For more than forty years, the books Maurice Sendak has written and illustrated have nurtured children and adults alike and have challenged established ideas about what children's literature is and should be. The New York Times has recognized that Sendak's work “has brought a new dimension to the American children's book and has helped to change how people visualize childhood.” Parenting recently described Sendak as “indisputably, the most revolutionary force in children's books.”

Winner of the 1964 Caldecott Medal for Where the Wild Things Are, in 1970 Sendak became the first American illustrator to receive the international Hans Christian Andersen Award, given in recognition of his entire body of work. In 1983, he received the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award from the American Library Association, also given for his entire body of work.

Beginning in 1952, with A Hole Is to Dig by Ruth Krauss, Sendak's illustrations have enhanced many texts by other writers, including the Little Bear books by Else Holmelund Minarik, children's books by Isaac Bashevis Singer and Randall Jarrell, and The Juniper Tree and Other Tales from Grimm. Dear Mili, Sendak's interpretation of a newly discovered tale by Wilhelm Grimm, was published to extraordinary acclaim in 1988.

In addition to Where the Wild Things Are (1963), Sendak has both written and illustrated

The Nutshell Library (1962), Higglety Pigglety Pop! (1967), In the Night Kitchen (1970), Outside Over There (1981), and, We Are All in the Dumps with Jack and Guy (1993). He also illustrated Swine Lake (1999), authored by James Marshall, Brundibar (2003), by Tony Kushner, Bears (2005), by Ruth Krauss and, Mommy? (2006), his first pop-up book, with paper engineering by Matthew Reinhart and story by Arthur Yorinks.

Since 1980, Sendak has designed the sets and costumes for highly regarded productions of Mozart's The Magic Flute and Idomeneo, Janacek's The Cunning Little Vixen, Prokofiev's

The Love for Three Oranges, Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, and Hans Krása's Brundibár.

In 1997, Sendak received the National Medal of Arts from President Clinton. In 2003 he received the first Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, an international prize for children's literature established by the Swedish government. Maurice Sendak was born in Brooklyn in 1928. He now lives in Connecticut.

This is one of Maurice Sendak's lesser-known books. Jenny, the Sealyham terrier, has everything, so she runs away from home to find adventure. And find it she does! When she gets a job as a nursemaid, she has to make Baby eat. "NO EAT! NO GROW!" says Baby, and Jenny is doomed to be eaten by the lion who lives in the cellar. Instead, she winds up as the leading lady of the World Mother Goose Theater. At every step of her adventure, Jenny eats -- and eats -- and eats.

The illustrations follow the text perfectly, and are placed so that the adult reading the book aloud can finish a page, turn it around to show the child, and then go on.

This was one of my children's favorites, and I recently bought it for my friend's grandson. I know he'll love yelling, along with Baby, "NO EAT! NO GROW! SHOUT!"

This story defined my childhood! I lost this book when I was a very little girl. I didn't remember the title, all I knew was that there was a dog with a love of salami sandwiches. One day this recommendation popped up on Amazon for me. I finally found the book again! This book has all the odd charm you'd expect from a Maurice Sendak book! It's a cute story and is a great read for beginning readers. Cute pictures, funny characters, and a book you won't forget! I absolutely recommend this book to anyone!

This is such a cute and strange tale of a little dog named Jennie who has all that she could possibly wish for, but is unsatisfied with her life as is so she searches for more. The dream-like journey brings her to some odd characters and situations, but at the end she finds the happiness she never could have imagined. My 4.5 year old loves any Maurice Sendak story, no matter how unusual, and this one makes him smile and laugh at Jennie and her adventures.

A little dog with no love for her owner, only ambition and no talent just happens to be found special by others for no reason other than being what it is. All while she is rather obnoxious and never stops trampling over the lives of everybody around her. I don't know if Sendak meant this as a metaphor for what the US means to the rest of the world, but I really can't see this as the children's book it's supposed to be. I knew ever since I saw the guy in an interview that he had written about something way beyond what you get on a superficial read. It is nonetheless fascinating and the illustrations just make it amazing. Not a good message for kids though, unless you want to teach them that they are destined to greatness without any of the hard work that's supposed to come with it.

Wonderful quick service on a perfect little book. Exactly as described if not better. I couldn’t ask for more on this transaction. A hard to find first edition in as new condition. Thank you!

When I read an article in my local newspaper raving about this book, I was surprised I had never read it. So I ordered it. It's okay, but not nearly as good as memorable or good as "Where the Wild Things Are" or the four Nutshell library books. It did not hold the attention of the two children I read it to (6 & 8). Perhaps it is intended for a younger audience, but a really good children's book appeals to all ages. The illustrations are classic Sendak, but again nothing memorable. The story line is improbable and although it starts out with a great lead, it peters out, and the ending is neither satisfying nor amusing.

A fun little read for you and the young ones. A story about needing to go on our own personal journeys to find what we each need/want. Told from the perspective of a pet dog that leaves home to find some excitement, it's a charming and well-illustrated tale with a happy ending.

Really happy with the purchase. A tad expensive for the original price in UK, but it's not available anywhere else in India, so I'm ok with the minor increase in price. Quality is good and received it without any damage.

A lovely lovely story about a funny little characterful dog discontented with his lot. He goes off in search of adventure ... We can all identify with that little dog I think. And I love Maurice Sendak. His books are simple and profound; not just for kids! And what a great picture on the cover!

5.0 out of 5 stars Phantasien um Mother Goose
Reviewed in Germany on November 4, 2014
