Review

“The largest, most up-to-date, and most useful crossword dictionary available.” — from the Introduction by Will Shortz, New York Times Crossword Editor

“This book is. . .a dozen or more of your favorite references all rolled into one. Besides the most comprehensive list of synonyms I’ve ever seen, there are famous names, TV shows, movies, drama, music--nary a stone unturned. A must for the crossword aficionado.” — Rich Norris, Los Angeles Times crossword editor

“Surely the most comprehensive crossword clue-and-answer resource ever compiled, a cornucopia of cruciverbal lore from two savvy veterans of the crossword trade. We especially love the generous servings of popular-culture knowledge.” — Emily Cox and Henry Rathvon, Boston Globe and Atlantic Monthly crossword creators

“Quite simply the most comprehensive and painstakingly researched crossword dictionary I’ve ever seen -- and I’ve seem them ALL. American crossword puzzles have evolved enormously over the past 40 years, yet most crossword dictionaries have remained mired in the past. Finally, here’s a crossword dictionary for today’s crossword fan. Long overdue but well worth the wait, this is the only crossword dictionary you’ll ever need.” — Merl Reagle, San Francisco Chronicle crossword creator

“Newman and Stark. . .know what should (and shouldn’t) be in a 21st-century crossword dictionary. . . .This is the book you want. ” — Fred Piscop, Washington Post Magazine crossword editor

“You’ll find 40 entries here under ‘comprehensive.’ I’d say that pretty well sums it up.” — Mike Shenk, Wall Street Journal crossword editor

A boon to solvers of crossword puzzles. You can even find names of pain relievers and rental cars! — Word Ways: The Journal of Recreational Linguistics

“[An] excellent resource.” — Library Journal

“[The authors] have indeed delivered a boon, a gift, a windfall to crossword lovers with this long-overdue solving aid.” — US Airways Attaché Magazine

From the Inside Flap

With more than 1,000,000 answers, this volume contains more than twice as many answers as any other crossword dictionary. More important, it is the first crossword dictionary ever to comprehensively cover the clues and answers that actually appear in today's most popular crosswords, including contemporary slang, phrases, and brand names.

Meticulously compiled by two crossword professionals with a combined thirty years in the field, and based on a massive analysis of current crosswords, there has never been a crossword dictionary with the breadth, depth, and currency of this one. This review is for the The Million Word Crossword Dictionary [Kindle Edition], Published November 9, 2010, ASIN: B003VIWO0W,as used with the Kindle 3G, Free 3G + Wi-Fi, 3G, Graphite, 6" Display with New E Ink Pearl Technology being sold as of July 23, 2011. I am specific about the version of the Kindle and dictionary because I believe reviews posted prior to the publication date are not applicable to this combination of dictionary and Kindel.

This combination of dictionary and Kindel works exactly as you would want it to. It searches only on the clues/headings whereas earlier ones also searched through the possible answers. Possible matches for the clue you are typing in are displayed as you type. Sometimes you can save some typing and just cursor up to the clue you want.

July 22, 2011 I went into a competitor store and tried their competing hardware and applicable version of this same dictionary and was unable to complete a search for a word of only four letters. After two minutes of searching it gave up and went to the screen saver. The clerk told me it was searching all the text in the book.

My wife works with this several hours each day. She has used the hard copy of the dictionary for many years. She says this is quicker and easier. Easier on her crippled hands too. We are blessed to have it.

Love this book for doing crossword puzzles, loaded with words and their meanings.
Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2015
I got this as s gift for someone who loves crossword puzzles. Personally, I don't care for them. I usually get about 4 words in and then get frustrated. A week later, I saw the book and a crossword puzzle book lying on the table and thought, "how much can a dictionary help if you don't know the first few letters?"

First of all, it's not really a dictionary. The words don't have definitions, just a list of related words sorted by length. It's closer to a thesaurus than a dictionary, except that it also has pop culture references, sports players, actors, slang words, and all sorts of phrases you might see in a crossword clue.

Second of all, it helps a LOT. Sometimes you can look up the clues verbatim and see the answer listed. These ones feel kinda like cheating and aren't much fun. Most of the time, though, you have to be a little bit clever in what you look up. Sometimes you'll find the answer on the third word, sometimes on the tenth. Either way, the book gives you clues and ideas to bounce off of.

Solving crossword puzzles without this book is like a trivia contest; you either know it or you don't. Solving them with the book is like a scavenger hunt; you'll keep hunting for clues until you figure it out.

Bottom line: it's not for everyone. Diehard trivia fans will probably see this as a crutch and possibly enjoy crossword puzzles less while using it. For people like me, who weren't huge crossword fans to begin with, this book brings a very welcome change of pace.

My 87-yr-old-mom loves crosswords, and she has been using an old, small paperback crossword dictionary that is on its last leg. So I bought her this nice big one. I was hoping the print would be a little larger, and it weighs a ton, but she LOVES IT. She is so taken by the wealth of information in it that she sits down and "reads it" like a book. This is a great gift for any crossword addict, but do keep in mind that the print is quite small and it is not easy to carry around for a person who walks with a cane or is not physically strong.

I've used this dictionary ever since I first saw it in 2004. I work NY Times Sunday crosswords exclusively, and can't work them without it. I own Merriam Webster's regular dictionary, its biographical dictionary, its one-volume encyclopedia, and its geographical dictionary, and yet this one volume, the MW Crossword Dictionary, just about takes the place of all of them. I would suggest to its authors only that they work on a TWO million, or THREE million word upgrade. The crossword creators are getting slyer and sneakier, and we need ever bigger dictionaries of this type. One area they could improve is the list of Scottish words. Another is in foreign words and phrases. (Will somebody please come out with a Scottish dictionary? Or a dictionary of rivers and mountains? Sorry, where was I.) Where it is super helpful is with movies, books and authors, and personalities; nowhere else comes close. Also it is a big help with rivers and cities near rivers. I wish it were twice as big as it is, though, simply because it is already so very very good it makes me want more of it. If you buy this book, you will still need your Almanacs, your expensive world atlases, your mythology books, and your Stars and Planets; and you will still need all your foreign dictionaries. And you will need your ability to figure out puns and tricky clues that are deliberately misleading -- no dictionary can solve those. You need your brain for that. But if you have to travel, or if you were on a deserted island with just one book to help you, this book, the MW Crossword Dictionary, is the one you will want along with you. One last word -- buy the hardback. You will wear out the paperback.

An excellent crossword puzzle help book; it is a compilation of Crossword definitions that have been taken from other puzzles over the past 10 years.

What I liked...

1.)It features an extensive list of words, abbreviations, acronyms, phrases, and fill in the blanks in phrases and sayings.

2a.)It also gives detailed information on authors (and their books), actors and actresses (listing their movies), sports and sport persons, musicians, movies with stars, directors and music and Oscars; this is, of course, in addition to a huge volume of 'normal' crossword puzzle definition and answers.

2b.)there are foreign countries listed (with notable points of interest) as well as common words found in many foreign languages

3.)Answers to definitions are listed first by word size, e.i. 3, 4, 5, letters etc. and then all these words are listed alphabetically; for example, If you looked up the word 'MEANING' you'd find: 3...aim, use 4...gist, goal, pith 5...drift, heart, and so on.

Minor concerns:

1.)The book is large (1,268 pages) and heavy, making it a significant weight to be toted around. (not unexpected, I guess, for the quantity [and quality as well] of material it holds)

2.)The printing is somewhat small; most of us 'older' folks will need reading glasses to see the offered answers comfortably.

3.)Some shading at the edges of the pages would have be very useful to indicate where each letter of the alphabet started; possibly using different colors may have helped even more.

Conclusion:
I love challenging crossword puzzles; this book has provided the best help for finding most tough clues that I've come across. 5 Stars

As a cryptic crossword devotee, I find this dictionary invaluable. It is well-laid out with all the words listed in order of the number of letters in them. It also contains songs and who sings them and films and who stars in them as well as geographical information - all of which is so useful. It is great having it on my Kindle as the hard copy is so big to carry with you when you're going away.
