A preview for the upcoming Netflix series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story shows the headstrong noblewoman meeting her match with soon-to-be husband, King George III.

As part of a smorgasbord of reveals during Netflix TUDUM today, production company Shondaland and the streaming service gave fans their first look at the Bridgerton prequel. India Amarteifio plays a young Queen Charlotte, taking over the role in the new series from Bridgerton's Golda Rosheuvel. In the clip, Charlotte tries to ascertain the best way to climb over the royal garden wall in order to escape her wedding to King George (Corey Mylchreest), unaware that she's asking the man himself to assist her.

Queen Charlottes Original and Untold Story

Netflix announced the prequel in May 2021, just months after Bridgerton's monumental first season premiere. Charlotte plays a central role in the series, leading the Ton as its respected leader after her marriage to the king allows a grand shift in class order from which many of the kingdom's residents now benefit. Despite her role in the show, Queen Charlotte did not appear in Julia Quinn's Bridgerton books on which Netflix based the series. This fact means her story in the spin-off is wholly original.

Throughout the first two seasons, Bridgerton hinted at Queen Charlotte's deep love for her husband and devotion to her role as the leader of England and Ireland, especially in the wake of her husband's declining health and mental illness. She shares a particularly poignant moment showcasing both with Edwina Sharma when the latter's nuptials become spoiled by the realization her fiancé, Anthony Bridgerton, is in love with her sister, Kate. As Edwina seems set to marry him despite her humiliation, Queen Charlotte, inspired by her own love story, gives her the courage to say no and seek the life she wants, not that which she thinks she's duty-bound to accept.
