Agent 007 (Sean Connery) is back in the second installment of the James Bond series, this time battling a secret crime organization known as SPECTRE. A much more engaging outing for 007 than his first, From Russia with Love has much more character, energy, and even something resembling a conventional plot; although it all unfolds in a profoundly routine Cold War thriller, with a narrative that plods along at a slow pace in desperate need of some tightening up, but its extended set pieces of great action is still just as engaging as ever. Young's direction still isn't the best but Ted Moore's photography is still as sharp as ever, it helps that Connery is a little bit more comfortable in the role while the rest of the cast is populated by much more colourful characters including the always awesome Robert Shaw in the role of henchmen Red Grant. John Barry takes up composing duties for his first of many for the franchise, rarely delivering a bad score and his score here is no exception. While I still don't think Bond has quite hit his stride yet, the exotic and colourful flamboyance from the best of its successors is still missing, From Russia with Love remains plenty of fun and establishes an indomitable template for more adventures to come.
