In a recently published spanish book about David Lynch the author says Frank Silva died in 1995 beause of AIDS. Until now I thought the reason was a heart attack but now I don´t know what to think. What was the true cause?

There's not a lot definitively known about this, as far as I have ever heard.  Just after his death, the heart attack idea was what everyone seemed to be saying.  Later on (I have no idea when) the AIDS explanation came up.  Then still later people said he had a heart attack brought about by an AIDS complication.  It sounds like someone out there is trying to protect his privacy, which I can't say I disagree with.

If you're inclined to troll around IMDB, you'll find that they list his cause of death as AIDS.  One of the contributors to his discussion board claims (I don't vouch for the veracity of this) that s/he has heard from both Lynch and Michael Anderson that Silva died of AIDS, which he had contracted far before any eps of Twin Peaks were ever shot.  Given the HIV/AIDS climate of the early 90s/late 80s, it seems understandable that if he did have HIV/AIDS, he and/or his family and friends might wish to hush it up.

As to how he might have contracted HIV/AIDS... I hope we don't have to go there because I think that's a sort of indecently personal question!  :)

It´s the latest volume of Cátedra editions (nº 71 of its collection "Signo e Imagen"). It has been published this month I think. It´s about 12 or 13€ and has 449 pages! It´s very complete (there´s a chapter about Inland Empire) and covers all kind of works (not only films: paintings, ads, internet...) Undoubtedly, a very worthy book.

Oh, by the way the title of the book is "David Lynch" and its author is Quim Casas. you know, a spanish film critic very well known because of his devotion to Lynch work!

Mmm... Yes, that sounds quite logical. Thanks for your answer! We´ll keep Frank´s privacy there where it has to be kept... R.I.P.

The good AIDS, bad AIDS comment is out of order and if that's all you have to contribute to the board Skybaby, I fear you've delighted us long enough.

You can't really "die of AIDS"; the disease weakens your immune system and allows other things to kill you.  So Frank Silva could easily have been an AIDS sufferer who happened to die of a heart attack.

I think Skybaby was referring to the satirical 90s UK show 'Brass Eye' by Chris Morris, which was actually satirising the 'good AIDS/bad AIDS' attitude prevalent in the media at the time (and still, to an extent, now). Unfortunately the context appears to have been missed. I don't think there was any offence meant.

"Good AIDS, bad AIDS" is a Chris Morris reference - I don't think Sky was trying to be disrespectful. Silva passed away a long time ago guys, this isn't news to most of us....

Has he taken his eyes off it yet?

When I heard that Frank died of AIDS must first reaction was - No wonder he was so thin - Must have been shooting speed with a dirty needle. I first heard heart attack but at his age it's unlikely - He probibly got  AIDS from an infected needle. Most people his age are not that thin.

Chris Morris - now that's offensive! Haha. Didn't he do some sort of paedophile spoof that ended his career? I didn't like Brass Eye but I vaguely remember the tabloids working themselves into a frenzy over it. I've got quite a dark sense of humour but there isn't enough irony or satire in the world to make AIDS seem, you know, funny... What happened to Doctor Doctor and Knock Knock jokes... sigh.

I´m sorry, I am usually not rude towards people here, but that´s just redicules!!

It reminds me of when I worked in a school in Bangkok. One of the teachers there was gay and really really thin (a lot of thai people are) Then a friend (Danish) of mine said "yeah, he´s so thin, he´s gay, I´m sure he has AIDS". WTF??? I really can´t stand when people make such conclusions about people they hardly know. Especially when it´s only based on apperances (and in my case nationality).

Correct on both counts.

Morris' sketch wasn't mocking AIDS, it was criticising attitudes towards it.

Anyone offended by it should probably never use The Internet.

If there's a knock knock joke that's funnier than a pedophile disguised as a school, I haven't heard it.

Oy, THIS is back?  Yes, Frank was gay & perished as a result of having AIDS. He was also a very nice guy, who I met & hung out with the one Fest he attended ('94).  The next year he was residing in an AIDS hospice on Seattle's Capitol Hill & Pat Shook & Mike Anderson visited him there  prior to movie night.   AIDS is a worldwide epidemic & people are STILL afraid to acknowledge it...  RIP Frank.

RIP, frank silva. i felt bad when i'd learned a number of years ago that he'd died. AIDS is a terrible scourge and no one 'deserves' to contract it.
