Court Records

The Franklin County Clerk of Courts is responsible for processing circuit court case records, among other duties. Court records are documents generated during legal proceedings, such as criminal case files, bankruptcy records, and records from family or probate court.

They contain information about these legal proceedings, including names of the parties involved, dates of hearings, testimony and evidence, and rulings in cases. Court records are kept in office for a period of time and then disposed of or archived. Most are considered public records, though some information may be redacted when copies are provided to the public. In some cases, court records may be sealed and require a court order to access, but many others can be accessed easily online. Maryellen O’Shaughnessy is the current Clerk of Courts.

The Franklin County Clerk of Courts’ Case Information Online (CIO) portal provides public record information regarding Criminal and Civil cases filed in the General Division of the Court of Common Pleas, Domestic Relations cases filed in the Domestic Relations Division of the Court of Common Pleas, and Appellate cases filed in the 10th District Court of Appeals. CIO was designed for use by the general public.It can be searched by the name of the plaintiff or defendant and/or the name of the court. It may also be searched by the case number, if known.

Requests for copies of court records may also be made directly to the Clerk of Courts office. In addition to the name and contact information of the requester, requests should identify the court records sought using some or all of the following information: the full name of the plaintiff, defendant, or attorney involved in the case; the case number; a date range for when the record was filed; and/or document type. It may also be beneficial to specify the need the request is meant to fill and to indicate if the copies of court records should be certified. Certified records are stamped by the custodian of records to indicate they are true copies of the originals.
