Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Ages 1-3. This appetizing alphabet book shows fruits and vegetables so juicy and alive, you'll wish they could jump off the page and into your mouth. Even vegetable haters will find it hard to resist the vibrantly colored collage illustrations, which make each item look fascinating and appealing. Long a favorite picture book, this title is now available in a smaller board book edition, just right for introducing toddlers to the mysteries of endive, kiwifruit and papaya. Booklist called the original "bright, bold... well designed."

From Publishers Weekly

"Apple to Zucchini, / come take a look. / Start eating your way / through this alphabet book." So begins this delectable feast of fruits and vegetables, in a diverse and plentiful array. Each turn of the page reveals a mouth-watering arrangement of foods: Indian corn, jalapeno, jicama, kumquat, kiwifruit and kohlrabi. The words are shown in capital and lowercase letters set in bold type for easy reading. At the end of the book, Ehlert provides a detailed glossary that includes pronunciation, botanical information, the origin and history of the particular plant and occasional mythological references, with a small watercolor picture to remind the reader of what the plant looks like. Ehlert's glorious watercolor collages are lively and enticing; as in her Growing Vegetable Soup , she presents the plant world in an appealing and easily accessible manner. Both parents and children will be encouraged to sample exotic new foods at mealtime. Ages 3-5.

Fun book! Arrived warped

Fun book! Arrived warped
My kids and I enjoyed this cute book. It was especially fun to look for fruits and vegetables that we have tasted before. However, I bought it to be a gift and it arrived warped. Not good for giving but ok to keep for our own bookshelf. I don't know what might have caused that, since I've received several books before in the same kind of packaging with no problem.

Gorgeous illustration to teach names of fruits/vegetables and colors. Vibrant! Good quality production.

My children love this colorful book, Eating the Alphabet, by Lois Ehlert. This book helps to educate children about the different fruits and vegetables for every letter of the alphabet. It has inspired my children to want to try new fruits and vegetables that they've never had before. We have also been able to identify fruits and vegetables in the produce section at the grocery store that we might have once overlooked. One of my daughters actually requested Brussels sprouts after reading this book for the first time. We made them, and while she didn't love them the first time she had them, she was proud to say that she tried them. After having eaten them many times now, she likes them, and I have to say we probably never would have tried Brussels sprouts in the first place if it wasn't for this book!
We love the artwork of Lois Ehlert and the bright, bold colors she uses. She makes everything look appetizing and as a result will encourage children I'm sure to try more fruits and vegetables!

I would give this book six stars if I could. We did baby-led weaning, and my child (22 months old) loves all fruits and vegetables. He also loves books, so a book about food was a huge hit. He loves flipping through the pages and naming all the foods. We also use the book whenever we introduce a new food.

The only downside is that a few foods are missing. You won’t find mushrooms or squash or dragonfruit. But otherwise the book has a great variety.

Lois Ehlert has a very unusual illustration style that isn't highly detailed or realistic. I love it, and my kids love it, but if you are looking for a book that helps young children identify produce, you might be surprised by the illustration style. I have no problem with a fanciful and even ethereal drawing for young kids - I think they can enjoy the beautiful colors on their own merit. I will agree with others that this book would be better suited as a large book, not a small board book, because the pages are very cluttered and a tad overwhelming. But my kids love it all the same, AND they can identify real produce in the store based on the illustrations in the book. They even can identify the unusual ones, like starfruit, and ones with complex names, like xigua and vegetable marrow. Don't underestimate kids!

My kids are almost 3 and 4.5, and they love ABC books and other Lois Ehlert books, so this holds their interest. I think most kids would sit and listen to an adult read each word closer to age 5 or 6. If I had a 1-3 year old, I would just give them the book to look through. The colors and shapes are enough at that age. A 3-4 year old could point to ones and ask, "What's that?" Or have fun identifying favorite foods in the book. But perhaps don't try reading it front to back until the child expresses clear interest.

A nice little, sturdy book introducing foods.
Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2015
Wow, I wish I had bought this book sooner! I think this is a very good book for teaching the letters because the letters are big but the names of the vegetables are small and unobtrusive. I think some alphabet books tend to be too wordy. When you look at the page you mainly see the letter P and then all the beautiful fruits and veggies.

The pictures are mouth-watering, diverse, and recognizable to my toddler. (They are much more beautiful in person than in the photos on the computer.) I hope it helps him be more interested in trying new foods. I try to tie in the pictures in the book with what we buy or look at in the grocery store.

Eating the Alphabet is a cute and educational book geared towards younger children but is an honest joy for anyone to read! I purchased this book as a gift for a niece and I am looking forward to reading it to her in person. The colors are vibrant and eye catching and the book is just long enough to keep their attention. I would purchase this product again.
