Why not appreciate Alexandra's not-yet(!) overperforming voice on this song unlike the already mentioned Mariah-Whitney-Leona class would have done it? I listen and I enjoy, and I do not academically dissect every piece of music I come across. Why doing so on this, or did Alexandra Burke butchered a holy cow by recording this song one more time? Go, read reviews on all other existing 170+ versions then, just to be balanced.
I like Alexandra's version because it touches me with sequences especially qualifying for annoying others. I came to the age of 46 with big music (not necessarily songs) from Goldsmith, Zimmer, Queen, Nightwish and I like those mere minute in Burke's Hallelujah where it takes off to big where other's did not dare to take it before.
The other versions are still around, so go and get yours. I could not find my version of Hallelujah among them until Burke's one.
I'd never heard of this song (I know, shock horror) before it was sung on the x factor. I've heard Jeff Buckley's version scince but much prefer Alexandra's. Soaring tender vocals glide through smoothly as you listen. The lyrics are a bit out there, but Alexandra makes it work with her rich voice, emotive delivery and lovely personality.
she's put her own stamp on the song, nd should congratulated.
