Yesterday I acquired my new Glock 34 Gen 5. Today I was able to sneak away for a quick 100+ round function check range session. Here’s my initial thoughts review:

I’ll start with the mags. These are my first Gen5 mags with the orange follower and extended baseplate. Here is some comparison pics, old style on top and right:

Not a huge difference, but it’s small refinements that I like. Some people berate it, but I like and prefer the high viz follower. At a quick glance it’s easy to tell if there’s a malfunction, loaded, or empty. The extended floor plate is a nice touch, but honestly, it’s a nothing burger. With the half moon cut out now gone, the extended floor plate does literally nothing. One of the things that irked me about my 19X is that it would not accept these mags. I like them, but I’m not about to run out and buy all new mags. The leftovers from my Gen4 34 will work just fine.
Also along with the mags I really like the Gen5 flared magwell. I have played around with tilting the mags generously when inserting and that new feature helps funnel the mag for a quick and positive insertion. This was a good addition to the Gen5 feature lineup.

I first noticed there wasn’t a lot of anti-seize like in other Glocks I’ve purchased new. However, I did what I normally do with my brand new Glocks: I inspected it with a standard field strip. Not seeing any issues I proceeded to shoot. And it shot. Boringly reliably. Nothing more to say there.
The trigger alone sold me on Gen5. About a year ago when I tried my very first Gen5 that I saw in the sporting goods store, I pulled the trigger, and instantly new my Gen4’s were not going to be mine for much longer. My particular 34 came with the dot (•) connector rated at 5.5 lbs on the box. This is a great trigger. I will drop in a minus (-) that I have to try it, but I don’t know if it will stay. Seriously, the Gen5 trigger is the best stock Glock trigger of any generation. I know that doesn’t mean much to many ears, based on how much people tweak earlier Gen triggers, but Glock is on to something with this new trigger setup. Again, this feature alone made me a Gen5 believer.

The Gen5 also features a new type of barrel. Many claim it’s more accurate and I would not call them liars. I’m sure there’s numbers on paper to back up these claims. I did find that when I concentrated and did what I was supposed to, the target would get a single ragged hole. However, my Gen4 34 could do the same. Then again, if it gives me a 1% advantage, I’ll take it.

The infamous Gen5 Glock smile speedily appeared on my barrel. I just think it’s smiling back at me smiling at it!

I didn’t do a ton of presentations, but the few that I did have made wear marks. Some people dislike this. I’m more “meh” about it. I like having nice things and them looking nice, but I do think a gun that shows legitimate signs of use is a badge of honor. I know when I see a shooter with a legitimately well used gun at an IDPA event, they get a couple street cred points from me. Yes, this finish does not hold up like past finishes. It’s not a deal breaker for me. I’m good with it. If they went back to stronger old finishes, I’d be good with that, too. I’m just going to say that I didn’t buy this to look pretty. It’s a gun, not a dollhouse.
I like front serrations. I really like them. I know some people will groan and grimace, but I am a press check guy. I like to visually see brass. The front serrations aid this safely. It’s a feature I’m glad to see, I’ve wanted it for a while.

Over all, very happy with it. Compared to my 19X, the recoil is smoother, less snappy. I think that’s it. This gun can be summed up by one word: smooth. The grip with no finger grooves? Smooth. The new Gen5 trigger? Smooth. Long slide recoil? Smooth. The feel and look of the finish? Smooth. Functionality and reliability? Smooth. I could go on, but I think I’ve made my point.
Bottom line: Granted, this is just an initial function check, but indications being what they are, this Glock 34 Gen5 is an ultimate handgun that meets and exceeds my needs and wants. If you’re at all considering one, take this as my unbridled support and recommendation to do so. You won’t be disappointed.

I shot at roughly 7 yards. I could get ragged hole groups, so say 1” to 1 1/2” groups, both hands and strong hand. Weak hands, imma mess and is certainly an area to improve.
The targets got pretty shot up doing all sorts of different drills as I never replaced them during shooting. So two different targets got shot with about 125 rounds...
The 1-10? Uff da. I will say 10, for my intended purposes. That being IDPA and HD. It will do those two things, plus be a fun range blaster, in spades.

Nice review, great pics.

Great review, and congrats. My G34 MOS didn't have a 5.5lb trigger. I was under the impression they all had the 4.5lb trigger. Mine does (and clearly states it on the box). As I look at the Glock website, it lists the Gen4 G34, Gen4 G34 MOS, and Gen5 G34 MOS as ALL having 24N triggers (what we normally call the 5.5lb trigger, which technically converts to 5.4 lbs, actually 5.3954 lbs).

So my questions remain... how much better is the Gen5 G34 than what I have? I am really happy with the 4.5lb trigger compared to normal Glocks. Is the Gen5 G34 better yet, or pretty similar? Not that you would know, but instead of clearing up my questions, I am more baffled by Glock's stated triggers on their website than I was before! You state your is a lower pull weight, but Glock's website shows 24N, which doesn't match what I thought to be true.

Glad to see you love it! A reduced quality finish does bother me more than you (not as much that it wears, but the simple fact that it was better and could be better, but they choose NOT to sink the cost into doing that). Not a big deal, just an annoying, penny-pinching move.

I really love the concept of the orange follower. It isn't a big deal, but you can visually inspect it a lot easier. Some may pooh-pooh it, but I am going to be taking my daughter to the range and showing her how to shoot, and visually seeing a slide locked open and showing orange will absolutely help me teach and guide her quickly and precisely. I like it, and your images of the mags seem to show a bit better quality (less flashing, whether due to better design, better QC, or simply newer molds that aren't worn, we don't know). But they do look nicer. Especially with the rounded front. It just looks cleaner and sleeker.

Congrats on the new G34. And thanks for the review!

Do you have a 34 in Gen3 or 4? Is it red label? Blue label 34’s overwhelmingly come with 5.5 connectors. It’s a blue label thing. Maybe they consider them more duty type guns and the lighter trigger is omitted. Not always though, as my BL Gen4 34 came with a 4.5 and even said that on the box. Most red and white label 34’s come with the minus (-) 4.5 lb connectors.

Good review, I enjoyed reading it. I wish more people would do write ups just like this. Thanks for posting! What I have noticed with the Gen5 finish on the slide is that it is very finger printy but they wipe away pretty easy. I am thinking what you called wear marks with the few press checks you did with the front serrations would wipe away. Unless maybe you were holstering frequently or something. I personally love having the front serrations for press checks.

***UPDATE***

Another range session and first match have been shot with this 34. I ordered some upgrades and parts for my 34, but most did not arrive in time for the match. Most notably, the sights. They arrived today I installed them
immediately. They went on easy and true. Exactly what I wanted!

I am a big of Ameriglo Agents on my 43s for EDC. On my full-size guns I usually go Trijicon, specifically the HD XRs. Orange is my favorite color and becomes part of my internal monologue when shooting (“What’s your favorite color? Orange.” This helps me slow down and focus on the front sight in matches, it works for me.). The Agents and HD XRs share the features of a U-notch and outlined front sight. This really works for me. I was beyond pleased when I learned that Trijicon makes an HD XR version for the Glock MOS line. This also keeps it pretty natural as I rotate from my EDCs to my range guns, the sight picture are down right the same.
Transparency Technology Electronics Electronic device

I also ordered some goodies from Glock that showed up today. A new Gen5 maintenance mat, a parts tray, and a threaded barrel. I currently don’t have a need for the threaded barrel as I don’t run a compensator nor suppressor. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t want to eventually. I’ve learned that the threaded barrels from Glock tend to dry up. I’ll just tuck it away for when I need it.
The match I participated in was a success. I placed second out seven. Most importantly it was a good time. The sights didn’t arrive before the match but I do keep some extra parts on hand. As such, I was able to slip in a minus connector and maritime spring cups.
I wasn’t sure that the minus connector would bring much to the table, it didn’t in my 19X. A year ago I added a minus connector to my 19X. The trigger was already smooth and solid, but I have always added minus connectors to my previous guns to produce better results. However, it did lighten my 19X trigger, but I won’t say it made it better. In fact, I ended up removing the minus connector and going back to the dot connector. I found that was preferable. Needless to say, my expectations in my 34 weren’t high. Still I dropped in a minus connector because I just had to see what it would be like. I’m glad I did. Where it didn’t make a big or positive difference in my 19X, it did in my 34. Not drastic, but enough that it will stay in. Don’t get me wrong, the Gen5 trigger with a dot connector is really nice and perhaps it falls to just how each gun will take. None the less, my 34 is good to go with a newly installed minus connector.

My 34 is not only my completion gun, but it’s also my bedside HD gun. This is its current configuration for that task. I look at it and giggle a bit to myself and think of Robocop’s “Auto 9.”

Again, everything is indicating I made the best choice for me. I don’t want to say I love this 34, but I love it. It’s a blast and just keeps getting sweeter.

I have been running a Gen5 34 in USPSA Carry Optics for a year or so.
Triarc Systems frame work & silicon carbide grip.
Johnny Glock race trigger ~3lbs
5MOA Trijicon SRO sitting on a C&H precision plate.
Trijicon fiber optic sights
8 mags with Taran tactical +5/6 baseplates

I run this gun hard and it is very solid.

I just picked up my new Glock 34 Gen 5 and like it overall except the trigger - it's a solid 7 pounds, absolutely terrible! I know it will lighten up after burning a lot of rounds through it however given the scarcity of ammo I'm not inclined to do that. I'm looking for a Glock gunsmith to perform some work on the trigger to include aftermarket parts as needed. I was hoping for at least a 5.5 pound trigger pull however that's not happening. I have owned the following Glocks and everyone has had a much better trigger than this one, 17, 21, 26, 30SF and gen 3 34. Very disappointed in this trigger.

That sounds like an incorrect assembly.

Just today, picked-up my latest, and possibly last, Glocks this afternoon. ”Blue Ribbon” Glock 34 Gen 5’s, with Olight Baldr laser light Pro Max 13 designators, Ameriglo GL-329 Suppressor Sights, Trijicon 5MOA RMR red dot sights, 8 Gen 5 17rd magazines, 4 Gen 5 24rd magazines, 2 severely FBI canted paddle holsters (L & R), Timney 3lb. Pull triggers (Glock Alpha Competition Series), and first set of dual magazine pouches. Will be calling Glock Store for more tomorrow. Almost forgot, both pieces came with 3, each, of Gen 5 magazines. That gives me 14 17rd magazines, and 4 24rd magazines. All Gen 5. Getting back to the 3lb. triggers, they are super, infinitely better than any previous generation Glock. I’m a happy camper, and Gaston Glock has, for me, hit a grand slam home run…
