The writing in this book is excellent. It is hard to believe what working men and women suffered and yet persevered. Now I have to go back and reread many parts. At some points I had to stop reading because the stories were too upsetting. It seems human cruelty has no bounds.

If you are someone who cares about the history and the future of workers freedom, this book is a must! A very comprehensive history of the labor movement in North America!

Learn how organized labor sacrificed and paved the way for better lives

If you have watched "The Men who Built America" on the history channel, you are aware of how labor has been mistreated since the birth of free enterprise. This book traces some of labor's struggles for fairness in this country. I was surprised that little has changed over the past century. The book is somewhat difficult to read because of the antiquated language and the type size. If you find that it is too much, I recommend Howard Zinn's "History of the American People."

After all this time this is STILL the BEST single volume history of the US Labor Movement.
As a labor activist and member in several major unions and a former PoliSci / History student.
I recommend this to anyone that wants to know about the REAL struggle by workers for social justice.
This is not the sanitized and watered down versions you get in textbooks.
For some serious study or a one stop primer or a solid informative read this book is a must.

A great read and so important for people to know about today; what working people went through to try to get decent lives for themselves and their children. As unions are being lied about and vilified in the press, here is the true story of the rise of the Labor Union Movement in the US.
