email from gmail - accessing from another country

Not sure if this is the correct forum.

I use gmail as my main email contact and I live in Australia. Two years ago I had trouble accessing gmail when logging in overseas, as it recognised that the log-in was not from my usual country. At the time it was solved by gmail sending some sort of access to my other email address which I could use abroad.

Apparently now gmail send an access code to a mobile phone number. I will not be using my phone while overseas so this will be useless.

Any tips?

Would downloading the gmail app be possible? I'm not certain if you can view your gmail from an app while in another location. I can't remember if I used it on my mobile phone last year whe n I was abroad. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable could help out. Either that or see if there is a way to contact gmail.

Thanks. I wonder if the app would work on the iphone if I was somewhere with public internet access (eg MacDonalds) , but not using a simcard? My problem is that I will be in Singapore for a few days, then Italy then Spain. I will not be using my phone at all during that time as I will be on tour and only intending to contact through hotel or other computers.

Hello,

I use my gmail app all the time and had no issues using it last year on my trip to Singapore and Thailand. I used wifi only and took my sim card out! Hope this helps

My DH was unable to access from abroad when on the computer, so you'll also have difficulties too. Then your only option is to download the app and access it from your phone where you would have wifi access.

Were you using your own computer or a shared/borrowed computer at your destination? It sounds like you have two factor authentication turned on in gmail. This will require you enter an authentication token sent to your phone or another account the first time you access it from a new device. It can be turned off, but it is a very useful security feature as it greatly reduces the risk of your account being hacked.

To adjust your settings:

1. Log into gmail.

2. Go to settings (gear icon in upper right corner)

3. Accounts & Import tab

4. Other Google account settings (new window probably opens)

5. Signing Into Google

6. Two step verification

Turn it off or adjust your settings from there.

This is helpful. I have the same problem with my yahoo mail; it won't give me access overseas from my cellphone OR my laptop on WiFi (even without changing my phone's SIM). I was considering forwarding everything to my gmail account (which I never use), but it looks like I might have the same problem with gmail, but I will check the settings.

If anyone has tips for Yahoo I'd appreciate it (or should I start a new topic for that?)

Another option, if you are being blocked by location, is to set up VPN access to a US based server. You may even be able to set it up to VPN into your home network - if you have a router that supports it. That can be somewhat tricky though. There are both free and very cheap versions available. I think there was a thread about it here sometime back, but truthfully the 100s of computer forums will have the most information and best technical experts.

sorry for my ignorance, but why does it matter that it's a US based server?

I missed that the OP is Australian. Change US to "home country" for the VPN to fit everyone.

10. Re: email from gmail - accessing from another country

Has anyone had any problems accessing gmail using gmail app on mobile while abroad? (using wifi only?). Its gonna be a pain if they block me coz i'll be bunny hopping between different countries within a short period of time.

"two factor authentication"

So as long as that is switched off, then all i need to do is use the usual email password without hindrance?

or would they still block access?
