Yale and MIT make it possible for you to audit their courses online with no credit or certificate offered. However, not all course materials may be available for every course.
Alison generates its own course materials and offers diplomas for the completion of certain courses. While there is no diploma offered in finance, they do have 34 courses offered in what they call, 'Financial & Economic Literacy'. While diplomas are offered and may be accepted by employers, they do not offer college credit.

Both of these providers act as channels for courses offered by multiple universities and institutions. A search for finance on Coursera yielded 77 courses, and the same search on edX resulted in 60 courses. Not all courses on these sites charge a fee, and for the ones that do, the costs are much lower than enrolling in a university. That, however, is not to say that these are always low-cost options. From all appearances, they always charge a fee if you want a certificate to prove you took the course. Another limiting factor on these sites is that not all courses are available all the time.

Study.com operates with many of the best features of these other options. The course material is available all the time. The site operates on a monthly subscription basis instead of charging for a particular course, so once in, you can study as much as you want to whenever and wherever you are.
