Hi Pete
You've posted in the Google Maps Help Forum, but your question is about Google Earth satellite imagery. Although both Maps and Earth generally have the same imagery, sometimes it is different.
To fully help with your question though, it would be useful to know if there's a particular area that you're concerned about.
Please provide more details, and please let me know if you're talking specifically about Google Maps or Google Earth.
Thanks
-BeadieJay

Hi BeadieJay..
I was thinking of Google Earth when I posted my question.
I'm not referring to one specific area though - I am talking in general. However as one example, the imagery where I live, and specifically over my house is far less clear than it used to be. I am assuming Google have decided to monetise this product and have have reduced the quality to encourage people to pay for a more detailed service.

There's a really interesting blog post that talks about how Google gets its imagery. The post is from 2009, but it's still relevant, as it gives background info about the satellites and satellite providers.

Thanks for that link BeadieJay. However it doesn't give me the answer my question. I'm still wanting to find out why the image quality has reduced so drastically in recent years.

I don't know the answer to that and I highly doubt that Google would ever comment on such a thing - as they are well known for not commenting!!
I'm sorry I couldn't help you - maybe you'll find the answer elsewhere on the web. Google doesn't read the posts in this forum and we're all volunteers, so have no access to the inner secrets.

Pete, the places I look the imagery just keeps getting better, which would correspond to the fact that the technology is getting better.
If you're looking at a particular place that is getting worse, you need to realize that most of the imagery Google buys was commissioned by someone else. Commissioning an aerial flight is very expensive as compared to buying the results, but the commissioner gets to decide flight path, date (including season), and just how finely detailed they want the imagery to be. More detailed costs more; it requires better cameras and more passes.
Commissioning a flight normally requires a business reason to do so. That is going to dictate how much detail is necessary.
