Gelsenkirchen (German pronunciation: [ˌɡɛlzənˈkɪʁçən]) is a ceety in North Rhine-Westphalie, Germany. It is locatit in the northren pairt o the Ruhr aurie. Its population in 2006 wis c. 267,000.

Gelsenkirchen wis first documentit in 1150, but it remained a smaa veelage till the 19t century, when the Industrial Revolution led tae the growth o the entire aurie. In 1840, when the minin o coal began, 6000 inhabitants livit in Gelsenkirchen; in 1900 the population haed increased tae 138,000.
