Explosions heard as wildfire spreads to salvage yard in Hibbing
A Red Flag warning is currently in effect in the area.
Firefighters are working to contain a large fire in Hibbing on Tuesday afternoon.
The Hibbing Fire Department around 3:30 p.m. said its fire crews and multiple other agencies are at the scene of a salvage yard fire near the Mitchell Bridge.
The fire department shared a post from Friends of the Northland FireWire, which reported the wildland fire began around 1 p.m. and quickly spread to the salvage yard due to dry conditions and gusty winds.
According to the company's post, several explosions were heard and thick black smoke was sent into the air as tire piles caught fire.
At one point, the fire threatened the Sunny Hill Distributors warehouse and the response caused a lane closure on Highway 169.
