Gerald Lynn Newton

DRYDEN, VA - Gerald Lynn Newton, 68, of Dryden, VA, ran into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, September 30th , 2021 with his family by his side. Gerald was born on September 10th , 1953, at Lee General Hospital in Pennington Gap, VA to John Paul & Hattie Cleyo Newton. He was the oldest of their 10 children. Gerald, a retired coal-miner of over 40 years, was a hard-working, kind-hearted man, who always provided for his family. His strong work ethic remained with him throughout his life. Gerald, along with the mother of his children, Mary Mosley Newton of Dryden, VA, raised 3 remarkable children, Jared, Bradley, and Stacie. His children meant more to him than anything, something he proudly and often mentioned. Gerald was a strong, kind, and loving father, grand-father, and friend to many.

Dean Adams, 77

Dean Adams, age 77, of Totz, KY, passed from this life on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, at the Landmark of Elkhorn City Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Born in Letcher County on November 16, 1943, to William and Marlie Ison Adams, Dean graduated from Whitesburg High School then moved to Harlan County, where he spent most of his life. He served in the United States Army and spent several years in Vietnam. While in the Army, he received numerous honors: National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal.

FT. BLACKMORE, VA – Rebecca Jane “Becky” Lane, 51, went to be in the arms of Jesus on Monday, September 27, 2021 at Lonesome Pine Medical Center. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 3, 2021 at the Brickey family Cemetery in Fort Blackmore, VA. Those wishing to attend the graveside are asked to meet at the cemetery at 1:45 PM.


Angela Faye Johnson Mullins age 55, from Coeburn, VA went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at Norton Community Hospital. She was born August 25, 1968 in Scottsburg, IN and was the daughter of the late Clayburn Baker.- Preceded also in death by her sister: Melda Peters. – She is survived by her husband: Earl Dean Collins of Barwick, KY. – Her mother: Cora Baker of Barwick, KY. Bobby Dwayne Boardwine, 45, of Vicco, died Saturday, September 25, 2021 at Greg & Noreen Wells Care Center. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 28 at Engle-Bowling Funeral Home with Kenny Smith officiating. Burial followed in the Mountain Mission Memorial Gardens, Avawam. Arrangements were under the direction of Engle-Bowling Funeral Home of Hazard.

Carter Baker

DUFFIELD, VA - Landen Carter Baker, 82, Duffield, VA passed away, Monday, September 27, 2021, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, September 30, 2021, at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Riley Boy officiating.


William “Wes” Rasnic, 54, of Pennington Gap, VA passed away on Friday, September 24, 2021. Wes was a retired coal miner of 31 years working side by side with other miners that gained his trust and respect due to their hard work of “getting the job done”. Coal miners are a unique type of man and Wes demonstrated that on every shift. He truly enjoyed the “tall tales” exchanged on the daily mantrip in and out of the mines but knew it had been a good ride and time to get off. As he walked to his truck that last day, both mine foremans expressed their deep appreciation and thanked him for his hard work. We will miss you. He gave them a thumbs up and continued walking. The day he drove away from Deep Mines #44 he left behind a job he loved and many friends, but they were never far from his thoughts.


James H. (Jimmy) Fawbush, 67, of Norton, died Monday, September 27, 2021, at Ft. Sanders Select Specialty Hospital in Knoxville, TN. Jimmy was the first-born son to the late James C. and Anne Fields Fawbush. Jimmy was injured at the age of 15 playing football for the Burton Raiders. He was determined to live his life to the fullest. After graduating John I. Burton in 1973, he earned his Associate Degree from Mountain Empire Community College and later graduated from St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, SC with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
