About the Fresno County Superior Court

The Fresno County Superior Court, or alternatively the Superior Court of California, County of Fresno, has jurisdiction over Fresno County, the tenth most populous county in California. It serves approximately one million residents across the 6,011 square miles that make up Fresno County.

The Court’s mission is to “serve the community and enhance public trust and confidence in the administration of justice through the impartial and timely resolution of disputes, ensuring compliance with the law and court orders, and fostering a vital court-community relationship that promotes equal access to the courts.”

The Fresno County Superior Court operates out of seven different locations and is divided into the following nine divisions: Civil, Criminal, Family, Jury Service, Juvenile, Probate, Small Claims, Traffic, and Appeals.

The main courthouse is the Downtown Location located at 1100 Van Ness Avenue Fresno, CA 93724, which can be reached by calling (559) 457-2000. This courthouse handles criminal matters, including felonies and misdemeanors, and cases of juvenile dependency. The "M" Street Courthouse, located at 2317 Tuolumne Street Fresno, CA 93721, handles criminal and traffic infractions and can be reached by calling (559) 457-1700. The Fresno County Superior Court Archives Facility is located at 1963 "E" Street Fresno, CA 93706, and can be reached by calling (559) 457-4903.

The B. F. Sisk Courthouse handles ADR, family court services, limited and unlimited civil trials, small claims, probate, conservatorship, guardianship, restraining orders, and unlawful detention. It is located at 1130 “O” Street Fresno, CA 93721, and can be reached by calling (559) 457-2000. The Jail Annex is located at 1265 M Street Fresno, CA 93721, and can be reached by calling (559) 457-6358 or (559) 457-6359. This location hears criminal and domestic violence cases.

The Juvenile Justice Court for the Fresno County Superior Court is located at 3333 East American Avenue, Suite A Fresno, CA 93725, and can be reached by calling (559) 457-4810. The Juvenile Justice Court hears matters relating to juvenile felonies, juvenile misdemeanors, and the Juvenile Drug Court.

The Assistant Presiding Judge is the Hon. Houry Sanderson. The Assistant Presiding Judge also serves as the Felony Supervising Judge and the Judge for General Trials. Fresno County Superior Court Divisions

Civil Division

The Civil Division of the Fresno County Superior Court handles: the recovery of money or property; contracts; damages for injury; the protection of civil rights; civil harassment; child care; unlawful detainer; minor’s compromise; civil cases relating to less than $25,000, excluding small claims cases; and other unlimited civil cases, excluding family law or probate cases.

The Civil Supervising Judge for Unlimited Civil Trials is the Hon. Jeff Hamilton. The Office of the Civil Supervising Judge is located in Dept. 503 of the B. F. Sisk Courthouse and can be reached by calling (559) 457-6320.

Family Law Division

The Family Law Division hears cases relating to divorce, legal separation, nullity, establishing parentage, child custody and visitation, child support, spousal support, family support, marital property division, domestic violence restraining orders, and elder abuse.

Jury Service Division

The Jury Service Division is responsible for providing the Courts with qualified jurors from the community.

Criminal Division

The Fresno County Superior Court Criminal Division is made up of the Felony & Misdemeanor Court, which deals with matters involving felonies, misdemeanors, and infractions. The Felony & Misdemeanor Court is located in Room No. 401 of the Downtown Location in Fresno. You can reach the Felony & Misdemeanor Court by calling (559) 457-1801 or faxing (559) 457-1820.

Juvenile Division

The Juvenile Division manages the Juvenile Justice Court, which handles cases related to juvenile status offenses concerning: noncriminal behaviors that are illegal because of the child's age; juvenile delinquencies; and juvenile dependency, including child abuse and neglect.

Probate Division

The Probate Division includes the Probate Court, which handles matters related to probate, trusts, guardianship, conservatorship, and mental health.

Small Claims Division

This division includes the Small Claims Court, which hears cases where the claim does not exceed $5,000, for a company, or $7,500, for a natural person.

Appeals Division

The Appeals Division of the Fresno County Superior Court hears appeals arising from limited civil cases, misdemeanors, or infractions as they are, trial de novo. Most appeals are limited to a review of the record from the lower court. Parties cannot introduce new evidence, but are limited to what was said and introduced at the original trial.

Traffic Division

Facts and Statistics

  1. The original courthouse for the Fresno County Superior Court was a single-story building that was built in 1867.
  2. The Fresno County Superior Court has 43 judges, six commissioners, and approximately 430 employees.
  3. In June 1998, the California electorate approved constitutional amendments permitting superior and municipal courts to fully unify. The judges in Fresno County agreed to unify all courts into the Superior Court of Fresno County effective July 1, 1998, abolishing the municipal courts.
