Report: Newcastle interested in Gabriel Barbosa; Aston Villa keen

Newcastle United are interested in signing Gabriel Barbosa, while 90min reports that both Aston Villa and Wolves are also monitoring the Brazilian striker.

Barbosa seems to be linked with a move to the Premier League in every transfer window. He has been prolific since joining Flamengo, reaching three figures for goals for the club.

The Brazil international did not have the best time in Europe previously, failing to prove himself at Inter Milan. But he may soon get another chance on the continent.

90min reports that Wolves are looking to broker a deal for Barbosa in the coming days. But Newcastle and Aston Villa also want the 25-year-old – with the Magpies wanting the forward during the January transfer window.

The Magpies are yet to really get going in the summer window. But it seems to be a matter of time before they start making impressive signings, particularly after the success they enjoyed in January.

Barbosa would potentially be a risky signing. He clearly has the quality to score goals at a rapid rate. And he is a player with the technical ability to get fans out of their seats.

But his failure in Europe will act as a concern. There were question marks over his attitude. And it probably says something that, at 25, he has not yet secured another move back across the Atlantic.

Much may depend on what kind of fee Flamengo would demand for Barbosa. They wanted £40 million 12 months ago.

But he has not had the best start to the campaign, scoring three in 12 league appearances. So they may be more willing to compromise on a fee.

It is not the deal that will excite supporters of either Newcastle or Aston Villa the most in this window should anything happen. But it would certainly have the potential to be inspired.
