Discussion

Of course we all know the characters are 11-17 during the Hogwarts years. But I feel people forget how young that actually is.

I see characters getting bashed for stupid stuff they said or did at age 13.

Or I see characters written as if they have he maturity of a grown up at age 11.

I have the theory this is because a large portion of us grew up with the characters. We were kids and the characters were kids, so we viewed them as equal, and now we are growns up, but the characters are still kids, and we judge them as our equals.

I don't know, maybe is just my perception. Thoughts?

Milkman AU????? (dw Ik this is confusing at first sight, hear me out) Milkman AU????? (dw Ik this is confusing at first sight, hear me out)
Prompt

I just came across the fluffiest AU on TikTok, but it was a video from like 3 years ago (yea I’m not really up to date with things like this), credits to @Nothingeverlost on TikTok for making me wanna talk about this.

So apparently, you know Colin Creevey? If you’re not a book reader, he first appeared as the bubbly 1st year Gryffindor in Chamber of Secrets that would always take photos and adored Harry. His father worked as a milkman, and I don’t really know how to explain it but the milkman could be him and Dennis’ father (that worked rounds in Privet Drive), stole baby Harry away from the Dursleys knowing how AWFUL they could be, felt bad for the boy and debated with his wife (again this is not my idea, I’m just pretty excited right now that I’ve just found out about this) and they eventually take baby Harry in, say a year later they might get pregnant with Colin and such, and they grow up together and Harry has a happy childhood, weird things happen and then the letters come in. The Creeveys being muggles, of course have no clue what’s going on (and it might not be the milkman in Harry’s neighborhood but it’s a cute idea) and then so it happens, all three of their children end up being wizards and go to Hogwarts. Knowing the end of the HP series and what happens to Colin in Deathly Hallows, just makes it seem even more heartbreaking. I just think this is the CUTEST FREAKING thing I’ve ever discovered. Any thoughts about it???

Discussion

If the statute was lifted, there was neither a war nor a genocide, and the muggle world discovered that cures for most common diseases exist, that there are potions which can make you more beautiful or lucky they would obviously want these things too, right? Well, creating them by hand at those scales is unfeasible, so an assembly line or industrial brewery is invented, which just needs the ingredients - and there's the problem.

In order to brew a cure to the common cold for every human being alive, unfathomable amounts of ingredients are required. Those ingredients, if they are derived from magical plants or animals, are understandably limited and kept carefully in balance.

However, as we can see from things like the amazon rainforest, large corporations are mostly unconcerned about the long-term effects of their activities if it means they make a lot of money more quickly.

I.e. I think it would be an overstatement to assume that Dittany, the Demiguise, the Boomslang and similar rare magical flora and fauna would survive a year of companies like Nestlé getting their hands on their natural habitats. And sure, these plants and animals could be farmed responsibly, but so could bananas, pigs and chicken.

And that's just the economical angle. Imagine if the CIA got its hands on the Imperious curse.

Marauder era time travel fic? Marauder era time travel fic?
Find That Fic

Basically Voldemort won so the remainder of the resistance comprising Harry, Hermione, Luna, Draco, ginny and Neville travel back in time to the marauder era to set things right. They end up landing in the great hall at Hogwarts during a feast and explain things that happened including the torture and murder of the Malfoys for a minor failure. Harry warns his parents as does Neville. Luna spends time with her mum, warning her about the experiment and how to fix it. Ginny gets to meet her parents and baby bill and charlie who get notified by Fawks. It basically goes and turns into a full blown push from those in Hogwarts to bring down Voldemort before he can cause the nuclear war that wipes out everyone.

Lily made a Horcrux and Bellatrix turns sort of good? Lily made a Horcrux and Bellatrix turns sort of good?
Find That Fic

Trying to find a fic that started with Lily having somewhat survived the attack at godric's hallow by making a horcrux and possessing Nagini. Bellatrix finds her and decided that following Lilly who was more powerful than Voldemort was a good idea. Lilly ends up possessing Petunia and raising Harry while Bellatrix ends up with a lot of tatoos and piercings and pretends to be "Lily Potter" based upon rumours spread by Petunia. Bellatrix's daughter Delphini is born a lot sonner than in cannon, being roughly the same age as Harry. At one point Delphini drops some jewelry in the sewer by accident so Harry and a snake go down there to retrieve it but comes out covered in sewage while holding the jewelry. Bellatrix is angry that Harry got so dirty so soon after a bath and at Delphini for taking the jewelry from the makeup box without permission.

Harry is a genius in ONE field of magic Harry is a genius in ONE field of magic
Request

After reading basically everything there is to read in the fandom, hyper-competent-super!Harry starts to get pretty boring. It doesn't help that he's usually a Slytherin in all these fanfics, usually adopting the ideology of Voldemort and blood purists.

What I would like are recommendations where Harry is a genius, or quite proficient, in a single field of magic, at the cost of being pretty bad or mediocre on others subjects, whether by his choice or not. Basically a Savant!Harry. For example:

Space Magic

From a young age, Harry can twist and distort space itself as he pleases, distances is merely a concept to be ignored. His first accidental magic? He returned to Lily's arms when she was on the other side of the house. The whole house looked like a pretzel. The floor was on the ceiling and the ceiling was on the floor. (Quite similar to Vista from Worm, if you know what I mean). Unfortunately, he could't perform a single transfiguration even if his life depended on it... Potions? He's worse than Neville at it.

Illusions

Harry is so good at manipulating people's minds, bringing out their worst fears, putting them in states of euphoria and terror so potent that his enemies own heads are no longer a safe place. On the non-combatant side, this skill is quite useful in making storytime engaging and fun; he can also convey a wide range of information in a split second, that is, if others can withstand the mental strain of it. It's not exactly Legilimency, but it works more or less under the same parameters. An Uchiha or a genjutsu master of sorts. The cost of this? He can only make normal spells work at their most basic level. Forget powerful spells like Patronus or Reducto, he had a hard time learning a simple Lumos!

PS: Bonus points if it's not a Gray/Dark/Indy!Harry or Slytherin fic, or, if possible, he doesn't concoct with Slytherins.

Edit: spelling. English is not my first language, my bad!

Anyone know any fics that actually subvert the "Harry is related to some famous wizard" trope? Anyone know any fics that actually subvert the "Harry is related to some famous wizard" trope?
Discussion

I've read so many "Lord Harry James All-The-Lordships" fics that I've grown desperate to see if anyone has taken the concept and subverted it. As in, Harry goes to Gringotts, finds out he's related to someone like Gryffindor, but that it's actually meaningless and does precisely nothing for him. If anyone knows any fics like that, let me know, please.

Harry : "So, I'm the Heir of Gryffindor?"

Griphook : "Oh sure, along with like several hundred other people."

Harry : "WHAT?!"

Griphook : "Use some sense, boy! The Founders of Hogwarts lived a thousand years ago. By now, generations of their descendants will have intermarried with most of the population. Almost all of Wizarding Britain can claim descent from at least one of them."

Harry : "So no special inheritance or anything?"

Griphook: "Of course not! Anything he had has long since been claimed"

Harry : "Aww man... I was hoping to get a cool title, or a seat on the Wizengamot or something."

Griphook : "Foolish child, where on earth would you get such an idea? Wizarding Britain doesn't even have Titled Nobility, even if some arrogant pureblood fools think they ought to be treated like it. As for seats on the Wizengamot? Neither the Ministry or the Wizengamot even existed in the Founders time. Even if it did, it's not the Wizengamot is some magical version of the muggle House of Lords. Why in Merlin's name would they have seats on it?"

Harry : "So, do I get anything at all?"

Griphook : "Well... You get a neat bit of trivia to tell your children someday, I suppose."

Petunia Dursley stared deeply into her cup of tea on a sunny morning during spring. Everything should have been perfect. Dudley got a passing grade, Vernon had the week off, Petunia heard some juicy new gossip and the boy was away on his first year at that freakish magic school.

Everything should have been fine, but she had a stange itch in the back of her mind.

"Vernon?" She called out.

"Yes, dear?" He replied, not glancing up from his mewspaper.

"Don't you find it strange that we could never get rid of the boy?"

Mentioning him finally made her husband look up. "What do you mean?" He asked with a furrowed brow.

"Do you remember that time, when he cried for a week straight after we found him on our doorstep, we decided that we'll give him up for adoption to finally get rid of him?"

"...yes? But the process would have been too long to set up, Petunia."

"What about that time when we 'accidentally' left him out at the woods during our hiking era?" She asked again, not wanting to think about that month long period too much.

"We went ahead, but then Dudley got so thirsty, that we had to...turn back...and we found him..." Her husband trailed off, his eyes slowly widening. "Do you think...?"

"That there's some freakishness whenever we want him gone? Yes, I believe so." She said, while placing her cup on the table.

"So we'll always be saddled with him?" Vernon asked with a frown.

"No, I don't think so. He had gone on roadtrips during school without any problem... I think the bad intentions are the problem." She finished with a furrowed brow.

"So if we want to have peace...we have to be supportive of him?" He asked in a tone, that clearly showed how little he liked the idea.

"Well...we could always send him to summer camps that are free during the holidays. And he will be gone at his school for the rest of the year..."

"Yes that could work." Petunia could see, that Vernonwas already thinking of the possible camps for the boy.

.....

"You'd be grateful, boy. Vernon and me signed you up for a boyscout program during June. After that, you'll join a dance club/camp where you'll learn how to waltz. After that you'll be joining the 'Animal identifying camp' then after that the 'Mythical animals and objects' get together - that should take at least a weekend. After that..."

Harry didn't know what have gotten into his relatives, but if it meant that he had to spend less time with them, then he was happy!

....

The power he knows not? Yeah, that just a 'supportive' family.

A fic idea, in which Harry spends his summer i different camps and such, all the while learning stuff that will help him during his years to come.

I never think Snape is trying to expell Harry from Hogwarts I never think Snape is trying to expell Harry from Hogwarts
Discussion

I reread the CoS recently and unlike the film, Snape appears genuinely happy when he reprimands Harry and Ron for their antics and take pleasure from the idea of expelling them, then his face just look as of "Christmas is cancelled" when Dumbledore calls for help.

But then, after some considerations and after reading the fandom page, I realise that unlike many theories, Snape never intends to expell Harry and Ron. The truth is that he even calls the headmaster to handle this mess and fully knowing that they'll never be expelled as long as Dumbledore is here, he can never protect Harry if he's can never step foot into Hogwarts after all.

Therefore, the reason why he looks so gleeful while mocking Harry and Ron is that he simply likes terrorising children and hates how Dumbledore being so kind to them despite how they crash into the Whomping Willow. He already knows Dumbledore will keep them at school, but he just hate the fact that Dumbledore acts so nice to them instead of making any attempts to scold them. And then he decides to pull up all his discontent starting by allowing the Slytherin Quidditch team to book the Quidditch arena precisely at the same time when the Gryffindors are training, and proceeds terrorising Harry by telling Malfoy to conjure up a snake charm, because we all know he's an immature prick of a teacher.

If I remember correctly, they studied battle strategies and used Roman tactics with conjured (or transfigured) shields and formations to battle Death Eaters in Hogsmeade. They easily defeated them, leaving Albus, his Order, Amelia Bones, and the Aurors dumbfounded by the teenagers' superior combat skills, surpassing even those of seasoned Aurors and Order members.

Other recommendations for badass Dumbledore's Army fics are also welcome. :)

Peter's regrets about the hand he played in James & Lily's death Peter's regrets about the hand he played in James & Lily's death
Find That Fic

It was inspired by the story The Train to Nowhere by MayMarlow, where Peter is actually from the canon universe. Due to his hand in the Potters' death, he's cursed to go through other timelines and kill James & Lily.

The story was about Peter and how he regrets betraying James & Lily I think. The author seems to have taken it down, or I've misremembered and I'm searching for it on the wrong account. I have also tried checking the "works inspired by this one" section on the original fic but it's also not there. (Have also asked author but she didn't answer)

Does anyone know which fanfic I'm talking about/have a copy? I've tried all the fanfic backup options (Fichub, Memento Archive, and Wayback Machine), but I can't find it anywhere.

At what point during PoA does Sirius likely discover that Remus is teaching at the school? At what point during PoA does Sirius likely discover that Remus is teaching at the school?
Discussion

I've been scrunitising PoA heavily for an AU fic I'm writing, and this issue has been bothering me for some time now.

When Sirius and Remus meet in the Shrieking Shack, Sirius does not appear surprised to see Remus, indicating that he was already aware of his presence within Hogwarts. However, when Snape is mentioned a little while later in the same scene, Sirius asks what Snape has to do with anything, and Remus has to inform him that Snape is also a professor at the school. Both Remus and Snape are teachers who likely walk the same corridors (yes, Snape's probably in the dungeons a lot, but he obviously does emerge into the school and grounds too!). How is it that Sirius would have been aware of one being at the school but not the other?

Also, if Sirius was aware from an early point in the school year that Remus was teaching at the school, then would he not be hugely concerned in the wake of his failed attacks that Remus would out him to Dumbledore as an Animagus and kill his entire disguise? Remus admits during the Shrieking Shack that he'd been struggling with guilt all year but had ultimately been too cowardly to tell Dumbledore the truth... but Sirius doesn't know this. He hasn't seen Remus in 12 years, and prior to that, he mistakenly believed him to be a spy for Voldemort and therefore untrustworthy. He hardly knows the adult Remus, and Remus doesn't exactly owe him loyalty based on their schooltime friendship. I really question why Sirius would risk sticking around the grounds if he knew that Remus was there, especially in the wake of two break-in attempts, one of which resulted in the injury of a portrait and the second of which looked like the attempted stabbing of a student.

As such, the only reasonable explanation seems to be that Sirius only discovers Remus' presence at the school after his second failed break-in (the one where Ron wakes up, sees him and screams), realises that he hasn't outed him DESPITE the two break-in, and assumes that his secret is safe with Remus. But that also seems weird, because by that point, Sirius would have been in the forest for months. How would he never have seen Remus before that point? It's especially hard to believe because Sirius says that he'd been coming to watch the Quidditch, and there was a Quidditch match the very day of the attack in which Harry (the person Sirius was there to watch) has a conversation with Remus directly after the match while they're still on the Quidditch pitch!

I read a fic that was Sirius' POV of the whole of PoA that explained away a lot of these issues with the umbrella of Wolfstar. And that's all fine and dandy, but my fic isn't Wolfstar. So I'm really trying to find a non-Wolfstar explanation that solves these issues.

Curious to know people's thoughts on this. Feel free to simply comment that I'm massively overthinking (because I might well be).

English vs Scottish accent English vs Scottish accent
Writing Help

Brit question. Do y'all have as much difficulty understanding the Scottish accent when they go all Merida from Brave on ya, or is it just me?

Tbh, I had this mental image of Voldemort getting a field report from one of his DEs, but the man has got the THICKEST accent imaginable. To counter this, Voldemort has to filter the message through progressively less-brogue-ish minions until he's able to understand it only for the inevitable chaos from playing "Scottish Telephone."

Voldemort did not know how it happened, one moment he stood over his prophesied downfall ready to deliver the killing blow, and the next he was trapped in the body of said toddler. He couldn't speak, couldn't move, only listen. Listen how the boy he now possessed would be famous, revered... loved. What I need:

Well written fics - it can be crack/serious but I need a well constructed plot

E.g.: Dead Man Walking; Oh God Not Again; A Marauders Plan; Innocent Series; unsphere the stars; Backwards with Purpose I & II; Blood and Gold; Brumous; anything by Floreatcastellum

What I would love:

• Magic explained - new or existing

• Well-built world

• Complete stories - ending shouldn't be unsatisfactory or feel like there are loose ends - I don't hate WIPs but some take a tremendous amount of time to update so I'd really rather not

• Pranks/ humorous moments

• Sticking to original accents and dialogues - I prefer Ron saying "Bloody hell you're a git" a lot more than "Holy shit you're an asshole"

What I really don't want:

• Abandoned Stories

• Slash/ Harem

Tropes I love:

• Sirius raising Harry (as a kid/any time post PoA) - I don't want him to die

• Sirius loves Harry more than anything

• Memories of Lily and James

• Sirius as a teacher

• Harry being focused on studying - similar to how he is in A Marauder's Plan - clever/OP Harry is nice but should still have some struggles

• If book is during OoTP: someone putting Molly in her place after the Azkaban comment - and making her back off after that too.

• More prominent roles for: McGonagall, Flitwick, Remus, etc.

• Draco is a friend

• New person helping out Harry - e.g.: Regulus in Dead Man Walking

• Harry as Lord Potter/ Lord Potter-Black

• Harry understands his heritage

• Sirius takes over Wizengamot

• Time travel fics

• Happily Ever Afters

• Manipulative but well-meaning Dumbledore

• More of the Weasley twins - in a good way

Tropes I don't want:

• Evil Dumbledore

• Love-potioning Molly Weasley

• Harry gets an idgaf attitude because he's angry - such as in Apex on ffn

• Sirius/ Vernon/ anyone hitting Harry - whether he's 5 or 15
