Video: Herm Edwards Rants About ESPN's Dallas Cowboys Coverage - Athlon Sports Skip to main content

Fans of other teams have long accused ESPN of favoring, or at least prioritizing, the Dallas Cowboys when it comes to their NFL coverage.

Any time "America's Team" loses a game or makes a personnel move, it seems to get more attention on the network than if the same thing happened to just about any other franchise, despite the fact that the Cowboys haven't played in a Super Bowl since the 1995 season.

Now, one of ESPN's own employees has joined in the criticism.

Herm Edwards, who is back on the air with ESPN after spending four-and-a-half seasons as the head coach at Arizona State, went on a fiery rant during a Tuesday segment discussing the top teams for the 2023 season. Edwards was incensed that the network expanded its discussion to the top six teams in its power rankings rather than the top five, which he said was because the Cowboys came in at No. 6.

"The question I have is this: We went all the way from one, not to five, but to six," Edwards said. "Why? Because there's the Cowboys. We just have to talk about the Cowboys. They couldn't make the top five, but they got to six, and now we're going to talk about the top six teams. Are you kidding me? Really? It's always about the Cowboys. We have to talk about these guys all the time."

That noise you hear might be fans from the other 31 NFL teams saying "amen."

While the Cowboys have certainly been competitive across the past two seasons, going 12-5 two years in a row, they haven't really threatened to make the Super Bowl. This year, they lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round, 19-12.

After Edwards' rant, fellow analyst Keyshawn Johnson took the mic. He tried to steer the conversation back to the power rankings and explained why he would drop the 49ers, who are dealing with uncertainty at quarterback as both Brock Purdy and Trey Lance recover from injuries.

But Edwards noted that, if Johnson removed one team from the top five, he'd have to move someone else in. When Johnson said he would slide the Cowboys to No. 5, Edwards lost it.

"Stop it!" Edwards yelled as he started to leave his seat. "I'm done."
