Sir Geoff Hurst , 77, made his name as a striker, skyrocketing to fame and becoming a national treasure after England won the 1966 World Cup final. The hat-trick hero began his career at West ham United where he scored 242 goals before he moved on to Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion, Cork Celtic and then the Seattle Sounders. But how did the footballer incur the wrath of his wife for not extending her a particular invitation?

Sir Geoff Hurst is considered to be one of the greatest British footballers after he helped bring home tEngland’s only World Cup win in 1966.

The 77-year-old was recognised for his achievements in his inclusion in The Champions statue in London which commemorates the 1966 World Cup winning footballers.

The statue also features Martin Peters, Bobby Moore and Ray Wilson.

Sir Geoff’s contribution was commemorated in 2004 when he was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame.

He is also one of a handful of footballers to have been knighted.

Sir Geoff married his wife Judith in 1964, two years before his hat-trick World Cup win.

In 1966, England were competing to win the championship against West Germany.

England took home the top prize, winning the final match 4 - 2.

After the extra time victory, the footballers were whisked off to a swanky banquet dinner at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington, West London.

However, wives were not invited and instead ate at a restaurant down the road.

Sir Geoff joked that wife Judith has never forgiven him for not being invited to the 1966 World Cup final banquet.

He told The Sun: “We had a banquet here for all four of the semi-finalists’ teams — and uninvited were our wives!

“They were in a small ante-room somewhere else in the hotel and — I have only heard this recently — they were given a gift...a pair of scissors!

“As you husbands know, when your wife isn’t invited to a function she thought she should have been at, she reminds you for the next 50 years!”

Sir Geoff said: “Nothing was really organised for later that night.

“The Playboy Club had invited us out. I decided, ‘It’s Saturday night, we’re in London, we’ve played a game of football, I’ve got to organise something’.”

The prize-winning footballers decided to visit a club in Hanover owned by female impersonator Danny La Rue.

The hat-trick footballer added: “ Danny La Rue, the female impersonator, had a club in Hanover Square and I’d been there a few months before. It was good entertainment and Ronnie Corbett was working there, too.

“So I arranged it with a few of the lads. Alan Ball came along, Martin Peters and John Connelly. So there are lovely memories of us enjoying the night.”

Judith and Geoff now live together in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

Together the couple went on to have three daughters.

Sir Geoff will be returning to the big screen on Saturday when he feature on with Bradley Walsh at 6.15pm on .
