BETHALTO, Illinois (CNN) -- An F/A-18 jet crashed Wednesday into a residential neighborhood of this small border town near the Mississippi River.

The Madison County Sheriff's Department said one house was struck and destroyed. There is no word on any possible casualties. Officials said the only person on board the plane was the test pilot.

The crash happened in the heavily populated Rosewood Heights subdivision, the dispatcher said. There were reports of a power blackout caused by the crash.

The F/A-18 is manufactured by McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis. Bethalto is 25 miles northeast of St. Louis.

Pentagon sources say the plane was an older F/A-18 "C" model that once belonged to the Navy, but was leased back to McDonnell Douglas.
