In 1558 Mary, Queen of Scots, aged 15, married Francis, Dauphin of France, aged 14. In 1560 the dauphin died as a result of an ear infection, and Mary returned to Scotland; in 1800 President John Adams approved the spending of $5,000 to establish a Library of Congress. A collection of 740 volumes and three maps were ordered from London; in 1970 China launched its first satellite, which orbited the Earth transmitting the communist patriotic tune Dong Fang Hong (The East is Red) and also announced the time; in 1980 a military operation (Operation Eagle Claw) to rescue 52 US embassy staff held hostage held in Tehran, Iran, ended with eight US servicemen dead and no hostages rescued.

As global warming brings record heats, monsoon rains and frequent storms, good news is in short supply. Fortunately, No Mow May is nearly upon us. This is the time when conscientious gardeners commit to leaving grass cutters in the shed for a month. At this single stroke, the unbothered garden becomes a meadow. We’ve lost about 97 per cent of our wildflower rich meadows since the 1930s, but it’s heartening to realise that many of them have been hiding in plain sight all this time — on our very doorsteps. Ladies smock, bush vetch, speedwell, buttercups, dandelions, orchids are just some of the species sleeping in your grass. And once the snarl of lawn mowers is silenced, the music of pollinators and birds will return.
