Francesca Hayward is an English ballerina and a principal dancer in the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden in London.
Francesca was born in Nairobi, Kenya to an English father and Kenyan mother. At age 2, she moved to Worthing in West Sussex to live with her grandparents, where she gained her passion for ballet. When she was young she danced at Le Serve School of Ballet and Theatre Dance in Worthing until her teacher encouraged her to audition to White Lodge, the junior section of the Royal Ballet School. After being a Junior Associate from the age of nine, she entered the School at the age of 11 in 2003 and progressed to the Royal Ballet Upper School in 2008.
In 2009, while still studying at the Royal Ballet School in London, Hayward won the Lynn Seymour Award for Expressive Dance. Around that time, Hayward also won the 2010 Young British Dancer of the Year and the silver medal and the Audience Choice Award at the 2010 Genée International Ballet Competition.
According to Hayward’s official profile at the Royal Opera House website, Hayward never graduated from the Royal Ballet School but did join the company for their 2010/11 season due to her talent. Hayward never graduated due to injuries. Hayward became a First Artist in 2013 and First Solist in 2015. In 2016, Hayward was promoted to Principal.
In 2014, Hayward won Best Emerging Artist at the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards while in 2016 Hayward won the Grishko Award for Best Female Dancer.
She has performed in numerous productions, taking on the roles of Clara and The Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, and Princess Aurora and Princess Florine in Sleeping Beauty.
