Vision

Education is the key! We in Gelsenkirchen are only too aware of that. We are therefore always determined to provide the best possible, earliest education for all. Only as a learning city can Gelsenkirchen begin to resolve the substantial challenges it faces.

Policies, plan and implementation

Sustainability and health
The city is oriented towards the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goals. Participation structures have been created in line with these goals, such as laboratories and task forces on various topics (such as fair trade) as well as training programmes to facilitate sustainable development.
Equity and inclusion
Particularly at the neighbourhood level, cooperation has been intensified in order to shape the city into one which is accessible to all. For example, people with support needs are included in neighbourhood design processes.
Decent work and entrepreneurship
The basic idea underpinning the learning city of Gelsenkirchen is ‘future education’. Knowledge is ageing faster and faster in today's society which means furnishing citizens with learning and creative competencies is important to prepare them for the future of work.

Good practices

Kolleg21
Established in 2015, Kolleg21 coordinates the lifeworld-oriented research projects of young students. They work in practical projects that are based on the concept of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
Nienhausen Water Laboratory
The Nienhausen Water Laboratory has been developed into an extracurricular place of learning with a focus on water. The laboratory enables people of all age groups to learn using all of their senses.
