      Movie Info

Sworn to preserve intergalactic order, the Green Lantern Corps has existed for centuries. Its newest recruit, Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds), is the first human to join the ranks. The Green Lanterns have little regard for humans, who have thus far been unable to harness the powers of the ring each member wears. But Jordan, a gifted and cocky test pilot, may be the corps' only hope when a new enemy called Parallax threatens the universal balance of power.

So far from what I usually watch, but still enjoyable super hero flick, not on the level of Batman, but still enjoyable. 4 stars

This movie isn't bad; It's very pretty, but it's just dumb and never connects. I figured this movie's problem out about halfway through: none of the characters have sound motivation for anything they do. Nothing anyone does makes sense, because this damn movie never took the time to hash out why anyone would behave the way they do. Are all Lantern recruits treated with such hostility by Sinestro and their trainers? How did the guardian who became Paralax make the jump between trying to harness fear to becoming an evil fear engine? Why is Hector on his side? How do you become physically infected by an abstract concept, and how do you then throw it into the sun? If the screenwriters had taken a little more time to answer questions like these, this movie might not have lost everybody. Those questions are important, you guys. Ryan Reynolds is endearing, but only to a point.

A casual observer might be led to believe that one of the reasons why "Green Lantern" is such a misfire has to do with the casting of Ryan Reynolds in the lead as cocky test pilot Hal Jordan and would not be entirely wrong. Like I have said before, he lacks the necessary gumption to play the hero. And as Katherine Curtis pointed out, he would have been better off playing another Green Lantern, Guy Gardner. Plus, Angela Bassett being cast as Amanda Waller is nowhere near as cool as it sounds. That leaves it to Peter Sarsgaard to run away with the movie, even under that makeup. To be honest, the flaws with "Green Lantern" go deeper than the acting in its story of a man who needs therapy much more than a green power ring. Those daddy issues(and he's not the only one) are so bad that he has flashbacks at the worst possible moment of testing a new fighter jet. You wonder why when nobody asks if he is okay after the crash. Compare that to the series premiere of "Farscape" when Crichton is simply told by his father to be his own kind of hero. Along those same lines, "Green Lantern" would have been better off starting on earth, not only because of less reliance on shaky special effects, but also to let Jordan be the audience's eyes as they are opened to the wonders of the universe. That really does not matter much when you consider this is the rare super hero movie that is too geeky by introducing Parallax who in the comics is something of a very convoluted plot device, employed primarily to write Hal Jordan out of and back into the comics.(Looooooooooooooonng story.) Since simple is the best way to go in introductory chapters, a good versus evil storyline would have been the way to go instead of the whole willpower and fear thing.

I'm not familiar with the underlying comic book character so I can't comment on the film's similarities. That said, I didn't think it was as bad as some people were saying. I enjoyed it and would watch it again. Then again, it's hard not to watch any movie with Ryan Reynolds in it....
