Decidí comprarla ya que no había tenido oportunidad de ver esta peli, la restauración y el HDR son decentes, la película es entretenida, producción y actuación destacables. Mi consejo es cómprala si no la has visto de lo contrario puedes aprovechar tu dinero en una película más actual. Un punto extra ya que me incluyeron el slipcover, la mayoría de las películas que he comprado ya no lo tienen.

"Gladiator", "Blade Runner", "Black Hawk Down", and "Alien" are the 4 essential Ridley Scott-directed films that film lovers should have in their collection for the sheer mastery that Scott and his filmmaking collaborators are able to achieve. (Others you might consider include "The Duelists", "American Gangster", "White Squall", and "Kingdom of Heaven").

The color, detail, sets, the digital reconstruction of the Coliseum and other parts of Rome, the costumes, Hans Zimmer score, and impressive performances by Russell Crowe, the late Oliver Reed, Connie Nielsen, Djimon Hounsou, the other supporting cast, but especially Joaquin Phoenix - make "Gladiator" a film that is enjoyable to watch repeatedly and have in your permanent collection.

In case, you may be wondering - the Roman Emperor Commodus was indeed murdered by a gladiator (or wrestler, really) who was part of plot to do away with him...so, yes, the historical circumstances may have been embellished a bit (and other aspects of the film) to make Russell Crowe's character, a Roman general, more heroic than actual fact, but hey...it's the movies. Go with it.

The commentary track featuring Scott and Crowe is also quite interesting and occasional insightful even as Crowe points out a few minor flaws in the film.

The digital stream of the film (shown in Dolby Vision for those with an Apple TV set top box) is also quite impressive and shows little difference between the 4K UHD disc viewing in HDR for detail or richness of color. I've viewed the streaming version on my Sony 4k TV, a Samsung 1080p TV, and an older Philips 720p TV and the image is equally crisp and rich in color on each. If you want to test this out, check out the close-up of Russell Crowe's hand as he picks up the metal arrowhead from the dirt in the Coliseum.

One of the best films ever made. A wise purchase.

I confess that the decision to eventually see this film that is The Gladiator with money made from my current job was actually a spontaneous decision that I made by somewhere between 7am to 8 am this Saturday morning less than a few hours after waking up for the day. Though I finally got finished with seeing this film much later in the day (by 440 pm). I’m intuitively aware that I’m well outside the projected main target audience for the Gladiator. However, I am very happy that I took a chance on watching The Gladiator for multiple reasons: One reason: the main protagonist of the film Maximus (Russell Crowe) shows self confidence and bravery in facing multiple events in his life that try as he might to completely steer the course of his life, it seems that destiny has other plans. However, he ends up evolving and becoming stronger emotionally, physically, and spiritually in his new life. Along the way he encounters multiple people who study andor learn from him in some way including fellow gladiators Juba (Djimon Hounsou) and Hagen (Ralf Moller). Maximus’s character development and growth is further accelerated with the stories and involvement that he has with the characters Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). Lucilla has a son Lucius (Spencer Treat Clark) in the film who is similar in age to Maximus’s late son. Maximus and Commodus became connected from the beginning of the film because they both have significant roles/parts involving Commodus’s father Marcus Aurelius (Richard Clark). The character of Commodus and Maximus were kind of set up to have a complicated relationship dynamic from the start because Marcus Aurellus admits to his son Commodus some of the reasons why he admires Maximus and Commodus is naturally far from accepting andor happy at such a confession with Commodus even admitting the multiple years that he has tried to win his father’s approval. I am tempted to say more though I logically know I must refrain to be considerate to the readers who are looking at this review and want to see this brilliant film for themselves.
