Staff Reporter

D I M A P U R , N OV 1 2 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio Friday, inaugurated the state’s first 200-bed Acute Care Hospital Block (ACHB) at Christian Institute of Health Sciences & Research (CIHSR) and also purportedly, the world’s first to have been completed within a span of 100 days. Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister acknowledged that M/s Glocal Healthcare Systems Private Ltd, Kolkata, had completed construction of the 200-bedded hospital in a record time of five months. He also said construction of the ACHB would not have been possible without the support of his ministerial colleagues, especially the minister in-charge of the health & family welfare (H&FW), and collective efforts of all, besides the supervision conducted by engineering wing and taskforce chairman and NSDMA. Rio also expressed the hope that the facility would prove helpful for people of

the State. He also recalled criticisms levelled against the government for providing the facility at CIHSR and not at a government hospital (made by an opposition leader prior to formation of the current all-party government) as published in the print and social media. Rio clarified that the facility was set up at CIHSR since the state government was in partnership with the society (CIHSR) in a (tripartite agreement with CMC Vellore and Emmanuel

Hospital Association). Rio opined that instead Nagas should be happy that the society (CIHSR) has “come to help us” to provide quality health care services. He said this while recalling how the government decided to enter into a tripartite agreement with CMC Vellore and Emmanuel Hospital Association (EHA) to run the erstwhile Referral Hospital on grounds of not having funds or expertise. He said since the state government was unable

to provide fund for construction of the 200-bedded facility, so it had to look elsewhere. Turning on Covid vaccination, Rio stressed its importance that vaccination was the only prevention and protection from the virus as presently there is no medicine to fight the virus. The chief minister also mentioned that the state government will set a target to achieve 100% vaccination by March 2022. Rio admitted that Nagaland is among

the most backward states in the country and had earned some dubious distinctions which he said “all of us have to overcome”. The chief minister however maintained that people may be poor but not backward and the reason being the unresolved Naga political issue. He also said criticisms against the state for being among the bottom of the table on Covid vaccination was due to rumour mongers who he said were responsible for vaccine hesitancy. On the upcoming Hornbill Festival, the chief minister said only vaccinated tourists will be allowed to visit the state. He also urged upon health workers to administer the second dose of vaccine to tourists on demand, provided the requisite timeline between first and second doses was followed. Deputy chief minister Y Patton, who also spoke on the occasion, conveyed his appreciation to the chief minister and Glocal Healthcare Systems Pvt Ltd for building the facility and hoped that it would be

Panicked nations impose curbs as Europe becomes ‘Covid Epicentre’

NEW DELHI, NOV 12 (AGENCIES): Europe has become the epicentre of the pandemic again, prompting some governments to consider re-imposing unpopular lockdowns in the run-up to Christmas and stirring debate over whether vaccines alone are enough to tame Covid-19, a News18 report stated. The fresh concerns come as successful inoculation campaigns have plateaued ahead of the winter months and flu season. About 65% of the population of the European Economic Area (EEA) which includes the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway - have received two doses, according to EU data, but the pace has slowed in recent months. Ten countries in the 27-member European Union face a Covid situation of “high concern”, the bloc’s diseases agency said on Friday, warning the pandemic was worsening across the continent. Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech (Cont’d on p-8) Republic, Estonia, Greece,

Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland and Slovenia are in the highest category of concern, according to the latest risk assessment by the European Centre for Disease Control. Many countries like the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Latvia, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Russia, Norway and Iceland have imposed lockdowns, tightened restrictions Meanwhile, virologists said that vaccines alone are not the silver bullet to defeat the pandemic in the long term. Several pointed to Israel as an example of good practice: in addition to inoculations, it has reinforced mask wearing and introduced vaccine passports after cases spiked a few months ago. Measures such as spacing, masks and vaccine mandates for indoor venues are essential, said Antonella Viola, professor of immunology at Italy’s University of Padua. “If one of these two things is lacking, we see situations such as we are seeing in many European countries these days.”

10% increase in deaths: The World Health Organization’s report for the week to November 7 showed that Europe, including Russia, was the only region to record a rise in cases, up 7%, while other areas reported declines or stable trends. Similarly, it reported a 10% increase in deaths, while other regions reported declines. Governments and companies are worried the prolonged pandemic will derail a fragile economic recovery, and a slew of countries are taking measures to curb the spread. Booster shots: Most EU countries are deploying extra shots to the elderly and those with weakened immune systems, but expanding vaccination to more of the population should be a priority to avoid steps like lockdown, scientists said. “The real urgency is to widen the pool of vaccinated people as much as possible,” said Carlo Federico Perno, head of microbiology and immunology diagnostics at Rome’s Bambino Gesù Hospital.

Railways to resume normal services NLSF reiterates appeal for setting up govt law college To drop ‘special train’ tag, revert to pre-Covid fares NEW DELHI, NOV 12 (PTI): Under pressure from passengers over hike in fares, the Railways on Friday issued an order to discontinue the ‘special’ tag for mail and express trains and revert to pre-pandemic ticket prices with immediate effect. Since the coronavirustriggered lockdown was eased, the Railways has been running only special trains. It started with long-distance trains and now, even shortdistance passenger services are being run as special trains with “slightly higher fares”.

In a letter to the zonal railways on Friday, the Railway Board said trains will now be operated with their regular numbers and fares will revert to normal preCovid prices. “In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, all regular mail/express trains were being operated as MSPC (mail/express special) and HSP (holiday special). It has now been decided that the MSPC and HSP train services, included in the Working Time Table, 2021, shall be operated with regular numbers and with fares as applicable for the concerned classes of travel and type of train, as per the extant guidelines.” In another order, the Railway Board clarified that second class of such

trains shall continue to run as reserved except for any relaxation permitted in a special case. It also said that for tickets booked in advance, no difference of fare either is to be collected by Railways or any refund shall be permitted. Neither order however specifies when the zonal railways are required to revert to their pre-Covid regular services. “The zonal railways have been instructed. While the order is with immediate effect, the process will take a day or two,” a senior official said. “With this, more than 1,700 trains will be restored in the next few days. The first digit will now not be zero as was in the case of special trains,” another official said.

Power deptt jungle cutting re-scheduled D I M A P U R , N OV 1 2 (NPN): State power department has informed that jungle cutting along the 132kV & 66kV transmission line has been re-scheduled starting from November 1526, 2021 from 8am to 3pm In a press release, the executive engineer transmission division Kohima informed that jungle clearance and maintenance pro-

gramme of 132kV & 66kV lines was being carried out to avoid disruption and facilitate stable power supply. In this regard, the department informed that there would be total shutdown of power supply in some districts during the activity: Areas to be affected under total shutdown include Tuensang, Phek, Kiphire

district and Likimro HEP (66kV Tuensang to Kiphire and 66kV Mokokchung to Tuensang) from Nov 15-19; Likimro HEP (66kV Kiphire to LHEP) from November 20-22 and Phek district (132kV Kiphire to Meluri) from November 23-26. The department has, therefore, requested all consumers and public to bear the inconvenience caused.

D I M A P U R , N OV 1 2 (NPN): Nagaland Law Students’ Federation (NLSF) has reiterated its appeal to the state government to establish separate High Court for the state of Nagaland, government law college and directorate of prosecution in Nagaland. NLSF through its media & communication expressed grave concern that despite the passage of more than 57 years since attaining statehood, a lot more remains to be done in the legal field to ensure that the state was on a par with the rest of the states. Asser ting that the character and calibre of the

legal professions was determined by the quality and standard legal education, the federation, however, said that the importance of quality legal education was “significantly ignored” in the state. NLSF pointed out that education of law in the state law colleges were mostly pursued by those students who could afford the course at the minimal fee and within the state. To enable the interested students to avail education in law, NLSF said the state law colleges were charging fee at the lowest as compared to the high and well settled law colleges

outside the state. However, it said that many students in the state, who wish to pursue law, could not able to afford owing to their economic reasons. The federation maintained that establishing a public Law college in the state would not only serve the interest of the student community in general and the law students in particular, but would also be a sign of great progress in favour of the state. NLSF expressed regret that in spite of its repeated appeals, representation, memorandum, peaceful dharna etc., to set up a government law college, no

positive step has been taken till date. It said that the “lackadaisical attitude” towards the law students of the state by the state has “proved to be the most profound show of negligence.” The federation maintained that the state has the capability to produce “best lawyers” who could represent the High Court including the Supreme Court and even at the international arena provided due importance was given to the subject of law. “If the govt. cannot provide legal education in the state, there is no reason for the state to exist,” NLSF stated.

Nagaland: Reckitt’s climate resilience index NEW DELHI, NOV 12 (AGENCIES): Climate Resilience Index is a databacked assessment that takes into consideration factors contributing to climatic vulnerability, existing adaptation mechanisms in place and ability of the system to bounce back in case of an adverse climatic event. The index measures the ability of a state to cope with climate risks. It has been drafted by Reckitt as a measure that will help North Eastern States cope up with the ef-

fects of climate risks. This assessment of gaps with recommendations have been drafted based on ground assessments, currently being piloted in two states – Sikkim and Nagaland, NDTV report stated. Some of the highlights from the report’s findings in Nagaland: 2% declining rainfall trend observed in Nagaland from 2009-2019 (highest decline amongst 7 studied states) There has been 40% reduction in expenditure in-

curred on Water Conservation and Water Harvesting under MGNREGA (20182021) in Nagaland Low road connectivity makes accessibility difficult in the region Agriculture is the main occupation in the state but also the most vulnerable to climate change. Nagaland has also the highest out-of-pocket expense on health on hospitalisation amongst the seven states studied in the North Eastern Region

The repor t fur ther states the potential focus areas for the state: The agricultural systems in Nagaland will have to achieve climate smart objectives, government has to come up with an integrated landscape management approach. Intervention includes contour bunding (involves the placement of lines of stones along the natural rises of a landscape), contour trenching (an agricultural technique that allow for (Cont’d on p-8) water,

Nagaland observes ‘World Pneumonia Day’; SAANS launched

Dimapur

DIMAPUR: Nagaland Friday observed “World Pneumonia Day” in an effort to raise awareness about Pneumonia, the world’s biggest infectious killer which claims around 2.5 million people. Commemorating the day, ministry of health and family welfare (H&FW)’s campaign – Social Awareness and Action to Neutralise Pneumonia Successfully (SAANS) was also launched across the state. The campaign commenced on Friday and would culminate on February 28, 2022. In Dimapur, the SAANS campaign was launched by chief medical officer (CMO) Dimapur, Dr. I. trict program officer, UIP/ RCH, Dr. Rebecca spoke about SAANS. Dr. Rebecca said the main objective of the campaign was to reduce child mortality due to pneumonia by creating awareness of pneumonia in the community and improving clinical management of pneumonia. The road is part of the Kaladan multi-modal transit transport project, which is being viewed as India’s gateway to Southeast Asia, and it, when completed, will connect West Bengal’s Kolkata with Sittwe seaport in Rakhine state of Myanmar. NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2021

‘Cong ideology alive but overshadowed by BJP’

shadowed the loving, affectionate and nationalistic ideology of the Congress party. Our ideology is alive and vibrant, but it has been overshadowed by the BJP,” said the Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad in Kerala. “It has been overshadowed partly because of complete capture of the media and complete capture of the Indian nation. It has also been overshadowed as we have not propagated our ideology among our own people aggressively,” said Gandhi. Gandhi observed that Hindutva and Hinduism are two different concepts. “These are the types of things we need to ex-

plore and understand and develop a group of people...100, 200, 300, 500 people who deeply understand these differences, who can apply these differences to issues, behaviour, to action. “Is Hinduism about beating a Sikh, or a Muslim. Hindutva, of course, is. In which book is it written? I have not seen it. I have read the Upanishads. I have not read it,” he said. “We say there is a difference between Hindutva and Hindu religion. It is a simple logic - if you are a Hindu then why do you need Hindutva? why do you need this new name?” he asked.

The Congress leader said in today’s India, ideological fight has become very important. “The Congress ideology...the ideology it follows has been existing in India for thousands of years. Just like the RSS has its icons, the Congress has its own icons... they are different icons. But, we have them, it is about bringing this ideological ocean and allowing our people to swim in it,” he said. Gandhi admitted the Congress did not propagate its ideas properly in the past. “Now is the time to strengthen Congress ideology in its own organisation and spread its across India through party workers,” he said. The Congress MP stressed on importance of ideological training, which he said, should be mandatory for all party workers. “The central way to propagate the party’s ideology is by training people in a conversation about what it means to be a Congress person and how is that different from being an RSS person,” Gandhi said. “Ideologically training of party workers, in my view, should be made

NEW DELHI, NOV 12 (PTI): In a significant verdict, the Supreme Court on Friday held that the High Court cannot rely on a “draft charge-sheet”, which is yet to be filed by the police before a magisterial court, to quash criminal proceedings, saying it is “trite law” that high courts must exercise its inherent powers “sparingly and with circumspection”. The verdict came on a criminal appeal filed against a decision of the Gujarat High Court which on January 8, 2019, had quashed an FIR against several persons, accused of extorting money from the purchasers of a plot at Rajkot. The high court, which had permitted the police to continue with the prosecution of two accused out of a total of nine, had directed the police to file the draft charge sheet before the filing of the same in

the magisterial court and after perusal, quashed the FIRs against some of the accused. A bench comprising Justices DY Chandrachud and BV Nagarathna held in its verdict that the Gujarat High Court “transgressed the limitations” while exercising its inherent power under section 482 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in quashing the FIR. “We have come to the conclusion that the High Court transgressed the limitations on the exercise of its jurisdiction under Section 482 of the CrPC in quashing the FIR and all consequential proceedings. There has been a clear abuse of the process before the High Court. We accordingly set aside the impugned judgment and order of the High Court dated 8 January 2019 and allow the Criminal Appeals,” the judgement said. Referring to various

verdicts, Justice Chandrachud, writing the judgement for the bench, said, “it is trite law that the High Court must exercise its inherent powers under Section 482 (power of high courts to quash criminal cases) sparingly and with circumspection.” The bench distinguished between two legal positions and said that high courts must take into consideration the material collected during the investigation by the police after the charge sheet is filed before the magisterial court while deciding petitions seeking quashing of FIRs under section 482 of CrPC. “However, the High Court cannot place reliance on a ‘draft charge-sheet which is yet to be placed before the Magistrate to quash the criminal proceedings under Section 482,” the bench said in its 27-page verdict.

Norovirus confirmed in Wayanad, Kerala health minister issues guidelines

The virus causes inflammation of the lining of the stomach and intestines, as well as severe vomiting and diarrhoea. Norovirus does not significantly affect healthy people, but it can be serious in young children, the elderly, and those with other comorbidities. This animal-borne disease can also be spread through direct contact with infected individuals. The virus is spread through the excrement and vomit of an infected person. Therefore, it is essential to be careful as the disease spreads very quickly. However, the virus can be spread for up to two days after the onset of the disease. Some common symptoms of Norovirus include diar rhoea, abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea,

fever, headache, and body aches. Acute vomiting and diarrhoea can lead to dehydration and further complications. As per the guidelines issues, the infected people should rest at home, as directed by the doctor, and should drink ORS solution and boiled water. As preventive measures, one should take proper care of their immediate environmental hygiene and personal hygiene. “Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before eating and after using the toilet. Those who interact with animals should pay special attention,” the health ministry’s guidelines read. “Chlorinate drinking water sources, wells and storage tanks with bleaching powder. Use chlorinated water for domestic use. Use only boiled water for drinking,” it added. The ministry also said that fruits and vegetables should only be used after they have been thoroughly washed. Sea fish and shellfish such as crab and mussels must only be consumed after they are well cooked, the ministry said. “Avoid stale and exposed foods,” it added.

There is a pathological hatred for Hinduism among Congress leaders, and they get traction for this from the Gandhi family,” he alleged. Patra also referred to a comment of Rahul Gandhi, which had found a mention in the WikiLeaks in 2010, that Hindu extremist groups could pose a bigger danger to India than Islamic terror organisation and some other remarks to attack him. Gandhi had linked atrocities against women to Indian culture, he claimed. The BJP’s attack on Gandhi came a day after the ruling party had slammed the opposition party over its leader Salman Khurshid comparing Hindutva with

People of India will never forgive the Congress, he said. Gandhi on Friday said his party’s ideology is like a “beautiful jewel” with an unending power inside it, but it has been overshadowed by the BJP, and maintained Hindu and Hindutva are different concepts. Gandhi was addressing online a four-day ‘AICC orientation programme’ organised at Sevagram Ashram in Wardha in Maharashtra. Congress representatives from across the states are participating in the programme. Patra said seeking apology from him would be irrelevant. The Congress leader, he alleged, has violated constitutional tenets with his remarks that spread “hate” in society. The Congress, he said, had also tried to delay the court hearing in the Ram temple case and had, when in power, questioned the existence of Lord Ram.

NEW DELHI, NOV 12 (PTI): The BJP claimed on Friday that the Congress leadership nurses “pathological hatred” for Hinduism as it hit out at Rahul Gandhi for his criticism of Hindutva, saying it is at his behest that Congress leaders like Salman Khurshid, Shashi Tharoor and P Chidambaram have allegedly targeted the religion. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra attacked Gandhi after the Congress leader sought to draw a distinction between Hinduism and Hindutva, a term widely used by the RSS, and alleged that the RSS-BJP ideology was about spreading hate. Patra alleged that Gandhi has a history of making critical comments about Hinduism and its culture. It is in the character of the Congress and the Gandhi family to attack Hinduism at every opportunity, he said. Citing terms like Hindu Pakistan, Hindu Taliban and saffron terror used by Congress leaders Tharoor and Chidambaram, he said they make these remarks at Gandhi’s behest. He also referred to Digvijay Singh and Mani Shankar Aiyar in this

WA R D H A , N OV 1 2 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday said his party’s ideology is like a “beautiful jewel” with an unending power inside it, but it has been overshadowed by the BJP, and maintained Hindu and Hindutva are different concepts. If crystalized, the Congress ideology which is alive and vibrant will envelope that of the BJP-RSS, he said and emphasised on strengthening his party’s ideas within the organisation and spreading them across the country. Gandhi was addressing online a four-day ‘AICC orientation programme’ organised at Sevagram Ashram in Wardha. Congress representatives from across the states are participating in the programme. He said, “We have to accept that there are two ideologies in India - the Congress ideology and the RSS ideology. We have to accept the BJP-RSS has spread hatred in today’s India.” The former Congress president said there has been “complete capture” of the media by the saffron outfit. “The BJP has over-

mandatory irrespective of seniority,” Gandhi said in his address. Gandhi said the Congress ideology, if studied and propagated deeply in the organisation, has answers of all questions related to various issues of public concern - ranging from Article 370, terrorism to nationalism, but the party doesn’t give necessary “tools” to its workers to articulate them. Gandhi said the Congress ideology is like a “beautiful jewel” with an unending power inside it. “It is our strength... it is why we exist and it is important we discover it. They (BJP) have discovered their ideology and crystalized it. We have to crystalize our ideology and the moment we do that it will envelope their ideology. The hate that is being spread today will vanish and the future which seems uncertain will become certain,” he added. Recalling his conversation with former Uttarakhand minister Yashpal Arya who returned to the party fold last month, Gandhi said Arya told him for a Congressman, it is very suffocating to survive in the BJP.

VOL. XXXI NO. 339 DIMAPUR, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2021

Equipping for the future

M

uch has been said about education and the prevalent system which has not been up to the task of producing youths with It is true that education is not only about being qualified for jobs but also being an active participant for transformation of society and also sets the educated mind free. There is need to develop a curriculum of life skills and soft skill (emotional intelligence) for the whole school stage, involving both the left and right brain competences. Each year a few thousand graduate from colleges and join the growing ranks of the unemployed. The situation has indeed crossed the point of being merely a matter of serious concern. More jobs are needed but there isn’t any. To add to the problem, the state’s economy is on unsure ground and no industries and restricted opportunities for investments in private enterprises owing to the feeling of insecurity. Institutions have always held academic excellence and high quality as the highest goals. In other states that have achieved notable successes in higher education, much stress in put on the overall preparedness of a student during and after leaving the college. This is identified by a term called value added education which is about assessing the development of the student and what has been attained during college and various capabilities that have been imbued. The assessment of value added education also puts a lot of onus on the skills, methods and goals of teachers in adding capabilities on the students. As the world becomes more and more technology based and fast paced, the competition for jobs will grow even fiercer. Soon there will be only the most menial jobs for those who will not go on to college, training in computer programming will be almost mandatory. With economic growth and globalization, there are debates brewing on how to improve the quality of higher education. Education programs focus on bettering student achievements, career orientation, improving education quality, professional development and innovation. The state government spends a very large amount of money on education aside from funds through various Centrally Sponsored Schemes which are additions to the normal budget. Besides unavailability of teachers for science and mathematics, most buildings of the government schools in the far flung areas are in dilapidated state. Though government educational institutions expanded tremendously, both in terms of infrastructure as well as in the number of teaching faculty; they seem to be faced with many problems. Most of these are actually due to inherent administrative problems such as- decisions on appointment and deployment that have seem to be done through political and bureaucratic interferences. However, the big gap probably reveals an endemic problem within the government’s education system which needs to be analysed and concrete actions taken to stem the rot. In order to fulfil the need for quality education, the centre has unveiled the National Education Policy 2020 to provide quality impartation. Whatever be the content of the NEP 2020, in the end it all boils down to the implementation. It is an accepted fact that genuine improvements in pedagogy will only come when teaching is no longer seen simply as a matter of technique or performance or planning or even design, but rather as a matter of equity and the well-rounded development of the products that eventually come out of colleges and universities.

DailyDevotion The Changed Life

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. —2 Corinthians 5:17

What understanding do you have of the salvation of your soul? The work of salvation means that in your real life things are dramatically changed. You no longer look at things in the same way. Your desires are new and the old things have lost their power to attract you. One of the tests for determining if the work of salvation in your life is genuine is— has God changed the things that really matter to you? If you still yearn for the old things, it is absurd to talk about being born from above— you are deceiving yourself. If you are born again, the Spirit of God makes the change very evident in your real life and thought. And when a crisis comes, you are the most amazed person on earth at the wonderful difference there is in you. There is no possibility of imagining that you did it. It is this complete and amazing change that is the very evidence that you are saved. What difference has my salvation and sanctification made? For instance, can I stand in the light of 1 Corinthians 13 , or do I squirm and evade the issue? True salvation, worked out in me by the Holy Spirit, frees me completely. And as long as I “walk in the light as He is in the light” (1 John 1:7), God sees nothing to rebuke because His life is working itself into every detailed part of my being, not on the conscious level, but even deeper than my consciousness.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2021

D

iabetes is a metabolic disorder in which the body is unable to appropriately regulate the level of sugar, specifically glucose in the blood, either by poor sensitivity to the protein insulin, or due to inadequate production of insulin by the pancreas. Diabetes has been on the rise globally for decades. With an increase in age, the prevalence of Diabetes also increases and about 25% of the population above 65 years of age has diabetes. Over time, high blood glucose leads to problems such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, nerve damage, foot problems etc. Most of the people suffering from diabetes have musculoskeletal, complications like frozen shoulder, back pain and osteoarthritis. People with poorly managed type 1 diabetes have a syndrome of limited joint mobility. Diabetic amyotrophy is a type of neuropathy that has muscle wasting and weakening in the thighs. Carpal tunnel syndrome and sciatica are the other neurological conditions that occur in people suffering from diabetes. In

T

Diabetes and Physiotherapy

all these conditions, physiotherapy plays a major role in returning people to their normal life. The physiotherapist uses a combination of active and passive exercises, and mechanical and electrical aids to promote musculoskeletal and neurological functions. Types of Diabetes Type 1- occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks and kills the beta cells of the pancreas. No, or very little, insulin is released into the body. Type 2- occurs when the body cannot properly use the insulin that is released (called insulin insensitivity) or does not make enough insulin. Type 2 diabetes often referred to as adult-onset diabetes, type 2 diabetes has much stronger links to poor diet and exercise regime. Although there is no cure to either of the two types, type 2 is brought on largely by a lack of exercise. Therefore, it is no surprise that exercise can help manage the condition and keep people who have it, healthier for longer. Symptoms Most of the patients

with diabetes commonly present with: • Increased thirst • Increased urination • Lack of energy and fatigue • Bacterial and fungal infections • D e l aye d wo u n d healing • May also complain of numbness or tingling in hands or feet or with blurred vision. • Can have modest hyperglycemia, which can proceed to severe hyperglycemia or ketoacidosis (DKA) coma as the first manifestation in about 30% of patients. • Person with diabetes usually Type 1 may experience weight loss because of the improper fat metabolism and breakdown of fat stores. Physiotherapy on Diabetes Physiotherapy is a useful tool in the battle against diabetes for a number of reasons. Firstly, it allows the patient to achieve a healthy weight. Being obese or overweight is a major risk factor for diabetes, so many people who suffer from diabetes will

also be at risk of other complications associated with being overweight. Exercising with a physiotherapist can help reduce the risk of further complications in other areas, as well as improve the overall quality of life for the patient. Furthermore, a common symptom amongst diabetics is fatigue; so many people may gradually become more sedentary and put themselves at risk of gaining weight. Physiotherapy can help prevent this by getting people into the habit of exercising regularly. As diabetes is a serious disease and requires a lot of balance in areas such as diet, insulin and exercise, it is important to visit a physiotherapist. They can have a look at your case history as well as give you a physical examination to make sure that the two of you can work together to build a regimen that is both safe and helpful. The focus of the exercises is not simply to help you lose or manage your weight. The exercises also aim to improve blood flow. Maintenance of the exercise

program in patients with diabetes is an important goal because it is associated with long-term cardiovascular benefits and reduced mortality. Most diabetics will begin with simple, low-pressure indoor exercises and gradually build up to more challenging workouts over time. There is of course always the risk that a patient could faint, or suffer from a number of conditions associated with diabetes, such as hypoglycemia. This is why it is so important to ensure that you never work out alone or with someone who does not understand your condition. If you are experiencing difficulty when exercising, orange juice and a high-carb snack help many diabetics during their workouts. Exercise plays an important role in controlling blood glucose. It has become one of the ideal means of rehabilitation for patients with diabetes .Simple exercise like walking can be effect in regulating the blood glucose level. Gait and balance of patients suffering from diabetic and diabetic peripheral neuropathy can

be improved with exercises. Lifestyle changes may be difficult to undertake, especially in older adults; therefore, self-management education and support focused on general knowledge of diabetes, adherence to therapy, lifestyle changes, and self-monitoring of blood glucose are fundamental to optimise glycemic control in order to prevent or delay acute and chronic complications and to improve quality of life for people with diabetes. There is no cure for diabetes, but many of its symptoms are physical. Physiotherapy can help not only to relieve these symptoms, but also to improve a person’s condition and quality of life overall. Private schools are ridiculing the RTE

he “Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009” has been implemented since 1st April 2010 with the objective of ensuring quality education to all children in the country. In the light of the provision of the Act, rules & regulations were promulgated by the State Governments regarding grant of approval to private schools and minimum criteria and conditions were prescribed for all schools. Within six months of the implementation of the rules, all private schools had to submit self-declaration, before a threemember district committee, regarding compliance of the standards and norms mentioned in the Act and fulfillment of the conditions. The norms fixed includes school to be operated through a legitimate society/trust, not to be operated for the benefit of any individual or group, to work in accordance with the values enshrined in the constitution, to use the building/ structure/ground etc. only for education and skill development. There are some minimum standards, norms and conditions for schools in the law, such as one class room per teacher, drinking water facility, toilet, playground, kitchen, barrier free elements, boundary wall, provision of teachers on the basis of number of students, prescribed minimum qualification in the employment of teachers, enrollment of children from disadvantaged and weaker sections on at least 25 percent

seats in first and early childhood classes, enrollment of children in age-relative classes and special training to make them skilled, relevant courses by educational authority, teaching in mother tongue, neither any test nor donation for admission etc. Commission for Protection of Child Rights have been constituted at national as well as state level. The concerned district committee had to do site inspection within three months and give approval in case the schools met the standards and norms and in case of non-compliance, three years’ time was to be given to complete them. Some private schools in the states openly challenged the government’s regulations and called it interference in the autonomy of the school. The Provision and fulfillment of the standards and norms cannot be termed government interference. In fact, according to the law, the standards, norms and conditions set for the school are not in the capacity of 90 percent of the private schools. They neither have adequate physical infrastructure nor teachers with prescribed qualifications. Each school has its own cumbersome & irrelevant curriculum and ropey English has been forcibly imposed on children in lieu of mother tongue. The admission test of children for enrollment is going on fearlessly. They are finding themselves naked in the mirror of the law. For them education is just a business and

school is a shop. How then can they declare that their school is not a non-profit institution? As per rule,75 percent of the members in the school management committee will be the parents. But the parents, who in the name of the future of their children pay huge amount with their blood and sweat, are being termed as outsiders by the school administrators. It is a self-evident fact that since the schools have been governmentised, the intimate relationship of the society with the school has been disappeared. The community character of the school has vanished and the teachers have been turned into a government servant instead of a guide & path-shower. They are being engaged in all kinds of non-educational works. Due to good service conditions and salary, instead of mission-mode spirit, the domination of the people only for livelihood has increased in this pious profession of teaching. The government education system has collapsed due to limitless powers of education officers and their plundering policy. People have lost their faith in government schools. Taking illegitimate advantage of the flaws prevailing in government schools, private schools have established their own empire, where on one hand there is monopoly of managers, while the children are victims of financial, physical, mental & linguistic exploitation. If we look at the routine of

private schools, it is found that from the first day itself, huge amount is taken in the name of examination and fees. Every material from pencil to copy, book, dress has to be purchased from the school’s prescribed shop at arbitrary expensive price. The order of not opening the school before 8 a.m. fixed by the administration has been overruled and the young child has to get up at 5 a.m. in a semi-sleep to prepare for the school. Instead of the mother tongue, they are forced to converse in English, otherwise they are either punished or ridiculed. Less class work and more homework are provided in the name of studies. Since parents pay huge amount in the form of fees, they make their children proficient either by themselves or through tuition. If the parents do not pay special attention to the children from their own level, then the education system of these schools will totally collapse. Under the burden of redundant courses, private schools have killed the childhood of children. A 5-6 year old child is left entangled in 30-40 books & notebooks. They have neither time to play nor proper sleep. After all, how would be all round development of the children? How ridiculous is the demand to allow a separate seating arrangement for the children from 25 percent depressed and weaker sections of the society? In the name of globalization and modernity,

their heart, mind and thinking have also been adapted to the British Era mindset. If this is not the irony of independent India, then what is it that a child from a poor section is being openly declared as a second class citizen! On the one hand, we chant the melody of “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat” and “Ek Desh Ek Vidhan”, while on the other hand we do not shy away by making provision of separate education system for the resourceful citizens negating “Ek Desh Ek Gyan”. A decade has passed since the enactment of the Right to Education Act, but no action has taken against the schools, which did not meet the prescribed criteria. Due to the corrupt, sluggish and careless educational management; the graduates, on whose shoulders future of the country rests, are bound to bear the brunt of the derailed education system. Quality elementary education, full of all resources, is the foundation of a nation and children of all strata are its future. The private schools must not be allowed to do arbitrariness in the name of education, to mock the law, to keep the spirit of untouchability to poor children, to spoil children’s childhood and to establish parallel empire. The government should come forward with “One Nation One Education” policy, so that all sections of society may have same education and opportunity. Er. Prabhat Kishore is a technocrat & educationist.

NEW DELHI, NOV 12 (IANS): Supreme Court on Friday agreed to examine a plea seeking direction to the Central government to analyse various international laws and take “effective and stringent” steps against the menace of hate speech and rumour-mongering in the country. A bench of justices A.M. Khanwilkar and C.T. Ravikumar scheduled the matter for hearing on November 22, along with a separate plea, which also came up for hearing during the day, in connection with the hate speech issue. The bench has asked senior advocate Vikas Singh, representing advocate Ashwini Upadhyay, to serve

NBCC fined Rs 5 lakh for violating dust control norms NEW DELHI, NOV 12 (PTI): National Building Construction Corporation has been fined Rs 5 lakh for violating dust control norms at a project in Karkardooma in East Delhi, Environment Minister Gopal Rai said. Rai kicked off the second leg of the anti-dust campaign on Friday which will continue until December 12. “We conducted an inspection of the NBCC project in Karkardooma and found that it has not taken dust control measures at some places. Accordingly, a fine of Rs 5 lakh has been imposed on the company.” The minister said all departments have been asked to create anti-dust cells and work in coordination with the Delhi Pollution Control Committee to implement the ‘Joint Anti-Dust Action Plan’. “During phase-I, 450 of 2,500 construction sites inspected were found violating the rules and regulations. A fine of around Rs 1.3 crore was imposed on these sites,” he said.

The plea sought a direction that courts, while awarding punishment for the offences against “public tranquillity, offences relating to elections etc”, should give sentences running consecutively and not concurrently. Upadhyay also sought a direction to the Centre to take legislative steps to implement recommendations of the law commission to deal with hate speech and rumour-mongering. take precaution. Out of curiosity, when the inebriated worker went too close to the swollen Cooum River, he tripped and fell into the river and was drowned. So far at least 14 people have died in rain related incidents in Tamil Nadu. When civic workers were cutting down a huge fallen tree here, a lengthy snake quietly surfaced from the dense foliage. An expert snake catcher, deployed by the Forest Department, rescued it with ease. So far over 20 snakes including venomous varieties were rescued during the rains in the past few days, a Forest official here said. During the rains, the official said many phone calls were received reporting sighting of snakes. Sufficient number of personnel, who are experts in catching snakes and volunteers were also deployed by the government. “We will release snakes caught in the city. These reptiles will be safely set free in reserve forest areas near

Mambakkam or Tiruporur off city limits,” the official told PTI. Be it the state disaster response force, civic bodies or the state disaster management teams, they did their best with the support of volunteers in several areas to try and rescue not only people but also cattle. Stray cows were rescued from a locality and provided food here and priority was given by them to ensure food supply to the elderly people in flooded localities. Tamil Nadu police deployed 75,000 of its personnel, 350 of its coastal security group men, also well experienced in use of kayak, a 250-member special force trained for disaster scenarios besides trained 364 home guard men. The National Disaster Response force personnel usually use life jackets, life buoys, rain coats and inflatable boats during rescue operations. But, the idea to carry a large tarpaulin like rain-resistant sheet came in handy for them here.

Hizbul commander among 2 terrorists killed in Kashmir

S R I NAG A R , N OV 1 2 (IANS): The two terrorists killed in an encounter with the security forces in the Chawalgam area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district have been identified and one of them was a Hizbul Mujahideen commander, Jammu and Kashmir Police said on Friday. “Killed terrorists identified as District commander of HM Shiraz Molvi and Yawar Bhat. Shiraz was active since 2016 and was involved in recruiting innocent youth into terror ranks and several civilian killings. “A big success for us,” police quoting Kashmir IGP Vijay Kumar said. The gunfight took place on Thursday after a joint team of the police and the army cordoned off the area and launched a search operation on the basis of specific information about the presence of terrorists. As the security forces zeroed in on the spot where terrorists were hiding they came under a heavy volume of fire that triggered the encounter.

Covaxin: 77.8% efficacy against symptomatic Covid-19: Lancet study NEW DELHI/HYDERABAD, NOV 12 (PTI): Two doses of Covaxin, India’s indigenous COVID-19 vaccine, offer 77.8 per cent protection against symptomatic disease and present no serious safety concerns, according to an interim analysis of its phase 3 trial published in The Lancet on Friday. Covaxin, an inactivated whole virus vaccine developed by Hyderabadbased Bharat Biotech, recently received emergency use approval from the World Health Organization (WHO) for people aged 18 and above. The phase 3 trial find-

ings indicate that Covaxin induces a robust antibody response with no severe vaccine-related adverse events or deaths reported among the trial participants, the authors of the study said. The majority of the adverse events, including headache, fatigue, fever, and pain at the injection site, were mild and occurred within seven days of vaccination, they explained. The trial took place this year, with participants aged 18 and older randomly assigned to receive two doses of the vaccine or a placebo. Participants

considered to be at risk of acquiring Covid-19 were prioritised with 2,750 participants above 60 years of age and 5,724 participants who reported at least one pre-existing medical condition, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or obesity, across ages. This study was conducted with participants from diverse geographic locations across 25 hospitals in India. The trial also found that Covaxin was welltolerated among all trial participants, with 12 per cent of vaccine and placebo groups reporting an adverse event.

Biden, Xi to hold virtual meeting on Nov 15

WASHINGTON, NOV 12 (PTI): US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping will hold a virtual summit on Monday to discuss ways to “responsibly manage” the competition between the two countries, as well as ways to work together where their interests align, the White House announced on Friday. US officials said last month that they had reached a tentative agreement with China to hold a virtual meeting between Biden and Xi before the end of the year, as part of an effort to ensure stability in one of the world’s most consequential and fraught relationships. “In the evening of Monday November 15 in Washington, DC, President Joseph R Biden, Jr. will meet virtually with President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China (PRC),” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said. “Following their September 9 phone call, the two leaders will discuss ways to responsibly manage the competition between the United States and the PRC, as well as

ways to work together where our interests align,” she said. “Throughout, President Biden will make clear US intentions and priorities and be clear and candid about our concerns with the PRC,” Psaki said in a statement. Tensions between the US and China have escalated in the last several years. President Biden’s pre-

decessor, Donald Trump, followed a tough stance on China, beginning with trade. Trump levied tariffs on billions of dollars’ worth of imports from China, prompting retaliation from Beijing. The Biden administration has maintained Trump’s tough position, and worked more with traditional US allies to collectively put pressure

on Beijing on a range of issues, including human rights, Taiwan, Xinjiang and Tibet. Biden has also stepped up America’s engagement in the Indo-Pacific region, which has seen aggressive moves by the Chinese military. However, in a surprise move, China and the US this week announced at that the two countries will

boost climate co-operation. The US and China are the world’s two biggest CO2 emitters. The announcement by the two global rivals was made on Wednesday at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow. The last time Biden and Xi spoke was in September, in a phone call that lasted roughly 90 minutes. The two leaders also spoke for two hours in February -- their first phone call since Biden took office in January this year. The tentative agreement to hold a virtual summit between Xi and Biden was the result of an extended, six-hour meeting between Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan and China’s top diplomat, Yang Jiechi in Switzerland, just days after Beijing sent record-breaking numbers of war planes into Taiwan’s defence zone. President Xi has not left China in 21 months, following moves to tighten the country’s borders in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He skipped the G20 summit in late October, as well as the COP26 climate conference in Scotland this month.

Myanmar court sentences US journalist to 11 years in jail BA N G KO K , N OV 1 2 (AP): A court in militaryruled Myanmar on Friday sentenced detained US journalist Danny Fenster to 11 years in prison after finding him guilty on several charges, including incitement for allegedly spreading false or inflammatory information. Fenster, the managing editor of the online magazine Frontier Myanmar, was also found guilty of contacting illegal organisations and violating visa regulations, lawyer Than Zaw Aung said. He was sentenced to the maximum term on each charge. Fenster has been detained since May. He still faces two additional charges in a different court for allegedly violating the counterterrorism law and a statute covering treason and sedition. “Everyone at Frontier is disappointed and frustrated at this decision. We just want to see Danny released as soon as possible so he can go home to his family,” Editor-in-Chief Thomas Kean said in a statement after the sentencing. Fenster was detained at Yangon International Airport on May 24 as he was about to board a flight

to go to the Detroit area in the United States to see his family. He is the only foreign journalist to be convicted of a serious crime since the army seized power in February, ousting the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. The military-installed government has cracked down hard on press freedom, shutting virtually all critical outlets and arresting about 100 journalists, roughly 30 of whom remain in jail. Some of the closed outlets have continued operating without a license, publishing online as their staff members dodge arrest. The army takeover was met by widespread peaceful protests that were put down with lethal force. The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners has detailed the deaths of more

than 1,200 civilians, in addition to about 10,000 arrests. Armed resistance has since spread, and U.N. experts and others observers fear the incipient insurgency can slide into civil war. Despite testimony from more than a dozen prosecution witnesses, it was never clear what Fenster was alleged to have done. Much of the prosecution’s case appeared to hinge on his being employed by one of the media outlets, Myanmar Now, that had been ordered closed this year. But Fenster had left his job at Myanmar Now in July last year, joining Frontier Myanmar the following month. “The court disregarded a significant amount of evidence of his employment at Frontier, including tax and social security records and testimony from a Frontier employee,” said the statement from Frontier Myanmar. “There is absolutely no basis to convict Danny of these charges. His legal team clearly demonstrated to the court that he had resigned from Myanmar Now and was working for Frontier from the middle of last year,” it quoted Kean as saying.

The blast happened in Spin Ghar district of the eastern province, a hotbed of Islamic State group activity since the Taliban seized power in the country in August. “I can confirm a blast during Friday prayers inside a mosque in Spin Ghar district. There are casual-

ties and fatalities,” a Taliban official told AFP. “So far three killed, 15 wounded,” a doctor at the local hospital told AFP. The Afghan branch of the Islamic State group, which first emerged in Nangarhar in 2015, has claimed responsibility for a series of bloody attacks in Afghanistan since the Taliban’s return to power. One of the latest, in early November, saw IS fighters raid the Kabul National Military Hospital, killing at least 19 people and injuring more than 50.

CPC defends President Xi’s ‘core’ leader status the country’s political history and cleared the decks for him to extend his rule for a record third term next year and perhaps beyond. The resolution - the only third of its kind in the party’s 100-year history after one issued under party founder Mao Zedong and his successor Deng Xiaoping - was reviewed and adopted at the sixth plenary session of the 19th CPC Central Committee attended by over 400 senior party officials. Defending party’s decision to enhance Xi’s status as core leader, Jian Jinquan,

Director of policy research of the CPC, told a press conference here that for a party with 95 million members and the country with 1.4 billion people, “it will be unimaginable had there not been a core of the party”. It will result in a “lack of cohesion and nothing can be accomplished,” Jian said, a day after the Plenum. “Only when there is the core of the party central committee, the whole party will have strength,” he said. Xi as “the core of the party, leader of the people and commander of the army is well deserved. This repre-

BEIJING, NOV 12 (PTI): China’s Communist Party on Friday stoutly defended President Xi Jinping’s “core” leader status that enables him to tighten grip on power, saying under him the ruling party will have an “anchor” and the nation a “backbone”, even as it asserted that democracy was not an “exclusive patent” of the US and the West. COLOMBO, NOV 12 (PTI): At least 26 people have been killed and over 230,000 others affected in recent days due to extreme weather conditions in Sri Lanka, authorities said on Friday. The months of October and November are usually the northeastern monsoon season in Sri Lanka. However, higher than usual rainfalls have been reported in most parts of the country this year. So far 26 people have died and over 230,000 oth-

ers affected due to the continuous rains. At least six people were struck by lightning, the Disaster Management Centre said. According to the Centre, with rains slowing and flood waters receding, the affected areas are slowly returning to normal. The reservoir sluice gates that had been opened are being gradually shut again. However, the weather bureau said rains will occur in several provinces in the island nations.

KABUL, NOV 12 (IANS): The Taliban-led government in Afghanistan have allowed traders to carry weapons for protection after a number of businesspersons complained about their safety, a media report said. The Khaama Press report on Thursday cited Interior Ministry spokesman Saeed Khostai as saying that the Taliban will give the permission once technical issues are resolved. Khostai reiterated that the Taliban government is committed to protect all the traders and businesspersons in the country. After the fall of Kabul on August 15, only Taliban fighters were allowed to carry arms and weapons, while the general public were banned. Before this, Afghan traders and investors would carry weapons and had armed security guards as there were huge threats of kidnapping, looting, and money heisting.

sents the prevailing aspiration of the people. His core leadership is call of the times, the choice of history and aspiration of the people. In his leadership, the party will have an anchor, the nation a backbone,” Jian said. The core status empowers Xi, 68, who will be completing his second five-year tenure next year, to continue for a third term and perhaps for life, unlike his predecessors. Jian while eulogising Xi’s leadership sought to project the CPC as democratic party, refuting criticism of its autocratic

functioning. He specially attacked US President Joe Biden’s plan to hold a summit of democracies next month as Washington seeks to rally countries with democratic systems. “Recently, the US has put together the so-called summit for democracies to revitalise the western democracy. To convene such a summit against the backdrop of loads of problems for the western democracies is such an irony. The intention is nothing but bashing other countries and dividing the world, which cannot be achieved,” he said.

some fossil fuel exporting nations have objected to. The question of how to address the continued use of fossil fuels responsible for much of global warming has been one of the key sticking points at the twoweek talks. Scientists agree it is necessary to end their use as soon as possible to meet the 2015 Paris accord’s ambitious goal of capping global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit). But explicitly including such a call in the overarching declaration is politically sensitive, including for countries, such as Saudi Arabia, that fear oil and gas may be targeted next. Another crunch issue is the question of financial aid for poor countries to cope with climate change. Rich nations failed to provide them with USD 100 billion annually by 2020, as agreed, causing considerable anger among developing countries going into the talks. The latest draft reflects

The government raised the private gathering limit to 10 in the greater Seoul area from November 1 after initiating its “living with Covid-19 scheme” for people’s gradual return to normal life. The Prime Minister’s office explained the luncheon was originally scheduled for 10, but one of Kim’s invitees brought his wife.

Political battle over Covid vax, mask mandates continues in US WASHINGTON, NOV 12 (IANS): A political battle over Covid-19 vaccination and mask mandates has continued in the US, as the federal government pushed through its inoculation campaign with young children being targeted in the latest efforts. Climate talks hold back end of coal use G L A S G OW, N OV 1 2 (AP): Negotiators at this year’s UN climate talks in Glasgow appeared to be backing away from a call to end all use of coal and phase out fossil fuel subsidies completely, but gave poor countries hope for more financial support to cope with global warming. The latest draft proposals from the meeting’s chair released Friday call on countries to accelerate “the phaseout of unabated coal power and of inefficient subsidies for fossil fuels.” A previous proposal Wednesday had been stronger, calling on countries to “accelerate the phasing out of coal and subsidies for fossil fuel.” The changes, if agreed, could give countries loopholes to continue burning coal and subsidise fossil fuels. While the chair’s proposal is likely to undergo further negotiation at the talks, due to end Friday, the change in wording suggested a shift away from unconditional demands that

SEOUL, NOV 12 (IANS): South Korean Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum on Friday apologised for violating social distancing rules when he met with his college alumni last week. “I am deeply sorry,” Kim said at the start of a state affairs coordination meeting. “I promise that I will look after myself thoroughly so that this kind of incident never happens again.” The Prime Minister came under fire after media reported that a total of 11 people, including Kim

those concerns, expressing “deep regret” that the USD 100 billion goal hasn’t been met and urging rich countries to scale up their funding. It also adds wording that could create a fund to compensate countries for serious destruction resulting from climate change. Rich nations such as the United States, who have historically been the biggest source of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, are opposed to any legal obligation to pay for loss and damage suffered by poor countries. Negotiators from almost 200 nations gathered in Glasgow on Oct. 31 amid dire warnings from leaders, activists and scientists that not enough is being done to curb global warming. According to the proposed decision, countries plan to express “alarm and utmost concern” that human activities have already caused around 1.1C (2F) of global warming “and that impacts are already being felt in every region.”

Xinhua news agency quoted local media reports as saying. Missouri was joined in the suit by eight other states with Republican Governors: Nebraska, Arkansas, Iowa, Wyoming, Alaska, South Dakota, North Dakota, and New Hampshire. Kansas, the 10th state, has a Democratic Governor, but is a reliably Republican state in presidential elections. “Unfortunately, with this latest mandate from the Biden Administration, last year’s healthcare heroes are turning into this year’s

unemployed,” Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt said in an official statement. He added that requiring healthcare workers to get a vaccination or face termination is “unconstitutional and unlawful, and could exacerbate healthcare staffing shortages to the point of collapse, especially in Missouri’s rural areas”. Meanwhile, school mask mandates have been a contentious issue for months, with the disputes moving from school board meetings to courtrooms.

he South Korean breakout hit ‘Squid Game’ has emerged as a big contender in the US year-end awards season, possibly to become the first Korean-made TV series winning a trophy at prestigious awards ceremonies. The highly competitive race for great TV shows and movies of the year is the biggest celebration for the US entertainment industry eying for the Emmys and Oscars next year, says Yonhap news agency. In the past two years, the American awards season unprecedentedly caught the eyes of Korean people, after Bong Joon-ho’s ‘Parasite’ swept the awards-positioning autumn film festivals and the eventual Academy Awards, and Youn Yuh-jung of ‘Minari’ brought home the first acting Oscar. Written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the nine-part Netflix series about contestants engaged in deadly Korean children’s playground games to win the equivalent of $38.5 million in prize money, has become a global phenomenon, viewed by 142 million households over the first four weeks of its release on September 17. Last month, the organisers of the 2021 Gotham Awards nominated ‘Squid Game’ for two categories -Breakthrough Series: Long Format (over 40 minutes) and Outstanding Performance in a New Series for its lead, Lee Jung-jae. the second set but Sakkari converted her third break point opportunity for a 4-3 lead that looked decisive given Sakkari’s dominant serving. The Greek won 26 of 27 first serve points and was never broken in the contest played on the purple court in the highaltitude Mexican City. Before match point, Swiatek appeared to start crying and after clinching victory Sakkari comforted her at the net with a hug. “I saw that she was struggling. It wasn’t a nice thing to see from the other side of the net,” Sakkari said of her 20-year-old opponent, who won last year’s French Open. “She’s a very, very nice girl. We always have great practices and great chats. It was something natural,” she said of the hug.

Sakkari improved to 3-0 against Swiatek, with all of those wins coming this year. The powerful Sakkari is enjoying a breakthrough year, having reached the semi-finals of the French Open and U.S. Open to secure a career-high world ranking of number six. The WTA Finals divides the players into two groups of four to play in a round-robin format, with each player competing in three matches. The top two from each group will advance to the semi-finals. The WTA Finals were not held last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic and were originally scheduled to take place in Shenzhen before being moved because of pandemic-related travel restrictions in China.

Premier League clubs oppose FIFA bid for biennial WCs

Rahane to lead India in 1st Test against NZ

LONDON, NOV 12 (AP): Premier League clubs united in their opposition to plans for biennial World Cups when they discussed the FIFA overhaul of the international calendar at a meeting. The 20 teams also all opposed a FIFA proposal to reduce the five windows for international men’s matches to just two in a year. “The Premier League is committed to preventing any radical changes to the post-2024 FIFA international match calendar that would adversely affect player welfare and threaten the competitiveness, calendar, structures and traditions of domestic football,” Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said in a statement on Thursday. UEFA has already expressed its concerns about the changes to world football being championed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Arsene Wenger, the former Arsenal manager who is now chief of global football development at FIFA.

Include 10 leading cricketers in LPL: SLC C O LO M B O, N OV 1 2 (IANS): The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) demanded that 10 national players including former captains Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Janith Perera be included in the second Lanka Premier League (LPL) Twenty20 franchise cricket tournament starting on December 5. SLC, the countr y’s cricket governing body forwarded the names of Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Janith Perera, Dhananjaya de Silva, Akila Dananjaya, Praveen Jayawickrama, Minod Bhanuka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Ashan Priyanjan and Shiran

Fernando who were opted out from the selection by the LPL franchise holders. While making mandatory to include the ten players including those who were in the Sri Lanka’s T20 squad now being played at the ongoing T20 World cup, to the series, the SLC directed franchisees to pick two players each for the five teams. The SLC has stated that it as the governing body of the LPL has observed that franchise owners have opted not to select certain national players and some young players who play excellent domestic cricket and are considered potential future stars.

“Considering the above deficiency and in the interest of the game of cricket in Sri Lanka, the Governing Council of the Lanka Premier League 2021 decided to forward the names of 10 deserving players, who missed out during the Player draft, to all the franchise owners, and make it ‘mandatory’ for each franchise to select two players out of the given 10 into their squad, thus expanding the squad strength from 20 to 22,” the SLC said in a statement. The SLC had said that for this year’s edition, 673 applications were received from foreign players and 358 from local cricketers

who were keen to represent the domestic presence at the LPL. “Accordingly, a total of 1,031 players (local and overseas) went into the draft, whilst the ‘Right’ of selecting the suitable and desirous players for the 20 member squads, was solely vested with the ‘Franchise Owners’ subject to compliance with the guidelines set by the SLC,” it stated. It was reported that 74 international cricketers including Imran Tahir, Mohammad Amir, Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Dawid Malan and Faf du Plessis, Mohammad Hafeez and Tabraiz Shamsi were drafted in by various teams.

Andhra wicketkeeper-bat Srikar Bharat, who was a standby for COVID-recovered Wriddhiman Saha for the England tour earlier this year, has been added to the squad now and opener Shubhman Gill, who last played in the WTC finale also returns to the side. Meanwhile, Suryaku-

mar Yadav, Prithvi Shaw, Hanuma Vihari, and Abhimanyu Easwaran, who were all part of the subsequent Test series, against England, have been left out from the 16-member list, along with Shardul Thakur, who will be out of action from the preceding T20Is as well. However, BCCI later added Vihari to the India ‘A’ squad for the South Africa tour. The batsman, who is currently playing the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20s for Hyderabad, last played a Test in Sydney in January.

(this year’s) Copa America and, for me, he is a source of pride. I’d love everyone to have the same desire to play that he does, even when they are not fully fit.” Argentina are currently second in the 10-team South American qualifying group with seven wins and four draws from 11 matches, six points behind Brazil. Meanwhile in Quito, a first-half goal from teenage defender Piero Hincapie gave Ecuador a 1-0 home win over Venezuela in their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Thursday evening. The 19-year-old Bayer Leverkusen centreback latched onto a curling Gonzalo Plata free-kick with a diving header that looped into the back of the net after ricocheting off goalkeeper Rafael Romo.

Uncapped Prasidh Krishna, who was promoted from the reserves on the England tour, has retained his place in the squad and Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, and Mohammed Siraj are the other pacers. The squad also sees the comeback of off-spinning allrounder Jayant Yadav, who last played for India in 2017. His inclusion comes on the back of a prolonged time off for Washington Sundar, who is yet to fully recover from a finger injury sustained in July, ahead of the England Tests. US Olympian Sunisa Lee ‘pepper sprayed in racist attack’ L O N D O N, N OV 1 2 (AGENCIES): US Olympic gymnast Sunisa Lee has said she was pepper-sprayed in a racist drive-by attack in Los Angeles. In an interview with Pop Sugar, the gold winner and first US-Hmong Olympian said she and a group of Asian friends were targeted while waiting for a ride, BBC reported. The incident took place a few weeks ago as she was in LA to film Dancing with the Stars, she told the magazine. Attacks on people of Asian descent have risen amid the Covid-19 pandemic, which was first reported in China. Lee, 18, made history by travelling to Tokyo this summer, becoming the first US Olympic athlete from the Hmong ethnic group. K Y M C

The gymnast said she and her friends, all of Asian descent, were waiting for their Uber after a night out when a car passed with people inside shouting ethnic slurs and telling them to “go back to where they came from”. One person sprayed her in the arm with pepper spray before the vehicle sped away, she said. “I was so mad, but there was nothing I could do or control because they

skirted off,” Lee said. “I didn’t do anything to them, and having the reputation, it’s so hard because I didn’t want to do anything that could get me into trouble. “I just let it happen.” Lee - whose parents immigrated to the US from Laos - comes from St Paul, Minnesota. She vaulted onto the world stage last summer after the withdrawal of her teammate Simone Biles. It comes amid a dramatic rise in attacks on Asian Americans. In April, US karate Olympian Sakura Kokumai, who is Japanese-American, was accosted while training in a park in California. The man, who allegedly shouted racist slurs at her, was arrested for making threats.

Miami led by 17 points during the first period and held a 58-56 advantage at half-time only to trail 86-78 going into the

He was forced off 42 minutes into his first home start for Barca and was taken to hospital for cardiological evaluation last Saturday, Indian Express reported. According to Catalunya Radio, the Argentine may retire with the issue more complicated that was initially expected. He is reportedly suffering from a cardiac arrhythmia which is not benign and seriously puts his career in risk. He is out and for the next three months the effectiveness of the treatment will be evaluated to determine his recovery process.”

Djokovic, Tsitsipas in Green Group at Nitto ATP Finals TURIN, NOV 12 (IANS): Serbian world No. 1 Novak Djokovic is in the ‘Green Group’ of the 2021 Nitto ATP Finals -- the elite yearend tournament for the top-eight tennis players in the world -- along with Greece’s world No.3 Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev of Russia and Norwegian Casper Ruud. Medvedev, who defeated Djokovic at the 2021 US Open and stalled his progress to the calendar Grand Slam, had claimed the title last year with a perfect 5-0 record, including a historic hat-trick of wins over the world’s Top-3 players -- Djokovic, Spain’s Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem of Austria -- a first in the 50-year history of the event.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2021

Brazil beat Colombia to qualify for WC SAO PAULO, NOV 12 (AP): Brazil became the first South American team to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar — with several matches in hand and more than a year before the tournament begins in Qatar. Lucas Paqueta scored Brazil’s only goal in the 72nd minute in a 1-0 win over Colombia, putting the Selecao 18 points ahead of fourth-place Chile, which can add only 15 points from its five remaining matches. Sixth-place Uruguay can still total Brazil’s 34 points, but it will face Chile in the last round of qualifying, which makes it mathematically impossible for both of them to overtake the leader. The top four teams in South America earn direct entry to the World Cup. “This is the result of great work we started way back,” Paquetá said after the match in Sao Paulo, which provided few opportunities for both teams. “I cried of happiness (after scoring) because of this moment I am living at the national team and at my club Lyon. This came from a lot of joy, joy for this work well done,” Paquetá added. His goal came after

Marquinhos found Neymar in the middle of the Colombia defense. Neymar quickly passed to Paquetá, who beat goalkeeper David Ospina with a low crossed shot that ended in the right corner of the Colombian goal. It was one of the few opportunities created by Brazil during the match. Brazil sealed its qualification by giving coach Tite his 50th win along with 12 draws and five defeats. Tite took over Brazil in the middle of qualifying for the World Cup in Russia in 2018. Also on Thursday, third-place, Ecuador beat last-place Venezuela 1-0 with a goal by Piero Hin-

capie, and Chile had a key 1-0 victory at Paraguay thanks to an own goal by Antony Silva after a corner kick. Brazil has 11 wins in 12 matches — its match with second-place Argentina in September was bizarrely suspended after seven minutes of play because of concerns from authorities over breaches of COVID-19 protocols. FIFA has not yet decided whether it will be replayed. Ecuador (20 points) follows its two major rivals in South American qualifiers, with Chile, Colombia and Uruguay tied with 16 points. The Chileans skip ahead for now on goal difference.

Germany thrash Liechtenstein 9-0 in WC qualifier BERLIN, NOV 12 (AFP): Hansi Flick became the first coach to win his first six games in charge of Germany last night as his side crushed ten-man Liechtenstein 9-0 in a low-stakes World Cup qualifier. Having already secured qualification for next year’s tournament in Qatar, Germany smashed nine past Group J’s bottom side to hand Flick a record-breaking sixth successive win since taking the reins in August. The previous best start by a Germany coach was made by Flick’s longserving predecessor Joachim Loew, who won his first five games before a draw against Cyprus in 2006. Germany began without several key players after defender Niklas Suele tested positive for coronavirus earlier in the week and Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala were sent into quarantine as a precaution. Yet the depleted hosts were able to cruise as the visitors imploded early in the first half. Liechtenstein’s Jens Hofer was sent off after just nine minutes when he caught Leon Goretzka in the neck with a high foot. Ilkay Gundogan converted

the resulting penalty, before Germany scored three goals in four minutes to make it 4-0 by the 25th minute. Daniel Kaufmann turned a Christian Gunter cross into his own net and Leroy Sane linked up with Leon Goretzka to slot a neat finish into the bottom corner. Sane then set up Marco Reus with a tap-in moments

later, and added another shortly after the break before another flurry of goals in the last 15 minutes. Thomas Mueller prodded the ball home from close range for Germany’s sixth, and Wolfsburg’s own Ridle Baku delighted the home crowd with a curling finish in off the post. Mueller added another

five minutes from time, and the rout ended with another own goal as Maximilian Goeppel deflected a Baku cross into his own net.

1983 WC hero Kirmani encourages budding Meghalaya cricketers

Syed Kirmani (File) Correspondent

SHILLONG, NOV 12: The key to India’s victory against giants of cricket, the West Indies, at the 1983 World Cup was their self-belief and not being overawed by the opposition, Syed Kirmani, who was part of that champion side, told a group of young Meghalaya cricketers, boys and girls, at an impromptu function here on Friday. Kirmani was visiting Shillong for a separate programme but wanted to call in at the Meghalaya Cricket Association at Polo Ground where he shared his wisdom, warm smile and charm with the players and MCA and Shillong Cricket Association officials. Kirmani, who was the Indian wicketkeeper during that historic World Cup victory at Lord’s, was welcomed by MCA Secre-

tary Gideon Kharkongor in the presence of other senior MCA and SCA officials, such as Peter Macdonald Kharsawian, Peter Jarman Lamare, Saibal Dasgupta, Dhrubajyoti Thakuria, Dister Marbaniang, Robert Dkhar and others. Speaking to the players, Kirmani, who featured in 88 Tests for India, said that playing in 1983 against West Indian greats Malcolm Marshall, Viv Richards and Michael Holding, it was imperative that India not put their opponents on too high a pedestal. “You have to believe in your own capabilities and strengths and do not be afraid because then you are halfway out,” Kirmani said, while also emphasising the importance of practice, be it in cricket or in academics. He also urged the youngsters present to always maintain the spirit of cricket and was pleased to learn that Meghalaya had finished second in the Plate Group of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20, saying that it was good that the “BCCI has acknowledged the eastern sector” of the country by bringing all states under its umbrella.
