I saw the Open day advertised on Facebook and was intrigued, as I'd never heard of the castle despite growing up 4 miles away! It's a mediaeval castle which is part of a large estate and it's only open to the public a few times a year. Unfortunately this means it's very popular.

The park is lovely as are the views.
After paying a small entrance fee which was going to charity we climbed the hill to the base of the castle's remaining tower. However there was a long slow-moving tightly packed queue up the stairs to get into the tower. We sat down for half an hour but the queue got no smaller. We reckoned we'd be in the queue for an hour and with Covid infection rates being so high we didn't feel it was worth it. Although the waiting was outside, the queue was tightly packed and no one was wearing masks. We'd already walked round the top of the hill and seen the view so decided to leave. So just be aware if you want to see inside the tower you may be in for a long wait.

We'd had a lovely Sunday lunch at the Glynne Arms just before this.

After following our SatNav to find the castle we parked down the hill and walked back into the village.
No signage for the castle but assumed it was through the large gates.
After walking half a mile a dog walker indicated the castle was around the corner but it was fenced off.
Could only see a portion of the ruin as Heras fencing stopped you getting very close.
Later found out it had been the home of William Ewart Gladstone the former Prime Minister who had several terms in office from 1868.

Absolutely brilliant setting but run very poorly. The singer that was booked was excellent but was told to finish 8.45 to loud. Then some of the young lads were accused of taking drugs in the toilet which was not true, so tried to close the bar at 11.15. The security were very good but told false information by the management team. Its such a shame because a great setting for a wedding. But me personally would not book this venue because of the managements attitude on people.

We checked online - official website and at the Estate office... and it was closed on 9th August 2020. We of course didn’t know and there was no signs to suggest it. Walked around park trying to get in. Went to Farm Shop, asked member of staff and she told us it have been cancelled. Which is fair enough with a situation right now in a world but. How about updating official website? How about removing a note from Estate office window about official opening days? How about letting people know??? Disappointing.

The only plus is a wildlife around cafe grounds... 😆

Went on one of their rare open days and a farmers market event.
The first problem was trying to find the right entrance having been directed by a volunteer to the wrong place! Eventually found a parking space and embarked on a muddy but well sign-posted and supported walk around the estate.
Walked up the small hill to the tower where there were well control queues to get in.
A friendly volunteer gave us a brief history of the castle whilst we waited in small groups of 10-12. The steep spiral staircase led to the fantastic view point of the "new" castle, from the top.
Once down, we walked knee deep in daffodils around the beautiful gardens in bright sunshine and sucked up the sights, sounds and smells of Spring.
At the markets there were a variety of stalls selling local produce and food which smelled amazing, especially the wild garlic sausage, although at £5 for a couple on a bun it was a bit steep (like the steps and hills!!). The coffee at £2.50 was bitter, weak and admittedly most was thrown away, a real disappointment!
The high point was that most of the volunteers were chatty and informative and we met a young man from the family who lived in the new castle who was most engaging! Overall, a lovely afternoon.

This is an annual event in the grounds of Hawarden Castle which was advertised as pointing you in the right direction to achieve happiness and to become happier every day. The website for the event showed a wide range of exciting craft activities that promised an exciting day out. My friend and I were a bit startled when we booked tickets for the Saturday events as we were charged £80.10 each plus £15 for parking. The reality of the day turned out to be appallingly disappointing. The fee admitted us to a huge field in front of the castle and we were the only people we saw who had paid for parking. Many of the craftspeople were keen amateurs who didn’t hesitate to charge from £15 to £30 to take part in their workshops in tents and teepees. If we’d been tempted to join a few of these activities the day would have cost the best part of £200. There wasn’t anywhere apart from hay bales and the ground to sit down to eat or rest. The food tents needed to be closer together with proper seating. In several places there were large smokey fires that paid no notice to the needs of asthmatics and others with diseases of the lungs. We stayed two hours and left feeling very sore and well and truly fleeced. To add insult to injury there wasn’t a notice to show the way out of the enormous parking site and there wasn’t anyone there to ask!!! The only people who were made really happy by TGLE2019 were the organisers.

Well worth a visit on one of its open days. Lovely location and the estate staff were informative. It’s only small but the entrance fee is nominal. Thanks
