About Fourplay

Fourplay is an all-star outfit founded by Bob James on keyboards, Lee Ritenour on guitar, Nathan East on bass, and Harvey Mason on drums. They would team up in 1991 after coming together for James' album Grand Piano Canyon. They would put out a number of top selling albums with Warner Bros. In the late 'nineties, Larry Carlton would take over on guitar, making his Fourplay debut on the 1998 release 4. In 1999, the holiday album Snowbound would come out. Their last album with Warner Bros. would be Fourplay… Yes, Please! in 2000.

2002's Heartfelt, released on Bluebird of RCA, would be an attempt at expanding their style with live but heavily edited studio jams. 2004's Journey would be a return to their successful, relaxed style. Their last album for Bluebird would be 2006's X.

Fourplay would move to Heads Up International for their 2008 release Energy. Chuck Loeb would take over for Carlton on guitar for 2010's reunion release, Let's Touch the Sky. In 2012, Fourplay would release Esprit de Four.

Previous Hits

Since releasing their debut self-titled album in 1991, Fourplay has been pumping out hit after hit that make their mark on the Billboard charts. Fourplay have so far released no less than seven albums that would top the Top Contemporary Jazz chart. Their eponymous first release in 1991 would bring together jazz, pop, and R&B in an irresistibly radio-friendly fashion with two especially lighthearted tracks: 101 Eastbound and Wish You Were Here.

1993's Between the Sheets would be another number one hit featuring easy-listening tracks with some strong vocals from Nathan East. Some of the album's best tracks are the title track and Chant.

In 1995, Elixir would be Fourplay's third chart-topping album. It would be another relaxing, low-key output with a number of exciting guest vocalists, including Peabo Bryson, Patti Austin, and Phil Collins. Top tracks from Elixir are the opening title track and The Closer I Get To You.

1998 would see another number one contemporary jazz album from Fourplay aptly entitled 4. 4 would be another dependably polished, smooth, and emotive release that would keep an even keel despite the lineup shakeup that exchanged Lee Ritenour for Larry Carlton. The album picks up steam as it goes along, culminating in some of Fourplay's most exciting tracks: Vest Pocket and Swamp Jazz.

Fourplay would ring in the new millennium with yet another number one hit album, Fourplay… Yes, Please! This album would be as groovy, non-threatening, and smooth as any Fourplay release, but stands out for being a bit more seductive and soft than their previous output. Guest vocalist Sheree adds some serious sex appeal on A Little Fourplay, Bob James' keyboarding skills up the romance on Go with Your Heart, Carlton is smoking hot on Blues Force, and Robo Bop pulses with East's indefatigable bass.

2006's X would be slightly funky, but as subtle and low key as any longtime Fourplay fan could desire. Particularly appealing tunes are the gentle, R&B-inflected Sunday Morning, the urbane and bluesy Screenplay, and My Love's Leavin' with guest vocalist Michael McDonald.

Fourplay's most recent chart buster would be 2008's Energy. Consistent with their high quality, expertly executed discography so far, this mildly poppy album contains seven instrumental and three vocal tracks. The winning cut is Prelude for Lovers with guest vocals from Esperanza Spalding, which balances Caribbean rhythms with neo-soul. Other highlights from Energy include Comfort Zone, Ultralight, and Fortune Teller.

Trivia

Considering they have been together since 1991 with only two lineup changes, Fourplay is an impressive testament to, and embodiment of, the relaxing, laid back approach that these four maestros take to their music.
