks were up, none made 52-week lows and (2) made 52-week highs.

The Dow stock winners Thursday were led by Home Depot (HD) 347.44 (+2.54%), Caterpillar (CAT) 351.78 (+2.11%) and Goldman Sachs (GS) 455.56 (+1.93%).

The Dow stock losers Thursday were led by Salesforce (CRM) 275.17 (-1.36%), IBM (IBM) 166.27 (-1.17%) and Cisco (CSCO) 47.79 (-0.44%).

The VIX closed Thursday at 12.69 (-2.38%) and the 10 YR at 4.451 (-0.61%). The VIX is currently at 12.80 (+0.87%). The 10YR is at 4.478 (+0.74%).

The Dow added 331.37 points, or 0.85%, on Thursday to mark its seventh positive trading day in a row, the longest winning run since December. It was helped by Home Depot (HD) and Caterpillar (CAT), which both rose more than 2%.

The rise in stocks was helped in part by new jobless claims data released Thursday, which rekindled hope for Federal Reserve rate cuts later this year.

The percentage of individual investors who are neutral — neither bullish nor bearish — about the outlook for stock prices over the coming six months widened to 35.4% from 29% in the latest survey from the American Association of Individual Investors, the highest such reading since last September and above the historical average of 31.5%. Bullishness rose to 40.8% from 38.5%, above the historical average of 37.5% for the 26th time in 27 weeks. Bearish sentiment slumped to 23.8% of those polled, down from 32.5% last week and the historical average of 31%. It was the first time in four weeks that pessimism was below its historical average.

U.S. futures are higher, European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended higher.

The national average price of gasoline is down six-tenths of a cent at $3.636 per gallon.

Initial filings for unemployment benefits hit their highest level since late August 2023 in a potential sign that an otherwise robust labor market is changing. Jobless claims totaled a seasonally adjusted 231,000 for the week ended May 4, up 22,000 from the previous period and higher than an estimate for 214,000, the Labor Department reported Thursday. This has sent yields lower and raised expectations that central bankers might cut interest rates at some point this year.

Disney (DIS) and Warner Bros. Discovery, are teaming up to offer their streaming services in a bundle, the entertainment giants announced on Wednesday evening. The bundle will bring together the companies’ streaming services — Disney+, Hulu and Max — in one package this summer. The offering will be available on the ad-supported and commercial-free tiers.

U.S. futures are mostly higher, European stocks are higher and Asian markets ended mostly higher.

The national average price of gasoline is up two-tenths of a cent at $3.642 per gallon.
