Sony was planning to sell 15M PS5s, and they reconfirmed that figure when Bloomberg reported 11M, but now Sony has cut their sales target in half to 7.6M, and its not like the PS4 has been taking up all their resources because they stupidly shifted away it

Nintendo OTOH has increased their Switch sales target from 24M to 26.5M

Sony was reportedly originally planning to make 15 million PS5 consoles available around the world by March 31, 2021, but that has been reduced to 11 million.

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps5-sony-denies-launch-supply-of-consoles-has-been-reduced/1100-6482165/

Sony has reached out to GamesIndustry.biz with the following statement denying the Bloomberg report:
“While we do not release details related to manufacturing, the information provided by Bloomberg is false," the statement reads.
"We have not changed the production number for PlayStation 5 since the start of mass production."

https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2020-09-15-sony-reportedly-cuts-ps5-production-by-4m-units

The company said it is on-track to meet its forecast of 7.6 million units shipped by March 31, 2021.

https://www.gematsu.com/2021/02/ps5-shipped-4-5-million-units-in-2020-ps4-shipments-top-115-million

Nintendo altered its previously announced forecast that it will sell 24 million Switch units between April 2020 and March 2021 to 26.5 million units.

Wow. From 15 million to 7.6 million. That’s actually a pretty dramatic cut to forecasted sales. Is there significant difficulties in the manufacturing line or something?

What's the catch? Obviously the assembly line has been severely compromised even more than we already knew.

Well, surely pandemic is creating supply constraints in parts needed to build these, probably effecting costs of supplies as well, and this will be limiting production. I would be less concerned about growth of the install base, more worried if their supplies needed to build them becomes so strained it will increase production costs and increase their loss on units produced and sold. That aside, there appears to be no lack of enthusiasm from consumers, so that's a really big positive.

That's why I scoff at the idea I've heard from so many ponies who think that just because PS4 was such a huge success that PS5 will be as well. Nothing is guaranteed in this world, and that's exactly what Nintendo though before N64 came out because of the success of the SNES.

Reminds me of Sony with PS3 because of the success of the PS1/2.

What other reason would there be? It's selling out the second it's out. This is nothing like the PS3 where you could walk into a store and buy one, no problem.

@Chutebox: Yep. Sounds like it’s going to be awhile until people can somewhat reliably walk into a store to get one.

Yep. Many examples of companies who experience success and then letting it go to their heads, only to **** up the next time. Like 360 going to Xbox One, and Wii going to Wii U.

The people running Sony and Microsoft may be completely out of touch. I mean, they advertise 4K, ray tracing, and push out movie games, but they struggle to come anywhere close to the success of a Switch which does neither of those things. I wonder if the other two will ever "get it" that people want fun games.

Both Sony and Microsoft are a lot like most of the posters on this board: they can't see the forest for the trees, as it applies to what makes games fun.

Both consoles have been going downhill since their first release. The PS2 was a step down from the kind of fun the PS1 offered, and the 360 IMO didn't have the kind of impact the first one had. They've both just been continuing their downhill trends of trying to sell consoles based on hardware specs rather than good games. Case in point, both Sony and Microsoft just released their next gen consoles without launch titles, telling us the next gen hardware was about the specs, rather than the games they would offer. Sony and M$ are doing it all bass ackwards.

Does that mean Sony will also beg AMD to help them like MS did while Nintendo are laughing their way to the bank?

This is not a Sony specific issue, this is purely a supply side issue and it's impacting a plurality of global markets, whether it be electronics, building, or pretty much anything that relies on the output of primary industries.

@eoten: you do know both ps5/xsx are selling out the moment they're available but they're having shortages, right? This thread is completely alien from reality LMAO.

Consoles are having a hard time having units available, people, that's all.

What I find odd is the similar gaming market split between MS and Sony for next gen systems is similar to that of this gen, but both are selling as fast as they can make them. Anyhow, production all around (not just for Sony) seems hindered and I remember reading in last year there would be supply constraints of DDR6 and that frankly effects everyone, including Nvidia and AMD. Curious what this means, like if supplies goes to higher bidder, and if Sony keeps a 2:1 production lead does that mean they are paying up more for the constrained supply, while already taking a loss?

@eoten: The 360 had more of an impact than the original in every single way. Not sure how you can argue otherwise.

How so the numbers showed Switch selling 4 times as much as the PS5 worldwide, and it showed X-Series X/S being outsold 3:1 by PS5. Microsoft is not pumping these out as fast as the XB1 even they had more of those out at launch they are behind here maybe there trying to say hey look were sold out and try to be appear scarce and create fake demand.

OP, you're comparing how many Switches are manufactured during a period of 11 months (April 2020 - March 2021), to how many PS5s are manufactured during a period of 5 months (November 2020 - March 2021).

That's a terrible comparison.

That's like saying, "Isn't it so impressive that Apple can make more iPhones in one year than Samsung can make Galaxy phones in less than half a year?!?" No, it's not.

Doesn't matter me dude I'd take 200 dollar switch lite with gallons of great exclusive games that aren't movies over a 500 dollar giant PS5 or X-Series X to play old movie games on from last gen in 4k or whatever.

Maybe thats just me as an old gamer I dunno if im an oldschool old garde gamer or what.

I think the switch is way better buy right now and for the future and has higher demand even if ps5 had full stock everywhere I don't think the demand as high as the switch right now I just don't see it selling as much.

If my switch lite broken and I can only get one system id skip ps5 and x-series x and go switch lite again instantly. Thats just how I see it right now.

lol The consoles fly off the shelves the minute they even get put on the shelves. The problem isn't that they're not selling, the problem is(just like with PC components), the part suppliers right now are absolute garbage due to a shit ton of factors. In almost every category. TSMC can't make enough Ryzen CPUs or Radeon GPUs due to a limited amount of wafer space in their fabs and crazy high demand from so many companies for that wafer space, ram chips are on a shortage as well, cargo shipping is all fucked up because there's not as many airliner flights due to the lack of demand(which leads to cargo shipment delays(as companies use the cargo area on international airliner flights), and shit... even the little stuff that you wouldn't think of, like suppliers for simple SCREWS have been all fucked up cause they're still playing catch up because of factory lockdowns they can't get enough metal to make the screws, then also ship them in a timely manner for cheap. Etc

All it takes is 1 kink in the hose do f*ck up the flow of the water, and right now the hose has like 12 big ass kinks.

Try again inorder for the PS5 out selling Xbox 3:1 that would mean the xbox would have only sold 1.5 million, they have sold about 3.5 million.

@briguyb13: : Going from xbox360 to xbox one was a letdown, but it is nothing compared to the failure of the WiiU. Going from 100 million Wii sold to a pathetic 13 million WiiU. Now that's a stinker.

Anyway, the PS5 is doing fine, I'm sure.

These are some really weird times we're living in. When I call the stores or go in person they tell me they've not got a single system of any kind in stock, and refer me to the online store. You try to get a console online and the bots, used by scalpers, have bought up all the stock. Even old systems are super expensive through third party market places on Amazon and Walmart.com and eBay.

It's a wonder that any system is able to get regular sales this day and age.

And for the record: I'm not saying PS5 will fail. With the strong brand it has, and the quality exclusives it's going to have, it will at the very least stay afloat, but I don't expect it to do PS4 or PS2 numbers. I don't like seeing anyone fail.

@gym_lion: There are a lot of fun games on Playstation and Xbox, but Eoten does have a point that Microsoft and Sony always ADVERTISE great graphics (4k, 60 fps, ray tracing) but never great gameplay. Maybe they should sometimes just focus on bringing the fun of video games in focus in their advertising.
